Mac Notepad 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Nice software with a clean and sensible interface and a very good search engine, but the lengthy load-time raised my suspicions, so I checked the app out in Activity Monitor and found that on my MacBook Pro the software consumes about 13% of the CPU, even when it's idling. Will try again later... [alert admin]

iTunes Statistician 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Throwing ratings into the mix would be nice. In any event, it's definitely worth checking out. [alert admin]

Butler 4.0 (Mac OS X)
Everything positive anybody has ever written here about Butler is true. The only frustrating thing about Butler is that it is not installed on every Macintosh in existence -- it's almost impossible for me to sit down at another Mac and avoid pressing Ctrl-Space! Now let's go Intel native, and another donation will be forthcoming. [alert admin]

There aren't many reasons to pay for a newsreader when Vienna is available -- clean interface, solid performance, and still evolving. [alert admin]

Butler 4.0b27 (Mac OS X)
An amazing bit of software, especially for those who prefer the keyboard to the mouse. Between keyboard app launching and the universal bookmark manager, I can't imagine computing with it. [alert admin]

iTunes-LAME Encoder 2.0.8 (Mac OS X)
Does what it's supposed to, with ease. Works fine with the latest software -- OS 10.4.2 and iTunes 6.0.1. [alert admin]

iTunes Connection Monitor 1.6 (Mac OS X)
This may well be the worst software listed at versiontracker. Why? Since its inception, this widget has never worked. Not once, not ever. I haven't tried for a few versions, but figured that by now, surely it would be working as advertised! Umm... No. I quit out of iTunes, and was informed that somebody was connected. Wouldn't know from this software, which reported that nobody was connected. In the past, this software also brutalized the cpu. I didn't bother to see if that's still true or not, given that it was destined for the trash can anyway. Probably it's still true; I suspect the only revision that actually gets made to this thing is to update the file modification date and add a number to the version. Cheers to the author, who has yet again provided me with a good chortle. [alert admin]

The price is a joke, right? Try this $15 solution, which I've been using successfully for several years. [alert admin]

This software is excellent, to be sure, but of late I've been using Vienna, which doesn't cost a dime and has every NNW feature I made use of. There are some cool things that to my knowledge only NNW does, like displaying dead feeds and allowing for the creation of search result subscriptions, and if you need these things then you can't go wrong with this software. Otherwise, you may want to check the free alternatives. [alert admin]

It's some kid in a basement, hardly a developer. I suspect the only reason his copy of this crap works is because he's on lithium and sharing his library with three stuffed panda bears and a Barbie doll with no left arm.

You figure because we have a dual machine we "have a few extra bucks", so why not just tack on an additional charge? I'm surprised you'd admit such a strategy in public. The thing is overpriced to begin with, for a single cpu system. Looks interesting, but not fifty-bucks-interesting.
