ffmpegX 0.0.9y (Mac OS X)

STILL can't download mpeg2enc!!!

I'm using PPC, so I need mpeg2enc from sourceforge, but every time I r-click to download it, or option-click to download the file, I get a blank document. This apparently has been going on for YEARS! A search on sourceforge shows that in July 2005, someone posted the following: >>>"I cannot download the mpeg2enc for MacX from your website. I've done it 3 times and all that gets downloaded is a blank document. I need the mpeg2enc so I can run ffmpegX. Please help!!!" The response was this: >>> "Did you press the option key (labled with ALT) on the keyboard when klicking the link ? It worked that way in Safari on OSX 10.3.x and 10.4.x" That was it, STATUS CLOSED! What else is nuts is that I am using a PPC, yet the ffmpeg application keeps asking me to install mpeg2enc.intel SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG HERE AND NOBODY SEEMS TO BE ADDRESSING IT [alert admin]

SimplyBurns rev298 (Mac OS X)

Sweet

I've been using this program about a month now, burned about 20 images/1:1 copies with it. It has performed flawlessly every time. It has a sweet looking interface, much nicer than most freeware programs out there, and it does exactly as advertised. Highly recommended. using Tiger 4.11 ppc and PBG4 [alert admin]

Audio Hijack Pro 2.8.1 (Mac OS X)

Still Crashes iDVD 06 and MovieGate also

Over a year ago I wrote that AHP, Instant Hijack feature crashed iDVD, where the themes of iDVD would not load but instead iDVD would crash at this point. I said that Unsanity was working to fix this problem (Apple also confirmed that AHP was the culprit). At this point, using Tiger 4.11 and the latest AHP 2.8.1, the problem still exists, HOWEVER now all one has to do is temporarily disable Application Enhancer, and upon restart, you can use iDVD with no problem. Temporarily disabling App Enhancer will work for one time, with one restart (a more permanent solution would be to uninstall it, but this is not necessary). How sure am I that the Instant Hijack feature is the culprit? Because I recently downloaded MovieGate (another DVD authoring program) and this crashes as well, unless I first temporarily disable App Enhancer, restart, and then launch MovieGate. Knowing all this, do I still recommend AHP? YES! You just have to be aware of this issue, and do the workaround. [alert admin]

Psst 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Still Works Great, only it hogs RAM

I love this program (see my past review Apr '07). My only problem with Psst is that it's a RAM hog. Why should a simple program that only needs to do one function, and one function only (set volume to a preset value prior to restart) use 13.4 Mb of real RAM? This may not seem like much, but let me put this value into perspective: Activity Monitor has shown me that Apple Mail comes in at 9.41 Mb of real RAM, and Finder at 10.9. The shared memory for these two apps are greater than Psst, which makes sense. But Psst shouldn't have a greater real RAM demand than these two programs, for sure. Therefore, I call this program a HOG! and I'd like to see the developer trim the fat on this great app. One other small nuisance: The Psst daemon for some reason occasionally loses it's identity in the Login Items, and I must then select it again for Psst to work. This along with the RAM problem makes me downgrade this version to 2 stars for Quality/Stability. ciao [alert admin]

Pif- Splitter 0.1 (Mac OS X)

This Program Works!

I was looking for a program that would split a Disk Image of my cloned Mac O/S, so that I could save the split image on DVD. This sounds risky, with the big question being: would the split DMG (6 pieces), be damaged when reconstructed to it's "original" state by Pif Splitter? Or would this DMG be in tact, and could then be used as a new, cloned image of my previous system? So I did an experiment. I split my Disk Image DMG into 6 pieces, then restored it using Pif Spitter. I then used Apple Disk Utility to Restore this reconstructed DMG onto an external HD. I was then able to boot up, and use, this Cloned Copy of my original HD (which was now residing on the external HD). If Pif Splitter works on something like this (and I've also tested it on WMV files and DV files) it should work on anything, and is the perfect solution for using DVD's to lock in a clone of your HD, and then store the DVD's in a secure spot. Spliff Puffer is one great program, and it smokes on Tiger 4.9 [alert admin]

