ImageJ 1.42f (Mac OS X)
We have been using it for years at my University. Keeping in mind the price, and the collaborative method used to develop it, I think it is an awesome product. It is very versatile, and we use if for electron microscopy, astronomical images, and everything in between. It is mostly designed for medical/biology uses though. [alert admin]

OsiriX 3.3 (Mac OS X)
I am not a medical professional, but (unforunately) have had some issues necessitating some medical imaging over the past year or so. I recently had an MRI, and they gave me a CD with the image files. OsiriX was great way for me to study the images. It worked superbly in 2-d and 3-d modes, and has many useful and intuitive features. I haven't used other programs of a similar nature, but this one worked so very well for me that I didn't have any motivation to look elsewhere. [alert admin]

Adobe Flash Player 10.0.0.525 (Mac OS X)
I maintain a lot of Macs, and I still have trouble with flash player. Just now I installed it on my home machine (intel iMac, OSX 10.5.4). First, repair permissions, then use the adobe uninstaller, then install the 10.0.0.525 version, then repair permissions. I go to cnn and try to play something and I get the dreaded "...Please insure the Flash... is installed" I'm really, really tired of this. Sometimes I get it to work, and sometimes I don't. Maybe I have to wait for the full moon. The version 9 worked, but the previous version 10 beta did the same thing. Just what magic am I lacking. [alert admin]

Don't use 1.9.1, 1.9.2 already released to fix a major bug
1.9.1 is flawed. Use 1.9.2 [alert admin]

CEDICT for Apple Dictionary 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Installation note, and comment
First I made a new folder "CEDICT.dictionary" in /Library/Dictionaries Next I unzipped the download and put the resulting folder "Contents" into the CEDICT.dictionary folder I just created. Then it shows up and works fine in Dictionary.app I am very pleased with CEDICT. I strongly recommend it. [alert admin]

Tumult HyperEdit 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
Can't download. Dev seems to have not paid for his url/hosting, or some such thing, because the web site is dead. Bummer because I wanted to try it out. I'm pretty happy with Taco Edit and Smultron though (hint to other potential users). [alert admin]

ConceptDraw MINDMAP 4.2 (Mac OS X)
I have seen this type of program and I just don't get it. OK, it makes pretty pictures that you can connect with assorted lines. I am absolutely baffled that these programs sell for fairly big dollars, and they all seem to be just doodle pads for idea connecting. I realize that there seems to be a market, but users haven't come close to convincing me that they actually do anything. [alert admin]

If Apple explained what they actually do on permission repair
Something is wrong with your computer then. I oversee about 50 Macs, of many varieties, and I have never seen one take that long. I have a dual g5, and it only takes a few minutes.

I'm not an idiot. I point out that the product is flawed and stated exactly how. Some users may want to know that before they waste their time. You need to take a chill pill.

just to add -- I did everything from an administrator account, and tested it on the same account. I have reinstalled version 9, and fortunately it seems to be working.

I have been using it for a long time, at home and work, and other workers use it too. We have never had a problem on OSX 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5.

I use it at home on my dual core iMac under OSX 10.4.10. The FAQ the developer has says it will, just not as fast.

I have just used NeoOffice to read/write .docx files, and it has worked well for me. I wonder how NeoOffice would do against your test files.

I got a different story, $69.99
I own Version 7, and here is what they sent me in response to my complaint about this pricing structure... Roxio sez-- The mail in rebate found on the website is only for customers who have a previous version of Roxio/Sonic Software. This is not for first time buyers. First time buys would pay Retail Price of $99.99 If you are a registered user who has opted to receive our promotional emails, you would have received an email promotion for Toast…

No problem on my Intel iMac... Maybe the problem is not intrinsic to the update, or maybe it is, but not widespread. What is your hardware?
