Apple Safari 4.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Can't believe this nightmare

What? Safari that used to be so great, made by our dear Apple, has now become complete crap? Like the others said: this is turning into a nightmare with the endless beachballs and the waiting: it takes forever to open a new tab, and more and more often, Safari actually crashes. I realized today that I was better off using FireFox 3.5.3. I'm in a state of shock: how could they do that to us? Don't they test their software before release anymore? This is scary, c'mon Apple get it back right, cos now I'm dropping Safari, and THAT is a revolution to me. [alert admin]

CDFinder 5.5 (Mac OS X)

Works perfectly

I must say I'm very impressed. I thought Virtual Machines weren't recognized (cf. my previous post) but it was only a matter of deactivating an option in the preferences. I therefore correct my evaluation: this app rocks by all means and it undoubtedly deserves 5 stars. Also the developper's response is terrific. [alert admin]

CDFinder 5.5 (Mac OS X)

No Virtual Machines recognition?

I'm evaluating CDFinder 5.5 and I'm quite disapointed about one thing: it doesn't recognize virtual machines from Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Instead, the catalogue says the folder size containing the virtual machine is 0 Bytes, which means you have to calculate these sizes manually! Not very practical and quite annoying, because CDFinder is otherwise great. Hope the author finds a fix. [alert admin]

Transmission 1.42 (Mac OS X)

Weird update

I was doing OK with 1.4 (DL at 30 KB/s and UL at 140 KB/s). Then I installed 1.4.2 and ... no more uploads!! DL is the same but UL is at 0 KB/s. Trying to switch back to an earlier version, and all I find is a 1.2.2. OK, go for that one and another surprise: DL's still the same, but the UL is now up to 260 KB/s!!?? I thought upgrades were supposed to enhance usability, but apparently that's not the way things work :) [alert admin]

phpMyAdmin 2.11.8.1 (Mac OS X)

You're an idiot...

... if you think you can use this product without sweat and tears. The docs are only there to make you go crazy from the very start. Simply installing the thing in order to test it is a challenge by itself (unless you're a Unix geek of course). Instead of just telling you what's required and how to install, they make you go back and forth for hours and in the end it doesn't work anyway. I'll stick to CocoaMysql. [alert admin]

Skype 2.5.0.85 (Mac OS X)

Doesn't work

I tried everything. Bought a Skype certified phone from the Skype webshop, also bought a Mac/Skype compatible headset, but same problem: works a few seconds then my voice turns into garbage and people don't hear anything at all. I end up making new calls from my mobile, which is quite expensive. I also tried with a 1.5 version. I have a G5 (10.4.8) with lots of RAM and a good connection (and yes I have SkyMacMate). I also tried on a G4 that runs only Panther and no extras. Same result. What gives? There's no way to get help from Skype, and no solution in their forums either. [alert admin]

ClamXav 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Hangs

ClamXav seems to work well on some folders, but it hangs on others for no apparent reason. Even with small folders containing only small files, it suddenly stops progressing, and keeps reporting "currently checking" that same folder for ever. This means I can never check my whole Mail folder (1 GB), because ClamXav stops working after 2 or 3 folders. Pretty useless then... Neither the help pages nor the forums provide any sort of explanation for that issue. [alert admin]

Command & Conquer Generals 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Heavy crashing

I don't know: I've been playing Zero Hour for more than a year, and I used to be totally addicted. It worked absolutely perfectly., and if i could give it 6 stars, I would. But lately it's been crashing on me, and more and more often (the heavy kind of crash with full freeze and hard reboot). Even after quitting all other apps, repairing permissions, running DiskWarrior, reinstalling, running from another system etc... The support team at Aspyr was quick to respond, but they couldn't do much: they advised me to delete some files that may have become corrupted. Which I did. But it's still crashing. As a matter of fact, it has become impossible to play: the game's just gone. Since the problem started a few weeks ago, could it be that the file corruption is caused by Tiger 10.4.5 or one of the Security Updates? An incredibly sad story. I honestely can't recommend Zero Hour until this crashing issue's solved. [alert admin]

"Application Not Responding"

Same here, version 1.74 stops working after a while, and deleting preferences doesn't help. I ended up going to the developper's site and downloaded version 1.70 which works perfectly as it used to: * http://download.m0k.org/transmission/files/

Permissions - lots of permission problems

There was a bunch of permission issues before, and they're still here after installing the combo-update 10.5.8. Not a big deal but a little annoying; hope Apple fixes that in Snow Leopard.

No Virtual Machines recognition? - But it does!

YES indeed it does. I didn't realize "Ignore Package Contents" needed to be deactivated in the prefs; now it works perfectly. Also, many thanks for an incredibly fast feedback!

Weird update

I don't really have a problem, it's just that the different versions give apparently completely wild results, with 1.22 providing better upload speeds than version 1.40 and then 1.40 was better than 1.42, since there's no more uploads with that newest version. So yes, downgrading to 1.22 seems to give better results as far as I can see...

You're an idiot...

Sorry if my evaluation did hurt your feelings, but the truth is: this is the worst soft I've been through, and it made me waste many hours because of it's lousy installation procedures and pseudo explanations. I do use MySql even though I dislike phpMyAdmin, and I'm certainly not expecting anyone to give me the permission to do so. Cheers.

I Don't know

Hey xkont, 1.000 thanks to you! After several months experimenting with different USB mikes, I gave up trying to get Skype to work at all. But yesterday I followed your advice, and bought a cheap Bluetooth headset to test it. And it works both in and out!! Not a clear nice sound, but at least it's a working solution. My wallet is going to be much happier thanks to you.

Found a workaround

Great thanks. Now it would be perfect if Volume Logic remained active also after quitting iTunes: you have to change the audio output and back each time you restart iTunes. But hey, at least the workaround works!

You can automate it and disable the password checking

Can you please be more specific? How can I do this? Thanks.
