IPNetSentry 1.3.9 (Mac OS 9)

worth it, even if you only have a dial-up PPP connection

This sort of protection is plainly needed with OS X and/or if you have a 'constant on' connection to the Internet such as a cable modem or DSL. But is it really needed if you have only Classic, such as Mac OS 9.2.2, installed on your system and you also use only an intermittent dial-up modem connection ? Well, after 2 weeks of trying out IPNetSentry.PPC, I finally got an alert that someone was attempting to intrude into my system. That convinced me to splash ot the $40.00 which is more than a day's pay for me. I am online for 15-25 hours a week. Plus I am impressed that Sustworks lives in the real world where the majority of Mac users are not yet using OS X, and is still releasing updates for Classic users. Before I registered, I had filed a bug report and I got a prompt detailed helpful reply. [alert admin]

PageSpinner 4.5d1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

DoktorJesse & Typhoon…

: The Preview of PS 4.5 [http://www.spinnerworld.com/download/mirror/pagespinner-45d1.sit] is for registered users of recent versions of PS---hence the need to enter rego. #. This is explained on Optima's web site, but alas the ReadMe is a poorly edited version which includes this limitation and later also the usual 21day trial offer which is actually for the current release version PS 4.1.1 [http://www.spinnerworld.com/download/mirror/pagespinner-411.sit]   [alert admin]

Data Recycler has…

2 crucial extra functions, beyond undeleting trashed files, as an essential addition to ProSoft's 'Data Rescue X'. The great limitation of 'Data Rescue X' under OS X was that deleted files are actually physically deleted much more rapidly than they typically are under Classic Mac OS. Data Recycler preserves these 'deleted' files, and it also keeps an updated list--or map---of all your files and their locations, to be used in the case of a corruption emergency. This map can be used by Data Rescue X to quickly and effectively recover all of your files without the need to perform a timeconsuming file scan operation. See the Data Recycler overview at http://www.prosoftengineering.com/downloads/documents/8700-0002-Data_Recycler_Overview.pdf . As these file scans can otherwise take as much as 10-20 hours or longer this has to be an essential addition. [alert admin]

Tri-BACKUP 3.1.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

If you have…

not moved to OS X, 4 out of 5 Mac users have not yet, then note that Tri-Backup includes both the Classic and OS X versions of its application for the same price that ProSoft charge for each of their licensed versions of Tri-Backup which ProSoft calls 'Data Backup'. On the other hand, examination with the ResCompare utility of the most recent Classic versions of both shows lots of differences between them. In addition, ProSoft optionally include a Boot CD with the Classic Data Backup which Tri-Backup does not. [alert admin]

The correct URL…

for the English language updater for RagTime Solo 5.6.1 to 5.6.2 is actually [http://www.ragtime5.de/Pub/solo/RagTime_5.6.2/EUS/RT_Solo_5.6.1-5.6.2_en.bin]. The installer is dated July 16, 2002. The English language homepage for RagTime is [http://www.ragtime-online.com/]. An OS X-native version of RagTime is planned for release this quarter, and the 2nd public beta of it has been available for some time. The OS X version will require OS 10.2.x, and it will cost US $99 as an upgrade from a full version of RagTime 5.5 or 5.6. A freeware OS X version is being considered. The freeware Classic version is a full version but it can only be used for non-profit personal use. [alert admin]

Prosoft's tech support…

tell me that the Classic version for Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.2 is expected to be released in a couple of weeks from now. Nice to see a developer who realises that 4 out of 5 Mac users do not use OS X. [alert admin]

iData Pro 1.0.5 (Mac OS 9)

The 1.0.5 updaters…

have been posted, even though all the relevent website pages still refer to v. 1.0.3c released Sept. 18th 2002, about a week late as seems to be usual. Just follow the instructions on their site, and then before you click upon the final download button check that it actually links to "idatapro105update.hqx" [alert admin]

File Buddy 7.2.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Skytag has recently…

posted a superb & thoughtfully designed 166 page User Guide, as pdf file, as a 4.3 MB archive on [http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy/7/download.html]. Depending upon which browser and which version of StuffIt Expander you use, your Mac may perhaps encounter the archive as "FileBuddy7UserGuide.sit-binhex.hqx" which will confuse it as it expects a "." rather than a "-" between the "sit" and the "bin". If you have this problem, just edit the file name in the Finder and then drag it afresh onto StuffIt Expander, and all should be well. [alert admin]

iCab 2.8.2 (Mac OS 9)

iCab is now…

IMHO the only serious alternative to MS Internet Explorer for non-OS X Mac users who are still 4 out of 5 of all Mac users. On Friday Dec. 13th 2002, mozilla.org stopped support for Mac Classic users, for any version after the Mozilla 1.2.1 release, apart from asking a volunteer to port the nightly builds to Mac Classic [http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=2756]. My impression is that the many serious bugs in the Mac Classic versions of Mozilla are now mostly rather unlikly to be ever fixed e.g. clipping of text on the right when printing, and keyboard locking up, etc. iCab apparently has 10 unique features, see [http://www.icab.de/info.html]. Looks interesting, but...

Works fine for me under Mac OS 10.5.7 on a MacMini [the one from about 2 years ago, not the one released in early March 2009].

Great Candidate for PerversionTracker ...

"The interface is ugly as sin" as the B&B 8.0 application runs natively on all 3 of 68xxx, PowerPC, and OS X systems so the user interface has to be limited to what will work under Mac OS 7.0 which is still used by a lots of Mac users. The developers of B&B limited their detailed explanations to error codes that are actually encountered in the real world, and provide a free service to *anyone* who…
