Firefox 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Many troubles ...going back to 2

I was forced to return to version 2 of Firefox. The primary issue was a double menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.). Not two rows, but rather two of everything on the same row. What a mess. I'm not running any system hacks that mess with the menu bar, either. Also, many login problems for me. I could not even log in here to VersionTracker to leave this comment with version 3; I had to return to version 2. Lastly, nearly all my add-ons are useless, and this is the deal killer for me, as I need several of them. Maybe I'll try again in a few months... [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Smooth update

I'm surprised that Microsoft Update didn't catch the availability of this update, but running VersionTracker Pro did catch it. Anyway, there have been no problems whatsoever on the OS X 10.4.11 PPC machines I tend after installing this update. The update went quickly, with no slow restarts or anything of that nature. I've found nothing missing, and everything opens as it should. Various types of documents have been opened with no problems at all. I've seen no weird permissions problems or anything of that nature. Various utility programs, run after the update, find no problems. Seems like a good update to me. Now, about that Microsoft Update thing... got to fix that, MS. [alert admin]

AirPort Flow 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Works fine

Simple little app that does what it says it does. Working fine with AirPort Extreme (Fast Ethernet) and OS X 10.4.11. It would probably help to have the author write just a bit more information for users (minus 1 star for that...). Hey, it's free - what do you want? My thanks to the developer. [alert admin]

Little Snitch 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Use safe boot

No problems here on PPC 10.4.11. I used safe boot as suggested. No panics, no nothing ...just works. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.1.3.10 (Mac OS X)

"Nothing to Install" message? - Run uninstaller first

I also had the "Nothing to Install" message. So, I ran the uninstaller program (located in the Flip4Mac folder, which should be in your Applications folder). Next, I ran the update. No problems at all, and everything installed correctly. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 7.4.2 (Mac OS X)

I want iTunes Light (no iPhone)

Okay, enough of this kill-the-ringtones-update stuff. I suggest that Apple release an iPhone-free version of iTunes ...call it iTunes Light or whatever. That version should have no iPhone capability whatsoever. Then Apple can do battle with the ringtone busters/hackers/whatever-they-are all they want without annoying the vast majority of us that, for whatever reason, do not or will not have an iPhone. Then Apple could release updates on the hour for all I care. I am getting real tired of these massive updates that seem to occur nearly every few days now. [alert admin]

DragThing 5.8 (Mac OS X)

Commendable behavior

I would like to thank both Sig Software and TLA Systems for making DragThing available as an upgrade path, and also for making the transition so smooth. So often, when a developer moves on from a past project, the old application (and it's users) are simply left hanging. Sig Software was conscientious enough to not do this, and TLA Systems was smart enough to see their benefit in helping pave the way for the easy transition. Clearly, a lot of work was done to cause the move from DropDrawers to DragThing to be an easy one, and I appreciate it. While DragThing is not DropDrawers, I can already see that it is close enough now to make it an excellent replacement. Remember, DropDrawers is not DragThing either, and has many new features aside from the new DropDrawers functionality. Also, it is nice to have a commitment to future development. I noticed that the DragThing forums are quite active and that suggestions for the program are welcomed. I've seen a few features from DropDrawers that are missing from DragThing, and I'll make my suggestions about those there in the forum. [alert admin]

WeatherManX 1.9.7 (Mac OS X)

Good as usual

I'm always surprised when I read that anyone has had trouble with this application. I've run it for years with hardly a hitch. Occasionally, the Weather Service makes changes and this always messes up my weather programs (I run more than one), but normally all of them will have a similar problem. The developer has always had rapid responces to my email questions; certainly within a reasonable timeframe. This newest version is working fine even though I have quite a few locations it must load. If I had to buy the license again, I wouldn't hesitate. When I need accurate weather information quickly, this is where I go. This program is used constantly by me and I depend on it. [alert admin]

Lighthouse 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Saves headaches

I've been using Lighthouse for several months now, and have come to depend on it. Originally, we had a funky Belkin PnP wireless router and setting up port forwarding was a real pain. There are a few Mac applications that can set the PnP forwarding automatically, but most had trouble with the Belkin. Even after getting Lighthouse installed there were problems, but due to the persistence of the developer in releasing good software, the problems were worked out and we finally had trouble free port forwarding. Recently, we ditched the old Belkin in favor of a new Apple Extreme Base Station. This Apple router is not the easiest to set up for port forwarding. Also, it does not use PnP, rather using something called PMP-NAT, which means that the few Mac applications that I use that did PnP were in the cold. Luckily for us, Lighthouse handles the duties flawlessly. If you have an Apple Extreme Base Station, this software will make life easier. I also like how easy it is to write my own port forwarding profiles. In fact, others can write new profiles, submit them to the developer, and share them with everyone. You can easily modify any existing profile to your own needs or whims. There seems to be little or no hit on machine performance with Lighthouse. Another plus is that it is reasonably priced. The support from the developer is as good as I've seen. [alert admin]

Will not let me login to MYy Yahoo!

I had the same problem, and "downgraded" back to version 2. I found many login issues with version 3; so many that I had no choice but to downgrade. Further, most of my addons are not version 3 compatible. The largest disappointment was finding that Google Browser Sync is not version 3 compatible, and in fact will never be.

Our incorrect assumptions...

Personally, I have never had any other than the best of support from the Script Software people. Usually, no support is needed. This new version has a few rough edges, but it will get sorted out. They seem to be working hard at providing a high quality product.

Where can I find the old version?

Script Software has provided the old versions here: http://www.scriptsoftware.com/copypaste/old/ I'm going to have to back up to the old version myself until they get some of the more severe problems sorted out. I need this to "just work."

Has Neither Matched Nor Surpassed Global Village Software

PageSender is as good as faxing gets on OS X, but sometimes I think of dragging one of my old Macs out of mothballs and using it exclusively for faxing with the Global Village Fax Software. In fact, if I faxed more than I do, I probably would do this. You could probably find an old scanner to hook up to a serial or SCSI connection fairly easily, hook it to an old…

Version Tracker Pro getting worse and worse

Right now, I'll be happy if the VersionTracker and MacFixIt sites would simply recognize that I renewed nearly a month ago! And, yes, the VT app is missing loads of my apps also. Happily, it's much faster - but what is it worth if I have to do it all manually? I have more than one machine to attend. VT has been pretty decent in the past (I have been a…

I'll take it...

Hey, at least they're working on it. Microsoft has their own issues right now (ahem ...V-i-s-t-a non-acceptance and their rabid fear of open-source), so maybe we're lucky to get this at all.
