Proper Introductions

Submitted by cnet.aaron on Thu, 2008-12-18 13:21.

I realize that I've been posting information here for a while now, but haven't provided any relevant background demonstrating real knowledge about the things that are important to VersionTracker users. Therefore, I'd like to give you a brief introduction to who I am and what I'm doing here.

The product manager position focuses on VersionTracker.com and MacFixIt.com, with a strong emphasis on the Mac community. I've been using VersionTracker and MacFixIt practically since they launched, so I know exactly what it means to be one of our customers. I set a high bar for our services, and I want to provide customers with a truly valuable resource that is second to none.

I've grown up on the Mac. My dad ran his freelance design business on a Mac II in the late 80's and I've been using the platform ever since. My first Mac was a Powerbook 145b (with a trackball!). One of my first jobs was supporting a small business that ran on Macs and Filemaker databases and I have used and supported Macs in various business environments throughout my career. In short, I have worked on and around the Mac throughout my entire career, in addition to using them for all of my own computing needs.

You may have noticed some changes recently, and there have certainly been some bumps along the way. We're working on addressing the remaining issues as well as moving towards major site improvements we have planned for next year. I can't provide any detailed information now, but we've got big plans for the site, and regaining its position in the Mac community is at the top of the list.

I hope you find this information helpful and informative. I look forward to working with you and hearing your feedback as we continue to move the site forward.

Sincerely,
Aaron Smith
VersionTracker Product Manager

Hi Aaron,

Appreciate the intro about yourself.
Is the founding crew of VT still on board, Kurt and his gang?

Cheers

My impression is: your pasword verification is lousey.
My guess , as long as vtmfpro, has my money ( i've been a user fro 8 years ) , new ownership- you just do not give a shit,

if your password verification works.
I have sent you requests to verify my password, and then the password verification reply does not work.

.PLEASE.

REFUND MY MEMBERSHIP FEE. 12/23/08

And why CAN'T you tell us about what is planned? Giant competitors lurking to steal your secrets? I doubt it. Many of us are at ZERO confidence level here -- I'm about to issue a chargeback on my credit card since "support" hasn't answered me -- and all I hear is "it will be fixed soon". Well, so far it isn't fixed, after months of promises, and announced plans are nebulous, at best, and support is pure fiction.

While I appreciate the intro, my confidence level: still zero. And I was a charter subscriber.

BiG,

I'm sorry about the issues. I will follow up with support to find out about what's going on.

Example of ZERO confidence level:

on dec 19th you list Xcode 3.1.2 as new software...

the release date was NOV 24th

You'd better not tell us what you are planning... I know why!

rawhide,

We're still working on issues that are affecting some products as you've described, but hope to have them fixed soon.

So, it's early morning and there are NO MacFixit forums being listed? I don't see anything on that site, or in the blogs here, that would indicate a reason for this. Is this another case of "maintainance" being done to improve service?

Since my recent VT Support issues have gone unanswered (and unfixed) is there any reason for me to submit a new Support case for something as fundamental as there being no forums? Certainly someone on the VT/CNET/CBS staff is checking these things, right?

As a paying customer I'm not amused. (Foolishly?) I keep hoping that something, anything out of the long list of issues will get fixed so that even more resources can be assigned to fix the remaining problems on the list.

/Marty

Hi Marty,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the forums. There's no maintenance going on today that would cause a service outage. I have logged in and checked the forums and everything seems to be fine. If you continue to experience problems accessing the forums, please submit a support ticket as you normally would for these types of issues.

Thanks,
Aaron

still not working as they should. VTP does not even see all of the software on my computer, and support isn't functioning.

I did change it and was able to log in to the website, but still, the program will not recognize the password. I cant even contact support as it says that my email address is already on your database??.tower defense. If this problem cannot be fixed, please do not renew my subscription when it is due, as I only used it once and didn't need to update the new versions anyway.

Any possibility that the ratings will be fixed on the website any time soon? VersionTracker USED to be a great resource for finding apps that did particular things and to see what was the experience of other users. Now all I get is a whole column of "unrated".

