Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)

embarrassing performance

On my brandnew MBP 2,6ghz with 4 gig of RAM, running 10.5.2, Word needs somewhere between 40 secs and 1min until I can start to actually use it. Word 2008 is an intel-native word-processor...hello?!...a word processor! This application launched pretty much instantly on my G4 800 back in the OS9.2 days for crying out loud! Yes, I know, Apple's Pages sucks in many ways (for me it's mainly the lack of a professional thesaurus and the ability to spellcheck in different languages, to name a few). Still, in many ways Pages is absolutely fine for most people. Also, It launches in less than a second. To put things into perspective, Photoshop CS3 (with a shiteload of plugs) takes about 3secs to load, Cinema 4D somewhere between 1-2 secs. Heck, I'm not even sure if I have an application that actually needs more than 4-5 seconds to launch...excluding the Office stuff of course. Oh, and on my good old 1,67 Powerbook, now running 10.5.2, Entourage needs about 15 seconds to switch between mail and calendar view!!! Needless to say that Office 2004 (I only use Word+Entourage) was flying on Tiger on that laptop. And yes, there is an enormous difference in load/launch-time depending on activated fonts etc. Still, all this is unacceptable. If Word would be shareware, I would be very unimpressed - or frustrated if I paid, say, 30 dollar. Unfortunately I've paid much more (6 updts + 2 full seats)...and we're seriously considering a refund + downgrade here. In short: if productivity or speed is a top priority, stay far away from Office 2008! At least for the time being. [alert admin]

WhatSize 10.3.9 (Mac OS X)

A must have!

this is a must have utility. However, now that the 4.x versions costs $13 bucks (from being free!) I don't really see why I should upgrade, really. I guess 4.99 would be a cool price. [alert admin]

Senuti 0.50.1b6 (Mac OS X)

iPod Touch / iPhone users...

If you can't wait for Senuti to support the iPod Touch/iPhone, try iPhone Drive from Ecamm: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iphonedrive/ [alert admin]

ShoveBox 1.0 (Mac OS X)

just wondering

I see lots of organizers and helper utils appear as of lately. Would be great to have an overview with them all listed and tested. I just don't see why I should use this util instead of, say, Yojimbo...or Eagle Filer? [alert admin]

fails to update feeds

I've now used NNWL for about 3 weeks and I guess until last week I would've called this app "all over nice". But then my feeds stopped to update...just like that. I've trashed the prefs and cleaned out the application support folder as well - all sans success. Needless to say that I'm not considering to pay for the update. Could someone maybe recommend a decent RSS reader (shareware is okay) from a company that answers emails, fixes bugs etc. ? /tia [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 11.0.1 (Mac OS X)

why does this crap still exist?

Please someone, make this util disappear. It used to be a flawless utility sans problems - now it's buggy, slow and dials home...not to mention obsolete. [alert admin]

DiskTracker X 2.3.3 (Mac OS X)

DT vs DL

How does this app stack up against that new "DiskLibrary" app? Does DL import/read DT catalogues? Since I'm really fed up with the way DT never really gets updated (network issues, no spotlight support, OS 7.5 GUI, no UB etc.) - I'm just curious if someone compared the two apps. /tia [alert admin]
