Meteorologist 1.4.4 (Mac OS X)

Issues under 10.4.9?

Updates seem partially broken for me under 10.4.9, on multiple machines, the symptom is the same: application picks up data the first time, but not afterwards. (Sometimes it won't get any data at all even at startup.) Anyone else seeing this behavior? [alert admin]

FurthurNet 1.7.5 (Mac OS X)

This application ROCKS in more ways than one!

I've been using Furthur for about 3 years now and can say without reservation that this is the most useful and most-used application for me since the advent of OS X. With trade-friendly bands only, this is the one p2p music-trading application that is actually legal and ethical. It supports a wide variety of audio and video formats (yes video is supported, for video-trading-friendly bands). The list of "trade-friendly" bands might surprise you, check Furthur's list out at http://furthurnet.org/bandlist/

A vibrant and vital piece of Furthur is its community, a host of dedicated individuals who are ready to help out newcomers, resolve issues, and police the network's content to ensure that prohibited material doesn't compromise the integrity and legal status of the network. Interaction happens through the application's built-in chat client, and through Furthur's forum web pages. Numerous friendly folk are always around to answer questions and offer assistance.

This application just plain works, to put it simply. I have obtained hundreds of high-quality, legal concert recordings from Furthur, virtually hassle-free. So what if it's Java? It says what it does and does what it says. And, importantly, there is NO SPYWARE or advertising associated with it. This is about as "on the up and up" as you can get in this arena.

The only weakness that might possibly merit mention is the fact that when the logon server goes down the application will not launch, and that particular server has gone down for days at a time on more than one occasion. While these episodes are rare, server redundancy for this routine would be a welcome improvement. But, when everything's accomplished using volunteer equipment and time, it's hard to complain!

Furthur is, however, not for everyone. It is for people who respect the wishes of artists regarding the sharing of their live concert recordings. Those who wish to download or distribute material that is not explicitly trade-friendly should look elsewhere. Use of any part of Furthur to aid in such activities, including the chatroom, is strictly verboten.

More FREE and LEGAL music downloads than you can shake a stick at! What's not to love? [alert admin]

Meteorologist 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Another format change?

I've used this wonderful little app for quite a while now, and apart from the frequent website format changes that force the app to be tweaked, it's been very reliable. Apparently another of these changes has occurred, as the app is failing to pull any data as of today. [alert admin]

NewsYouCanUse 2.7 (Mac OS X)

Nice idea, but has issues

This little app is a great idea, but there are a lot of problems here that make this seem more like a beta release. Beachball-hangs and unexpected quits are common when working in the Newsfeeds window, and one must frequently close this window to save changes or you will find your efforts lost when it decides to crash. App sometimes quits on its own for no apparent reason. Some preference settings are not available unless the option to show the dock icon is selected, and most changes to prefs don't stick or take effect at all, leading to a frustrating "turn dock icon on, quit app, relaunch app, change pref, turn dock icon off, quit app, relaunch app" loop that just begins again when the pref maddeningly goes back to what it was before. Manually editing pref files doesn't seem to help here either (for instance no amount of coaxing I tried could successfully turn off the alert sound). It would be nice if the application could remember what's "new" on any given feed across restarts; the unexpected quits are particularly frustrating when restarting brings one back to an "everything unread" state. RSS newsfeeds accessed via the menubar is a great idea, but this isn't stable enough yet. (Issues were verified on 2 separate systems running 10.3.5.) [alert admin]

Dropdown menu functionality…

returned under 10.2.3 for me, not sure how or why (it reappeared on its own, no logout/login or restart involved). A great little app, though the "automatically change locations" function doesn't seem to work on either of my installs, but that's just a minor issue, still 5 star worthy. [alert admin]

Transmit X 2.2.0 (Mac OS X)

120 seconds is…

an arbitrary and utterly inadequate ceiling to impose on the "redial busy server" interval. I won't even bother rating this until that situation is remedied. [alert admin]

Issues under 10.4.9?

Apparently this was a transient issue, as everything's working OK again.

Another format change?

Late on the 31st my install started pulling some of the data again, but as of today still no current condition data, so all the icons are question marks.
