LaCie SilverKeeper 1.1.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
What a gem! All other backup programs gone from my HD ![]()

I've used Carbon Copy Cloner, iBackup, SuperDuper, and DejaVu prior to trying SilverKeeper. Out of them all, and considering features and cost, I've decided on SilverKeeper. SK is the only backup program on my Mac now. Save the $30 SuperDuper and DejaVu will cost you and go with SilverKeeper for making bootable backups of your Mac. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Old pricing - $19.95 - listed in latest 2.0 download
When you go to register SuperDuper! 2.0 by clicking the lock symbol for automatic authentication in the main window, a new window opens which says: "Registering unlocks this feature as well as many others -- and it's reasonably priced at $19.95. Please help fund SuperDuper's development and support -- you'll be glad you did, and so will we!" Then when you use the esellerate app to buy a reg code, the price changes to $27.95. I understand that is the new price, but apparently someone forgot to change a window from version 1. [alert admin]

Capture Me 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Capture me does what is says. And it captures from DVD player, while the Mac OS disables this option. And this is freeware. 5 stars all around. One thing to note with ever widening displays: it only captures up to 1000 pixels wide. [alert admin]

StarWarsScroll Screen Saver works exactly as advertised. The Read Me gives easy install directions and even tells you how you can add the Star Wars music if you want. For those that use screensavers and are a Star Wars fan, this is a gem to add to your Mac. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 6.0 (Mac OS X)
Maybe Apple doesn't want this out yet...
When I first opened iTunes 6 it said something about needing Quicktime 7.03. I checked, and QT 7.03 is not available. Maybe VT can post that one also, or else the user may want to wait. But playback of my songs still works. [alert admin]

I love being able to monitor my system right in my menu bar. All of the custom options are very nice to give it the look you want. I monitor CPU, memory, and network in my menu bar. Then to top it off the author makes it freeware. On a scale of one to five, this is a ten. [alert admin]

Symantec Uninstaller 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Now there's a concept ... instead of providing updaters and fixes for your software, just create an uninstaller to get rid of the troublesome program. NICE! [alert admin]

TV Tracker 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
I was looking for a widget to give me OTA channels for my new HDTV. Downloaded and installed this widget and it is not working. Reading other current feedback, no one else is getting this to work either. Disappointing! [alert admin]

I'm one of those cheap people who never buy shareware ... I'll look for freeware alternatives with lesser functionality before I shell out my hard earned $. But this app offers functionality that is impossible to live without. Microsoft and Logitech make crap drivers for Mac OS X, but USB Overdrive takes over where these others fail. Now I've purchased a Logitech MX1000, and its nice to see USB Overdrive able to configure all the buttons, even the side-to-side scroll wheel functions. This is the only shareware app that has earned my money and respect, so it also earns 5 stars. (I haven't installed Tiger yet; will next week. I hope all works well) [alert admin]

Can anyone compare this to SilverKeeper?
SilverKeeper can make a bootable clone, you can schedule backups, synchronize folders, compare backups to original folders, exclude certain items from a backup, it has an easy to use user interface supporting drag-and-drop, comes with detailed instructions using Apple's Help Viewer (like all other Apple apps), and is supported well and continues to be updated. With the 2.0 release, it appears SuperDuper can now do most of the same, but it costs $28 to unlock…

New dual layer PowerBook drives report bad sectors
You might want to try an alternative program called DVDBackup. It essentially does the same thing. Although is an older program, it may work for you in the interum while MTR is not. I don't know why Versiontracker no longer lists this the app DVDBackup, but you can find it at macupdate.com at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10757

VT rocks! Now they've also posted QT 7.03. And ahead of Apple. Maybe it'll show up in SU tonight or tomorrow. Be the first to get it here. :)

Support: many freeware products offer support; and if a product works, you won't need support. Just because you pay for something does not make it higher quality or more reliable. MPEG Streamclip has a 4.7 star rating here on VT, and DVDxDV only has a 3.7 star rating. Point proven, if you ask me.

In the 3D tab on the left, you need to go in that window and select an application by clicking the "Add" tab. Then after selecting an app (like a game)you can make any changes.

Friend cannot get his images into iPhoto?
Sounds like a faulty memory card. Are you able to play back all the images on the camera LCD? Since you already backed up to CD, re-format the memory card, take a few pictures, and see if you still get this problem. If you do, and it the images play back fine in the camera, then it sounds like a software conflict with iPhoto and imagebrowser. Uninstall the Canon app and just use iPhoto.
