Quicksilver 1.0b45 (Mac OS X)
I've been using Quicksilver as my launcher for several months now. I was using Launchbar, which I liked, but I switched, and, for one reason or another, haven't switched back. At any rate, one of the first things I do when setting up a new user account on a Mac is to install Quicksilver and make sure it launches when I log in. As far as the criticism of the icon, I can see how it might be confused with the symbol for females. The astrological symbol for the planet Mercury just happens to be similar. The element mercury is nicknamed "quicksilver." Once you get the associations, the icon makes sense. (See how it looks like a pool of mercury?) [alert admin]

Apple iWork '05 (Mac OS X)
I must admit that any upgrade to AppleWorks is welcome, even if it is not arranged like the old AW. I admit I am disappointed that a spreadsheet is not included. I wonder how powerful the tables are in Pages--will they do calculations? I was concerned about the lack of a drawing/painting module; however, I get the feeling that those capabilities are included in the Pages program (or maybe in Keynote). What I'd really like to see is a competitor for Microsoft Works for Windows--there hasn't been a Mac version in years. Works Suite for Windows includes Microsoft Word 2002 and is $79 (after $20 rebate), so it's comparable in price to iWork. There's a spreadsheet in there. If Apple adds a spreadsheet, it will make AppleWorks fans waiting for a feature-by-feature upgrade very happy. We'll probably have to wait until next year's keynote for that announcement. :-( [alert admin]

eSanta 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Great concept needs a few tweaks ![]()

First of all, thanks for making eSanta. It has added one more year to the magic time during which my kids still believe in Santa Claus. I have just a couple recommendations, though. First, Santa definitely needs to remember to run his spell-checker before sending his letter next year. My third grader only needed one read of her letter to pick out "suprise." Second, I was disappointed not to be able to use the program on my wife's original iBook, which has a maximum screen resolution of 800x600; the "submit" button is hidden below the edge of a screen on such a small display, and in Mac OS X there is no way to move a window's title bar above the top edge, as is possible in classic Mac OS. Finally, it would be nice if, after clicking "Send email to Santa," there was a confirmation dialog box offering the option to cancel--I stupidly hit Return instead of Tab before finishing my 5-year old's letter, and had to use some diversionary tactics while I waited until the 'contacting Santa' routine completed before I could return to her letter to finish. All in all, a really wonderful piece of software. [alert admin]

TintinYahtzee 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Great idea; scoring needs work ![]()

I, too, was captivated by the idea of combining the Tintin characters and Yahtzee. The game interface is very good; however, the scoring routines need tweaking. I rolled a small straight of 2,3,4,5, yet was not allowed to score it in the small straight column. If the scoring is fixed, this becomes my Yahtzee game. Until then, I will stay with Yahtzee X. Print Explosion Deluxe 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)
Jaguar, the 10.2.4 Combo Update will take any version of Jaguar (10.2.x) and update it to 10.2.4. Search for "10.2.4" here at VersionTracker, and look for the Combo Update. It's hefty--80megs--but it's worth it for those struggling with Software Update. --Books [alert admin]

Wapp pro 3.3.1 (Mac OS 9)
Wapp Pro and FinderPop: I use WP and FP on both my home and work computers and haven't experienced a conflict in either Mac OS 9.2.1 or Mac OS X Classic mode. Love this utility and recommend it highly. [alert admin]

MenuStrip 2.0 (Mac OS X)
great app. It looks like it belongs up there in the menu bar. The 'hide all' and 'one app' options are terrific, as well as having volume and resolution access at all times. Love the chime on the hour feature of the clock too, Never understood why they didn't include one in the Mac OS X clock. Three suggestions: Add a basic pop-up calendar plug in; move the preferences to the System Preferences panel, and consider making it a 10.1 menu bar extra, like the volume control in Mac OS X.1 Great, great job. Apple Mac OS X 10.0.4 (Mac OS X)
installed flawlessly, with one or two noticeable improvements in each release. However, I'm still waiting for some things--support of my printer, an Epson Color Stylus 640, and my joystick, a Saitek Cyborg 3D USB. Both are supported under Mac OS 9, but will not work under Classic. Otherwise, I'm becoming more and more accustomed to the Interface and the file structure. I'm looking forward to the day when I have no need to boot into Mac OS 9. [alert admin]

If this is a beta version of CCC, should it not be indicated somewhere in the version number or in the release notes? This looks to me like an update to a full-release version of the software. Plus, I would imagine sites like VersionTracker and other download sites are prime generators of downloads of CCC: I learned CCC had been updated from a VersionTracker daily alert. If that's so, then I would…

I, too, find it aggravating that Firefox doesn't have spellchecking (sorry, I don't see how the *lack* of spellchecking can be a "feature"). Firefox, unlike Safari, isn't written in Cocoa and therefore cannot take advantage of certain Mac OS X features like access to the Mac OS X Services. I was going to say "use Camino, instead," since Camino is written in Cocoa (I believe), but I don't see access to spellchecking in…

If you had registered and established an online account with Roxio, your CD key would be available to you upon logging in. FYI.

Actually, the way the sentence is constructed, "me" is the correct choice. While it is correct to say, "thank you for writing to the elves," it would not be correct to say "thank you for writing to I." If the sentence had read, "The elves and me thank you for writing...," it would be necessary to correct "me" to "I."