My account is already paid up so it's too late to cancel... maybe it's because CNET already has my money so why bother with service at all?

Altho I am using OSX 10.5.6 my "computer list" is still using an older update, 10.5.4... How do I update the list?

vanderleun1 Says:

It has been months.... MONTHS... long MONTHS... since the most trivial of items has been fixed on this site.

You have blown it. If you've been "hired" to rectify the disaster that this site h as been for a long, long time, I suggest you start looking for your next job now, because it is only a question of time before this site is irrevocably nonviable as a commercial operation.

Why this is so, I don't know and I don't care. CNET bought it. Broke it. And has not fixed it. It's gone and I hope... I HOPE... that CNET is not far behind.

If you are not networking for your next paycheck, you are crazy.

Just as a small thing, try category sort. No results found for any category.

Not just dead, but brain dead. Pull the plug. Useless site.

Hi, I was able to use Version tracker once, but have been unable to use it again since I purchased it. It says that my password is invalid, so I went to the site that was emailed to me to change it. I did change it and was able to log in to the website, but still, the program will not recognize the password. I cant even contact support as it says that my email address is already on your database??.. Hope you can fix it or cancel my account please.

Does not work for months now. I can't get any email, versiontracker pro shows updates from months ago. For instance i use version 5.4 of a certain program. Versiontracker says i use 5.3(?) and shows te update 5.4 but i am sure there is already an update 5.5. I asked the helpdesk to fix the emailissues for me, they did not, they didn't even gave me an answer. My account expires in april. It 's a swindling

Mike Fleischner Says:

Not only the above problems, but you can't even renew your subscription before the end of an existing subscription. It even says so in the FAQ:

"If you are a returning subscriber, we sincerely apologize that we will no longer be able to allow you to renew your services early. We are in the middle of migrating to a new payment platform, and though we cannot currently offer this mid-transition, we are working hard to give you the ability to view and edit your billing information so that you may prevent interruptions in your service."

BiG77 Says:

"you can't even renew your subscription before the end of an existing subscription"

Why would anyone renew, let alone early?

John26 Says:

With so many problems going unfixed for months, why hasn't someone at CNET thought of rolling things back to the original version that worked while you sort out the problems offline? For months and months there's been no ratings available, among other problems.

I'm paid through August '09 for VersionTracker/MacFixIt. But I won't renew when the time comes. After many happy years, I've lost all confidence in VersionTracker and CNET.

I have tried to use this program and it refudes to recognize me. Is it because of .mac or what, keeps saying that my password needs to be reset I do and it still gives me the same message. I am syd1@mac.com, I have been a member for a number of yearsand have never had this kind of problem.

I had been a paid subscriber on VT for about 6 years, and I too was fed up with all the ongoing issues that were never being fixed, and the 'sincere apologies' that were less than sincere. Sure, VT WAS a great service once upon a time, but no more.

I wrote them an email about 6 weeks ago, stating all the problems I was having, and demanded (not asked) for my money back. And surprisingly, they DID! Of course it was prorated, but at least they refunded something.

I signed up with the free trial at macupdate.com, liked it, and am now a paid member. Macupdate is a little lean in features compared with the 'old' VT, but at least it WORKS as advertised. I had one issue with them to begin with, when I paid the subscriber fee, it wasn't added to my free account. So I emailed them, and within a few hours the problem was fixed, and they added 3 months to my subscription for the inconvenience.

So guys, if you're not happy, DO something about it.... otherwise they'll never get the message.

I stumbled upon the above complaints because the service had been so bad that I hardly ever used it. Upon checking out what I have been receiving, I find that I received the VT Mac OS X Weekly Mailing from January 3 to Jan 31, 2009, at which point it seems to have stopped. Working backwards through earlier dates, I found a mixed bag of alerts from August 25, 2008 to July 27, 2007, with large gaps. I have been a subscriber for many years and have noticed the decline over a long period of time. I would like to terminate my subscription and get some of my money back.
