Leap 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Consider an Alternative

Leap is an interesting and useful product to make Spotlight searching much more convenient and powerful, but users should also consider HoudahSpot 2.0, another very useful tool to aid Spotlight searches. It is less than half the price. I looked at both and bought HoudahSpot. [alert admin]

HoudahSpot 2.0.8 (Mac OS X)

Terrific search tool

HouhdahSpot greatly simplifies focussed spotlight searches. It allows standard searches to be saved as quickly accessible templates. The 2.1 version looks even more promising. [alert admin]

Skim 0.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Skim is a great pdf viewer

I have been using Acrobat as my primary pdf reader because of the markup tools it provides and the ability to create "real" bookmarks. After exploring Skim, I am switching to it as my default reader. It is certainly cheaper, but more importantly, I think it's features make it a better reader. It doesn't create "real" bookmarks, but it's notes feature is almost equivalent and is more convenient. The snapshot feature is a big aid to anybody reading scientific literature, but helpful to others also. Little features like the magnifier tool are also nice. [alert admin]

FoxTrot Personal Search 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Just gets better and better

I have a variety of indexing and searching tools: Spotlight, PathFinder, EagleFiler. Foxtrot is just head and shoulders ahead of everything else in capability. It finds every instance of a search term within a document and highlights them and allows you to jump from instance to instance and even gives a popup menu that shows all the instances in a short context. It is wonderful to have my Entourage emails listed by subject line rather than a cryptic file name. I wrote an earlier review but the product has improved so much in capability and reliability that it deserves a new review. [alert admin]

FaxCenter 1.5 build 12 (Mac OS X)

Finally, a critical update

Sending white on black faxes makes a sender very unpopular with recipients. It took too long to update to fix this bug with 10.4, but I am glad to have it back. I had switched to the built-in OS X fax capability, but I like Fax Center better and will switch back to it now. [alert admin]

FoxTrot Personal Search 1.0.9 (Mac OS X)

Makes Spotlight truly useful

Superb interface for searching. Quickly sort results by type, date, etc. and the preview window is what a truly useful search tool must have. It would be nice to have instant indexing, but foxtrot indexing is fast even if you do it manually and painless if you leave your computer on and have done automatically at 4 am. Release notes for 1.09 should warn you to add ~/Library/Caches/Metadata to locations to be indexed if you want your Entourage messages to be indexed properly. [alert admin]

Roxio Popcorn 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Upgrading from Version 1.03

Has anyone else had a problem in upgrading from Version 1.03? I enter my name and legitimate CD key, but the upgrade won't proceed. [alert admin]

Path Finder 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

PF 4 is a great improvement

I have found PF 4 to be very stable. It gives you a variety of ways to navigate file systems. The bookmarks bar is very useful--especially when combined with my Default Folder Favorites and Recent Folders. Tabs are a great thing in browsers and probably will be almost as useful for navigating files (PF needs a more complete open in tabs option. It is an excellent frnt end for Spotlight and its Preview capabilities are far superior to those of the Finder. It just makkes working with files a lot more efficient. [alert admin]

Trash X 1.7.7 (Mac OS X)

A useful utility

I am surprised this does get a higher rating. I find it useful to be able to delete the trash on my USB drive without also emptying the trash on my hard drive. It is also useful to be be able to immediately delete some files again without emptying the full trash. Emptying trash can be dangerous and I like the extra control and flexibility Trsh X gives. AbiWord 2.2.7 (Mac OS X)

Must better handling of Word Perfect imports

One very useful feature of Abiword and NeoOffice is their ability to convert Word Perfect documents to formats more usable on a Mac. 2.2.7 is much at this than earlier versions. It is faster than NeoOffice and of course has a much more Mac like interface. A good word processing alternative. [alert admin]