MrClean 1.7 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

The Does (2) Things Very Well

First of all, Mr. Clean Version 1.7 does work with Tiger 4.9. I don't know if it works with 4.10, nor do I care, nor will I be testing it any time soon if you get my drift. This simple utility does more than just locate duplicate files on your HD (and references your external HD as well since Tiger indexes all of your files cross-drive). My biggest gripe with the interface is that the darned report, which doesn't give you an option to "copy-past" in the file menu (you have to manually do this inside the report box) doesn't skip any lines, and all of the files are jumbled together, one color, and the report file paths (for both the original and the copy) are not the most easily things to discern. Other than this annoyance, this program is very useful for FINDING duplicate files, and if you want, you can have Mister Clean automatically delete these files for you if you wish, but I haven't tried this feature, nor will I, because of what I have to say below (read on please). The BEST THING about this program, is, if you REALLY know what a good, organized HD is all about, then you will want to use this program to *help* achieve your IDEAL HD. Have you ever intentionally made a copy of a very important file (let's use a Word Doc for this example) just because you 1) wanted a second copy just in case; 2) reference this same document on a continual basis (it contains vital information)? What you may not realize, is that now you have 2 copies, and if you ever go back and update the one file, you either 1) forget to go back and update the other so they are still exact; 2) you have to be bothered doing #1. Well, this program PREVENTS you from falling into this trap if you know what you're doing. You use it to: 1) locate the file that you want to keep in a certain spot, then make an alias of it; 2) Place this alias in the spot of the duplicate file, then delete the duplicate file. Now when you update either the alias, or the original, both of the files are updated at once, negating the problem I mentioned above. THEREFORE, IT CAN BE SAID THAT THIS PROGRAM CAN BE USED TO CORRECT VITAL LINKS OF NECESSARY FILES ON YOUR HARD DRIVE. Q.E.D. [alert admin]

LockMeBaby 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Aside From The Silly Name

this software actually is something other than totally useless. I mean, I'm just not sure why anyone would want to lock up vast numbers of files/folders; then you would not be able to move these files around before you then unlock them. Therefore it looks like this program just creates more work for you. In the old days, before mass storage, you used to be able to lock files for the purpose of not deleting them accidentlally. Today of course this is not necessary because backing up is so cheap to do. Anyway, I do find this program useful for the mere reason that it can quickly check a large number of files, and if one is locked the file will be reported to you in red color, making locked files (if any) very easy to spot. This program is very efficient in that manner, being able to make sure that your files are NOT locked, but this is the only reason I can think of to use LockMeBaby (just one more time!) ; ) V [alert admin]

Capture Me 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

1.4.1 is a BREAKTHROUGH Program!

I've been using Capture Me for several years now and have always found it to be useful, fun, and trouble free. This newest version however is over the top! To be able to record video from a selected portion of screen, and then save it as a QT movie, is a welcome addition! As far as I have found, aside from commercial programs ($$$) that screen capture the entire desktop, this is the only program that lets you select an area and then capture it. Audio Hijack makes a nice companion to this program. And yes to be able to capture more than 1 minute would be nice, but I'm not complaining at all! THANK YOU RYAN FOR A GREAT PROGRAM!!! Here's the FIX

There is a known issue with 1.6.0 not installing fully. I had the same issue. MP was not installing the hidden .profiles file. Check out this workaround until the next version comes out: http://trac.macports.org/ticket/14889

STILL can't download mpeg2enc!!!

I figured out how to download it, thanks to a lead from another user in a previous post. Here's how: When you right-click, or control-click the mpeg2enc.intel file from http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/ (it's way down at the bottom, 7 lines from the bottom of the page), choose the "Save Linked File As", and save the file as "mpeg2enc.intel" to the desktop (you are removing the .txt extension). Now it will work. The file must be…

One big flaw...

I'm using Tiger and a PPC. I'm scanning right now, and I'm still typing this so I haven't lost my connection. Not sure what issue you're having, but I highly recommend this program.

Excellent!

I totally agree! Not only that, but when a PC user switches to Mac, and he's exposed to this ***retarded mouse*** that limps instead of runs, it makes OSX appear lame (which is most certainly is NOT). ~ Vito

Aside From The Silly Name

I suppose you could use this program across a public *Network*, to *lock down* necessary files on the Server. But for the average user, I still don't think this is a necessary program to be running.

Mine Is Longer Than Yours!

Oh, and after reading this review, Ryan (the developer) E mailed me and told me how to modify the preference file for this program, so that you can extend the record time of on-screen video to beyond 1 minute. So nobody should have ANY complaints at this point, just go to his website! (how's THAT for traffic Ryan?!) The only problem, and considering this is the first version using video recording, is that the…

Now it’s broken

I agree, it stalls out after 1 song. This version is even more quirky than the previous. I'd stick with the older version until this problem is corrected.
