DiskWarrior 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Does not work on Mac Pro dual Quad Core (2008)

This update DOES work on my older Mac Pro, but will not run on my 2008 Mac Pro Dual Quad Core system. The system boots from the updated CD, continues for about 30 seconds, and then reboots, endlessly repeating the cycle. Since this is actually using TIGER (and not Leopard), perhaps I shouldn't be surprised it won't boot the latest Mac Pro. But then again, for the last year Alsoft seems to find itself WAY behind the 8-ball. What used to be an essential utility has relegated itself to an also-ran. Based upon their track record, we will probably see a LEOPARD version as soon as Apple releases 10.6. Pathetic. Back to the drawing board, Alsoft. [alert admin]

This is NOT a new update for LE

Folks - Pro Tools 7.4 LE came out MONTHS ago. Yes, there is a 7.4.1 for Pro Tools HD which makes it compatible with Leopard (10.5.1, by the way). So, Pro Tools LE users, don't get too excited about this very tardy posting on Version Tracker. [alert admin]

OmniFocus 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Best of class

As someone who has been searching for a true "system" to manage everything I need to do, OmniFocus is a Godsend. It does take some getting used to, and learning a new vocabulary, but it's time well spent. Get the book "Getting Things Done" by David Allen, and learn the concepts. It makes total sense, and it's no wonder that GTD is the foundation for several "productivity management" applications. With respect to OmniFocus, it has been entirely stable, intuitive, and flexible. It includes excellent features (like time stamping, and intelligent context and date assignments) Future enhancements (like an iPhone-based version) will make this truly a class-leading program. I also tried iGTD, which appears nice, but lacks the maturity and features of OmniFocus. I evaluated this program for 14 days, and sprung for the purchase. I am impressed by its completeness as a 1.0 version, and have no regrets. [alert admin]

Daylite 3.5 (Mac OS X)

Nice, but not ready yet...

I downloaded the demo, and for all intents and purposes, this product does what it says. However, I deleted it from my system for the following reasons: 1) It places a pretty hefty load on your system. Synchronizations, which occur often, spike the CPU (and I'm running a Dual 1.8GHz G5 with 2GB RAM). 2) There is no capability to link external documents (like Word, Excel, Powerpoint files) to anything inside Daylite. 3) Entering a new contact should automatically detect existing organizations, and offer to capture and use that data (address, for example) for the new contact. 4) Too expensive for a single user. I would suggest offering a scaled-down version that omits database sharing. 5) Auto-dialing simply does not work for me. I get two tones from my internal, original equipment Mac modem, and then dialing stops. Perhaps revision 4.0 can entice me to go with this, but for now, I'm holding off. [alert admin]

MPFreaker 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)

Astoundingly Good

Compared to other alternatives, I believe this is best available. It has an excellent, intuitive UI, fast operation without hogging the CPU and is pretty thorough and accurate. I would give it about a 90% hit rate in grabbing information. The proof is in the putting. I plunked down the $20 shareware fee with no regrets. [alert admin]

MoneyWell 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

WAY too slow

I imported about 10 year's worth of Quicken data, and doing ANYTHING in this program results in a spinning beach ball or LONG delay. For example, simply switching between accounts takes about 15 seconds. (I'm running a dual 1.87GHz G5, 2GB RAM). Startup takes about 8 seconds, and just selecting menu items spins the ball for a few seconds. Even window resizing is bizarre and painfully slow. Unacceptable. In contrast, Quicken exhibits ZERO delay when doing anything. Not that I like Quicken - I HATE it and their draconian update policy. I am desperately seeking a Quicken alternative. I'm certain the concept is promising, but this program is not ready for prime time. As soon as someone creates a truly good-performing Quicken alternative that adheres to Mac human interface standards, they will have more business than they can imagine. The race is on. Keep trying! iBank 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Not suitable for lots of data

I downloaded the demo, and proceded to import my Quicken .qif file, which did work - however it took almost 12 HOURS. I have loads of accounts and lots of records spanning back about 8 years. After import the data file was about 6MB. The program stalled when switching between accounts. Startup is also very slow. Another deficiency is the inability to hide inactive accounts in the account list. Perhaps new users with small quantities of data will find this program OK, but it's not ready to handle extensive data. Too bad - I really wanted to get away from Quicken, but despite it's warts and draconian update policy, Quicken is still king. [alert admin]

Not suitable for lots of data

Well, I tried 2.3.3, and the program is still glacially slow. Importing my QIF file took 12 hours. Simply navigating between accounts results in incessant spinning beach balls. Yes, I did select "show recent" but it's still occasionally necessary to view all account transactions. In that mode, the program chokes. This program is simply not suited for big data files. I believe the developer lacks the expertise to optimize its performance,…

Too expensive!

It's only expensive if you're comparing this against a cheap mouse. However, for serious control using devices like the Logitech MX Revolution, this is a SOLID and VALUABLE alternative to the standard Logitech driver. Also, USB overdrive, while nice, seems to be a "part time" project for the developer. I have no confidence we'll see an update soon. In the meantime, this application has risen to the top of the heap.

No Intel updates since 5/11/05?

I got a prompt reply from Alsoft indicating they would email me when an update is available, and would deliver the Intel update charging only shipping & handling. This is good news, although I'm still mystified why the Intel version is taking so long.

Version 7.9 works

An update to my original review: There IS regression. HP is now using "HP Scan Pro" which is slower, and does not remember the previous settings. It is less useful than the old HP Scan utility for everyday document archiving. Also, there is a Print dialogue box anomaly when selecting the scanner.
