A Cook's Books 1.2 (Mac OS X)
First off, I've used this program for many years, since it was offered as a low beta number, and have a lifetime license. The author is very helpful and responsive with email communication. You couldn't ask for more there. It is very stable. I never experience any crashes. It has many features included with it that others require you to purchase separately. Think Nutritional Information, planning menus for weeks out at a time. Creating shopping lists based on your upcoming menus. Features I don't use, but will weigh in on other peoples' decision. At the time of purchase, it was very promising, and still is, as long as you don't mind the interface. Many people do like it, and claim it sheds the "cutsey" goodness that is Aqua and eyecandy and all that. That's where it loses me now. The main window seems like nothing but a regular program's preference pane turned on its side. Check it out. Go to Mail, open preferences, click on Accounts. There's your A Cooks Book interface minus the toolbar along the top and the list along the left side. And of course it's right side up instead of on the side. I always put up with it because I was a lifetime licensee, and it is a solid program. Since Leopard, the annoying tabbing issue caused me to look at other options out there. I just finished up trying out many listed here and MacGourmet has stole my heart. I used it for about 5 minutes and I immediately fell in love with it. It is very Mac like, in that it is visually just like using Mail, iTunes, iCal iLife and iWork (all programs which I enjoy using). Is adding a toolbar eyecandy? I don't know. But it sure would be useful in A Cook's Book to enter a new recipe instead of having to choose it from the menu or keyboard shortcut. When I compose a new message in Mail, I don't use the keyboard shortcut to initiate it. So, farewell A Cook's Book for now. You have served me well in the past, and I will continue to look in on you time to time. But I have found something I like better right now, and you know what I am looking for should you ever want to bring in other users like me. [alert admin]

Upgraded, and good customer support ![]()

I couldn't get it to upgrade from 10.7 to 10.8. It said it was already up to date. So I scoured VT reviews and saw all the issues people were describing, and read how the customer support was lacking. I went directly to Smith Micro's web site and saw that it was indeed a free update for me from .7 to .8, tried the updated feature again, no dice. So I left a message through the customer support page. I had an automated response instantly, and a reply from a technician within a couple hours telling me that they had not finished putting it up on their update servers. They suggested I wait one day and try again. I waited until the end of the day and tried again. It worked flawlessly. Great customer support and great product. I've used it since 9.X and it has never crashed on me. When I first started using it (and the reason I bought it) I was faxing several times a day. Now it is just occasionally. I do think it's a bit overpriced, but what are you going to do? If you need something, you fork over the dough. [alert admin]

NewsHunter3 1.0.9 (Mac OS X)
Mike, it does have nag screens. I just downloaded and tried it for about 10 minutes. During that time, the NewsHunter Preferences window would open up to the registration tab. Now I don't know what you call that, but regular human folk call that a nag screen my friend. Another one just popped up on top of Omniweb while I was typing this!! That is just too much. It's not bad enough to have the nag screen (but deny it), but the nag screen will even come over another program running in the foreground. Nice interface, but you'll never make the money you could if you lowered the price to normal news reader price between $25-$40. I would opt for the $40 on the high end because of the offline capabilities. But don't say there are no nag screens when the preference window opens up to the registration tab every few minutes. Good grief. Now that I know you are a liar, I will never buy this, even if you drop the price. If you lie to me before the point of sale, what will you do afterwards? I'll stick to Unison for now, and anybody else would do good to stick to whatever they are using for now. [alert admin]

It works great as a checkbook program, and I can't wait to try out the home asset/inventory features. But I can't use it with my bank! I use zWachovia and I can't download any information. I get a couple error messages, and it tells me to call my bank. I called them, and they said they don't support quicken 2006 yet. Maybe by November. So, this makes the whole package useless for me. They must have changed something between 2005 and 2006 versions with the exchange of information. Until I can get this working, it gets one star across the board. So here I am stuck. I don't have any other version. I'm going to contact their customer support and see if they'll let me download 2005, or I'll just get a refund and buy 2005. They offer a 60 day return policy I believe. Meanwhile, I'll continue to use Money 2005 (on my PC). It still works. [alert admin]

Unison 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)
I've used Unison for quite some time now and I'm still very impressed with it. I just hope they continue to improve on it. When it gains 1 more very standard, and included with other news readers features, it will become my news reader. Unison seemed to be pushed out to the music/binary downloaders, and was not thought out quite far enough for universal use. Those two features are uploading capabilities, and offline reading. Most news readers offer offline reading, and if they don't, you can still manage to download all full articles if you wanted by using manual means. Unison can't handle this very simple, common, basic function. Dare I even call it a feature? That would be like calling the tire on my car an optional accessory. At least in my opinion. Other than that, great interface, good stability, and I hope they continue to improve in areas that really need it first before adding features other would find useless. Until then, I must do most of my discussion reading using Entourage. Wow, to think that Entourage's news reading capabilities can be better than a dedicated news reader just blows my mind. Microsoft Office 2004 11.1.0 (Mac OS X)
The auto update feature of Office worked very well. The actual update window was an archaic installer-vise, but the job was done without any hitches. I haven't really noticed any major speed improvement, as it was pretty snappy already. Kudos to MacBU for finally suppressing the bouncing Entourage icon when a server error has occurred. That's what I am most happy about. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.1 beta 1 (Mac OS X)
Another great set of improvements. I invested in OW while using the Public Beta of OS X. I was impressed with it then, and more than ever now. I find the speed of browsing to be about the same as with Safari or any of the Mozilla variants - fast. If someone is experiencing "dog-slow" performance, I'd say there are other issues at hand. That, or they are just exaggerating. It runs very snappy on my "slow" 700 MHz iBook. [alert admin]

I've only been using it for a couple of days now (obviously), but from what I've seen I love it! At work, Outlook Today is my default view, and I have always wished that Entourage had a similar view. Now it can! [alert admin]

Unison 1.5 (Mac OS X)
This is the product I am keeping my eye on most. The intuitive interface, fast loading, and eye candy make it hard to beat. There are two things keeping me from using it as my full time newsreader. When I can hit one button to "watch" a thread, and use it to do offline newsreading it will be my only newsreader. As it stands now, I only use it when looking for pictures, or binaries. I was really trying out your software and didn't particularly care for the nag screen, which you still haven't addressed other than trying to tell other folks that it doesn't exist. I'm making sure everyone knows that it did. And then I saw you giving your own application 5 stars??!!! I gave you an honest review. I posted that it has a nice interface, but also listed what I thought were flaws. But when you blatently…

You also have to wonder about an author who feels the need to keep giving his own application 5 stars to help bring the rating up due to the ever increasing poor ratings users are giving. Justifying the bloated price by offering "free" registration of software I don't want. Big deal. If I wanted them I'd buy them. Don't inflate your price to "give away" other software as well. I've spent way more on better…
