MemoryStick 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Indispensable Utility for PPC

We've been using this on several Macs for years now. It's so valuable that it's set to automatically start on login for all our users. If your machine starts to get into trouble with an application hogging too much memory, you will see it immediately. The window can be formed to take up a tiny sliver of space, yet still give a complete graphical view of memory usage. It is particularly good for less technical users, yet shows details useful to sophisticated users as well. There seems to be no hit on system resources whatsoever. We've never had the first problem with this little application and the price is right - free. It's indispensable for us. Do remember, this is PPC only. [alert admin]

Foxmarks 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Beware! FoxMarks = Xmarks = Deceiptive business practices

Before you install this, realize that "FoxMarks" has become "Xmarks." Go to the Mozilla Add-ons page for it and read what is happening. Your bookmarks are going to become "aggregated" - that is sales-talk for "Data Mining." What once was a tremendous boon to multiple-computer users, has just become a security nightmare. READ WHAT IS HAPPENING BEFORE YOU INSTALL THIS. You WILL be getting advertising on your web searches in the form of "suggestions." The FoxMarks/Xmarks company is a business, backed by Venture Capitol, that intends to make money with the information received by storing YOUR bookmarks. If you want to help them do that, fine. Just be aware of what is occurring. Rather than giving you the choice to opt-out to the Xmarks marketing schemes, you are instead automatically forced to participate, as the DEFAULT is "opt-in." Further, the name change from FoxMarks to Xmarks has caused failure due to many firewalls, both of Internet Service Providers and businesses, blocking the Xmarks site (as the domain was a former porn domain). The Mac version here is still the original "FoxMarks" branded version, but if you go to your account you will find that they are now using your bookmarks, Xmarks-style, unless you specifically opt-out. Again, the DEFAULT is "opt-in." Had the developers ASKED for permission to data-mine our stored bookmarks and load our searches with "suggestions," this situation might not have come to the uproar that it has come to. Unfortunately, FoxMarks/Xmarks has make a colossal marketing blunder. I no longer trust them, and neither do many others. Inform yourself before making the decision as to whether you trust them. Personally, I consider their business practices to be deceptive at best. They seem to be bringing the worst of the Windows world to the Mac. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

CNET ownership = Massive price increase

To anyone who has been a long time user of VersionTracker, the CNET takeover of VT can only be seen as a disaster. Since the arrival of CNET we have seen months-long failures of service, zero communications with paying customers, billing fiascoes, and an unresponsive web site. I could go on and on. Paying customers should have received a rebate for the loss of service since the ownership change, or at least an extension of the subscription, but NO, what we get is a price increase. Not a small one either. Previous to the CNET ownership, my VT/MFI Pro subscription covered ten machines. Now, the same money covers only THREE machines! In other words, to cover the same amount of hardware, my price as a subscriber has NEARLY TRIPLED! How can I justify paying for such an increase when the service was practically non-existent for months on end, with no adjustment to subscriptions of paying customers? Answer: I cannot, and will not. (BTW, I have been a "paying customer" since there have been "paying customers" at VT.) [alert admin]

LimeWire 5.1.1 (Mac OS X)

End of the line for PPC machines

This is a caution for PPC Mac users - Do not purchase LimeWire Pro. You can NOT run it on your PPC machine. Evidently all versions of LimeWire beyond the 4.18 series are going to be for Intel Macs only. There is still a link for the older Pro version at your Pro download site, but it's a little hard to find. Of course, you can download the non-Pro version at any time. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Took down machine

Did the Software update, downloaded and installed after safe boot. Repaired permissions and ran system scripts. Did several more restarts. Ran 3.2.1 for about an hour and it locked up. Force Quit would not shut it down. Had to force machine to shut down with power button. Not good. 10.5.5 system here. Guess its back to Firefox... [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 13.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Time for this to just go away

People. It's not 1987. You aren't using System 6. Your hard drive isn't 10 MB any longer. You aren't using a 300 baud modem. Just let this thing go. Developers, quit using this product for your available downloads. We don't need it. A .dmg image is fine. [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2008-006 (Mac OS X)

"Your network settings have been changed by another application"

VERY BAD UPDATE. DO NOT INSTALL. If you have not already installed "Security Update 2008-006," DO NOT INSTALL IT, especially if you are using a laptop and change "Locations" often! Thousands and thousands of OS X 10.4.11 users are finding it impossible to use the Network preference pane after applying this update. There is no fix from Apple at this time, and although there are some work-arounds. Mostly it breaks your system. VERY BAD UPDATE. DO NOT INSTALL. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

New limitation on number of computers?

After years and years of being a paying VersionTracker user, today I suddenly start getting an error message claiming that I have exceeded my number of licensed computers on which VT is installed. The amount of computers has always been limited to ten. I have eight, although some "computers" are actually just another operating system installed on the same machine. In any event, I just checked the sales blurb for VT Pro, and find that the number of allowed computers has now been slashed to only THREE!!!! In one move, VT has effectively raised the price of VT Pro by over 66%. Further, the sales blurb states "...three Macs." Does that mean I now have to purchase VT Pro separately for any Windows machines? Is this a retroactive change? When did this change occur? Why, after months and months since renewal, has VT just now started cutting the number of installed instances of VT? I don't believe I like this at all. [alert admin]

Honest feedback? Why not?

Have no idea how you searched VT, but I just found ImageWell by searching VT ...with no problem. Believe me, I am not here to defend VT; everyone knows they've had tremendous problems since the CNET buyout. However, your comment makes no sense considering they have your application rated with a five-star rating ...and a search for it works just fine.

Avoid.

I concur. David Watanabe is the worst developer of Mac software there ever was. His disrespect of customers is the stuff of legend. How MacUpdate and VersionTracker even allow him space is beyond me. The guy is 100% a crook. Totally avoid this scam artist.

LimeWire is a Great way to wreck your hard drive - NOT

I am also interested in how this software will wreck a hard drive. It would seem we have some Limewire competitors posting. I have used Limewire for many, many years and am yet to have a single problem with it on many different machines and operating systems. I pay for it, and will continue to do so.

Same here. Tried twice. Even the program, when run, reports that it is version 1.0. What's the deal?

Garbage

I certainly agree with one thing: Leopard is not a good OS compared to its predecessors. Those running Intel may not see this so clearly, but if you are running PPC machines, you will. This is not good since Snow Leopard will not be running on PPC machines. I'm afraid PPC machines will be left to "slowly twist in the wind" once Snow Leopard is released.

Cross words re passwords

Try opening Keychain Access (in your Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder). Run Keychain First Aid (from the Menu, it's in the drop-down menu below "Keychain Access"). Enter your password and set Keychain First Aid to "Repair." Run Keychain First Aid. See if that won't fix it. It usually does.

Because it's become a self perpetuating fraud

Long ago, Macs did not have file compression built in to the system. Those days are long gone. This software is a vestige of days past. Why do you think Aladdin dumped this to Smith Micro years ago? Smith Micro made a bad business decision to buy Stuffit, and now they're stuck with it. The only way they can make back their investment is to constantly hit you with PAID "upgrades"…

Why? Snobbery. Windows users can't do it.

I use it to tweak the noses of Windows users. "What! You don't have an AOL Radio player for Windows? I guess you are limiting yourself using a Windows machine... There's no software for those things." Hehe...
