Blackmagic DeckLink 5.7.1 (Mac OS X)

Say bye bye to your prefs everytime....

I still cannot get used to the fact that upgrading Decklink's drivers erases your FCP-prefs, including any favorites and a bunch of settings more. Without asking! There must be a reason of course to erase FCP's prefs and to have FCP re-profiling for RT-performance, but losing my favorites everytime is annoying. So next time, Decklink, have the installer only erase FCP prefs, and not the user-settings and favorites. And i'd like some sort of warning before i click 'install' [alert admin]

Flip4Mac XDCAM Import/Export Component 2.1 (Mac OS X)

MXF Import is now redundant...

...because you can now download the excellent and free XDCAM Transfer for OS X by Sony. This saves you about 496 dollars! Bye bye MXF Import! get it here: https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/sony-software.aspx?model=PDZKP1 [alert admin]

M-Audio FireWire 410 1.5 (Mac OS X)

not so good.

The 410 is quite good but sadly the drivers and software are not as good. I've spent enough time now with the 410 to dump it...i've had enough. The 410 is critical in its firewire behaviour with other fw-devices. And mine has developed noise on the output bus. It used to work so-so with my 2 x 2,5 G5. Oh and it does not work at all with my new MacPro, even though the 1.7.2 driver is specifically written for Intel-Macs. M-Audio! I'm tired of this pretty box! [alert admin]

Gizmo 1.3.2.132 (Mac OS X)

AM-radio? Duh...

Quickly deleted Gizmo after trying it once and realized again how good Skype's soundquality is. I am not going to listen to AM-radio when using only G5's, quality mikes and very speedy DSL, despite many very savvy features. So, back to Skype (this week 100 million users) But hey, i'm still looking for VOIP that has lower processorload, maybe stereo capabilities but i guess Gizmo is not it. Prove me wrong? [alert admin]

Flip4Mac XDCAM Import/Export Component 2.1 (Mac OS X)

There's more:

Now, after spending like 450 euro's for Flip4Mac MXF import, here's what i DON'T want to read: http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/04/26/xdcam/index.php 'NAB: Sony to bring XDCAM Transfer to Final Cut Pro By Jim Dalrymple Sony and Apple were showing a new application that Sony built specifically for Mac OS X. More specifically, the application will only work with Apple’s Final Cut Pro video editing software. XDCAM Transfer will allow users of Final Cut Pro to download media directly from Sony’s XDCAM HD cameras. Users can begin editing the media as soon as the application starts downloading it from the camera, according to Apple. Sony representatives did not return calls with pricing information or release dates.' So, does this mean that Sony will also bring MXF import to the Mac? And if so, will it be free? In that case i would like to know what the advantages of MXF import product really are. Also, what i forgot on the wishlist: Currently there is no way to convert/import the low-res 'proxy' mxf's used for offline editing. I hope MXF-import 2.0 will also be able to do this. [alert admin]

Macs Cue 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Excellent!

I found Macs Cue by accident. I was looking for this type of app for a long time but all i got was 'Alphabet Soup'. :-( Macs Cue however, is excellent! I hope they keep improving it because it has the right feel to it. Now, if only i found Macs Cue earlier, but i guess this is a hidden gem.... [alert admin]

Flip4Mac XDCAM Import/Export Component 2.1 (Mac OS X)

needs improvements really soon....it's still too expensive

Yes it's good, but MXF import is currently the only app that can perform this trick and at a substantial price i may say. I've converted 20 XDCAM discs with it and it performs almost flawlessly, the quality of the converted quicktime movies is excellent. Then again there isn't much to choose either. MXF has almost no options or adjustments. And MXF import has it's best functionality if you convert from an XDCAM-deck with an ethernet-port. But: there are very few networking-players around, so most of the time i only have the cameramans XDCAM camcorder as player. And these do not have networking, only firewire. Here's the gripe: Firewire doesn't allow you to mount the XDCAM as a device on an OS X-desktop. This only works on Windows PC's. It does however let you access the XDCAM-device as a tape-deck, and then you can do an old-fashioned log and capture, but that's doing things really slow. So, in order to do a speedy and non-linear import, you need a PC and a gigabit network and a Mac to make it work fast. I did try to import MXF from an XDCAM-ethernet equipped Sony-deck directly connected to my Mac, but that's only 100 MBit, so the firewire-workaround is still much faster. What i would like in version 2? The ability to mount the XDCAM disc on the desktop with firewire on the Mac. Without using ethernet or a PC. [alert admin]
