Beyond Compare 2.5.2 Build 252 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
Nothing beats this application for reconciling the differences between two directories. You can do a quick size and date comparison or a more thorough binary comparison. You can have it show you only the files that are different. Furthermore, it has a great filter system which allows you to ignore certain files or directories. This is especially nice when you have a lot of hidden directories (e.g. .svn) that you don't care about. For text files, you can view the differences side by side and even copy lines from one side to the other for merging. I use this for backing up files from my computer to an external drive which goes between work and home. One of the real beauties of this application is that, if you determine one file or directory needs to be copied over to the other side, you can immediately dispatch it and have it copied at once. Because you (typically) only display file differences, this difference immediately disappears and makes sorting out the rest cleaner and easier. This is fantastic for large, complex merges. It makes it as easy as possible. This application has a lot of bells and whistles yet is very intuitive and easy to us. I couldn't live without it. I only wish they had a version for the Mac; I can't find anything this good for the Mac platform. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 4124.0 (Mac OS X)
Transition was a little bumpy but it's working now ![]()

I upgraded from the March 2007 build. When I booted Win XP Pro, it did some strange things including bringing up the hardware wizard which could not install drivers for the new hardware. I shut it down, rebooted as Bootcamp. That rebooted twice before it came up and complained that it had recovered from a major problem. I rebooted back in Parallels. It wanted to install new hardware again. I ignored the new hardware wizard. A parallels program eventually started up to install new drivers. That worked and all my problems went away. Everything seems to be working very well now. There is a "Parallels Shared Application" item in the start menu. It looks like that can launch applications on the Mac side. It must have found every application and installer on my Mac side because it shows a zillion applications. I'm not sure how useful that is. Also, the Windows files system now mounts on the Mac. That's a nice addition. That should help moving files between the Windows and Mac sides. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 2.5 Build 3188.0 (Mac OS X)
I can't say enough about Parallels. It's like having two computers in my Mac Pro. I can run all those Windows programs I need and all the Mac programs that I love. Macs have never been better or more capable and this little piece of software really helps enable those capabilities. Performance and reliability are solid. This is truly great stuff. [alert admin]

LaCie Update Tool 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)
It found my F.A. Porsche Lacie drive to update and then caused a kernel panic on my Mac Pro. Dandy. Stay away from this terrible software. [alert admin]

SharePoints 3.5.4 (Mac OS X)
I needed to share a directory (with Windows sharing) on a second hard drive on my Mac. OS X doesn't let you do this. SharePoints solved the problem. I experienced no problems. Slick software. Works through control panel, too. I agree Apple should incorporate this into OS X. [alert admin]

This program used to work great. Now, since OS X 10.4.5 (may have actually started with 10.4.4), it crashes after rebuilding a disk. Alsoft doesn't seem to be acknowledging this problem. That is another problem. [alert admin]

Fetch 5.0.5 (Mac OS X)
I just learned here that Fetch works through firewalls since version 5.0.5. I just tried it and it works. Fantastic! Now, the FTP program I love best works everywhere I need it to work. [alert admin]

iDefrag 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)
I used 1.1.2 on a drive. It hung and hosed the drive. I downloaded 1.1.3 but was afraid to use it. After many months, I finally got the courage to give it another try on a different drive. It crashed and the drive was totally screwed up. This application is going in the trash. My money was wasted. [alert admin]

PCM data files are widely recognized as raw data files containing audio samples as signed integers. They are used all the time in audio/speech research where manipulating AIFF headers is cumbersome and unnecessary. Because, as you noted, "PCM" is not a standard file format like AIFF, a utility such as this is required to provide the necessary wrapper information and eliminate ambiguities. By the way, AIFF files do not necessarily contain PCM…
