FontDoc 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)

Nice

Works well, does what it says. Fast and light on the system. (And of course you can't beat the price : ) ) A request (for SOMEONE): is it possible to write an application just like this, but in which one could view a database of fonts -- whether or not they are installed?? That person will be rich. Do it! [alert admin]

Font Pilot 2.1.3 (Mac OS X)

So disappointed

Nice idea -- EXACTLY what I'm looking for. But, like most everyone else, I've had no luck viewing any fonts other than those already installed. (And, if I want to do that, there are a number of better options -- including "Font Sampler," "You Control Fonts," "FontCard," etc. etc. This one was a waste of time, unfortunately. I can't even seem to narrow it down to a type -- e.g., True Type works, Post Script doesn't, Open Type works, Bitmap or Dfont doesn't, etc. It simply doesn't work. Ah well. Thanks for the effort. p.s.: I WILL DEFINITELY pay for a product that does what I was expecting this one to do. [alert admin]

X Font Info 1.1b1 (Mac OS X)

Functional, but obsolete at best

Found "X Font Info" while searching for a program in which I can view uninstalled fonts -- without bringing my system to a screeching halt on log-in, as with Suitcase. Technically, this program lets you do that -- but only in the same sense as Apple Font Book lets you do it. You open a font, look at it, decide whether to install it. Thanks, but I'll just use Font Book for that. I was hoping for something LIKE Suitcase (or Linotype "Font Explorer" -- also good), that lets me easily view all the fonts I have (without installing them) but that I could run only when I need to -- and keep the VAST majority of my fonts un-installed. Oh well. It appears to be old (2002) and is probably no longer even supported, in any case. [alert admin]

Fission 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Not too shabby.

No plug-ins, as far as I can tell. (That is, you can't apply VST or Audio Unit effects -- which is a MAJOR drawback.)

That said, after using this program for TWO minutes I was considering buying it. Why? Because 1.) you can fast-forward and rewind (seems absurd, but most programs don't have this), 2.) the "Preview Beginning" and "Preview End" features are GREAT -- especially if you're making loops, and 3.) it's from ROGUE AMOEBA! They rule, and they've never let me down before. : )

Also, you can preview the sound as you drag (as with "Peak"), which is neat.

But is it really worth $30?...

I don't think so.

Even the fast-forward and rewind isn't that stellar. (It's slow, non-adjustable, and choppy as hell -- I'd much prefer something like that in QuickTime Player 7.)

As far as editting mp3 files directly, if you just install a LAME encoder, you can use ANY audio editting app to edit the files (QuickTime will convert them instantly), and then encode them back to mp3 again in a matter of seconds -- it's really quite efficient. Otherwise, MP3Trimmer is probably just as good.)

I've been looking for the perfect sound-wave-editting app for some time, to no avail. But I would recommend "Cacophony" (same price as "Fission" -- it doesn't yet support VST effects or Audio Units, but does at least have its own built-in effects, which are quite useful; and the devloper is a good chap.

Or, if you can afford it, buy "Sound Studio" from FreeVerse software. (Trust me -- their logo is cheesy as hell, but this is a SOLID program. I plan to buy it very soon.)

Having said that...

I do like Fission. If they keep developing it, I could easily see it being indispensible. But it's got a ways to go......

So, if you're listening, ROGUE AMOEBA: keep it up!

MaxiMice 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Useless

On Tiger, does absolutely nothing for me. More frustrating is that I can't seem to even delete the bloody thing (no Uninstaller is provided, and even after deleting every file associated with the program it simply WILL NOT GO AWAY!). I regret having even downloaded it. [alert admin]

ScrollNavigator 2.0.4 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

I'd pay $10 for this

Works exactly as promised -- right-click still works perfectly, but if you hold down the right button for just a split second you can scroll with ease. Very, very, handy. (I had an Apple iBook, on which you could scroll effortlessly by simply using two fingers instead of one on the track pad. Now using a Sony Vaio -- which is nice but doesn't have a scroll pad at all, so this app is extremely useful. If there's something similar that makes the 'two finger trick' work, I might go with that instead; but for now I'm pleased.) [alert admin]

Shiira 2.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Gorgeous

I am so glad the developers haven't dropped this project. I used an earlier version, which was stable and solid and FAST. This one, a little buggy still (it is a beta, after all), but beautiful-looking (the semi-transparent windows feel like they're straight from a future release of iTunes) and full of features. (I can't believe no one [i.e., Apple] thought of the "Page Dock" idea first -- it's brilliant.) I'm one of those people still looking for the perfect browser -- they all seem to have their little annoying quirks (and I've tried a lot of them). But I have a feeling Shiira WILL be the one, once the full version is released. [alert admin]

Discontinued

I've been losing parts of my iTunes library -- entire folders just vanishing somehow (anyone else out there had this?? -- if iTunes wasn't so amazing, I would dump it; I need to figure out what's going on . . .) -- and have decided to regularly backup (copy) my library to another hard drive, so thought I would check out You Synchronize, as I'm a big fan of both You Control and You Control Fonts. I've gotten email ads from the company in the past, but never had a real need for the software until now. So, went to the company's web site, and . . . can't seem to find the product anywhere: http://www.yousoftware.com/products/products.php So I click on the "Support" tab, and find this: "You Software no longer distributes or supports this software. The contract with the developer was not renewed this year and we are unable to update or support this software. For more information on future versions of this product, please contact . . ." http://www.yousoftware.com/support/sync_notice.php Just thought I'd point this out -- it's A DEAD APP, don't bother downloading it. Macromedia Flash 8 8.0 (Mac OS X)

More stable but SLOOOOW . . .

It appears that I am the first to review version 8 -- seems very strange (??). But in the few months that I've used it, I am torn between updating or staying with MX 2004. Many of the bugs in the 2004 version have been addressed -- as well listed here : http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20040727005522950 -- and overall version 8 seems far more stable (I rarely ever crash it, whereas with 2004 it would crash constantly, and I was always hitting SAVE in a fit of [warranted] paranoia). I can scroll with the mouse, use the shortcut for copying and pasting frames (VERY nice), zoom in and out and scroll with the hand tool more easily/smoothly (and without crashing), etc. BUT (and this is a huge but) . . . The program overall, and in general, runs so ridiculously slow that I feel like I'm working on a Mac Performa (if you remember those). I'm running a G5 dual 1.8GHz with 3.5GB of RAM, and I can't describe how tedious it is to wait for Flash 8 to respond to each little thing I attempt to do -- very, very frustrating. And, unfortunately -- even though both 2004 and version 8 use the same version of Action Scrip (version 2) -- you cannot open Flash 8 files in Flash MX 2004. So, you kind of have to decide whether to make the leap or not, and then do it (or don't). I should say, though, that you can open MX files in Flash 8, and then save them as 2004-compatible files; problem is, every time you save them in Flash 8 (unless you "Save As . . ." and specify otherwise), they are Flash 8 files and not backwards-compatible. Last remark -- related to MX 2004. In my experience, DO NOT update from 7.0, unless you want to wait several minutes for your files to preview/publish. In 7.0 it's quick, but after the updates (7.1 and/or 7.2), I've found that every time you want a Publish Preview, you wait an eternity . . . (Maybe I'm just too impatient.) [alert admin]

Linotype FontExplorer X 1.0fc4 (Mac OS X)

Better than Suitcase? . . .

I just posted what is, I suppose, a "review" -- but since it's technically a reply to a comment I thought I'd post a rating for this software, because I like it. comments Excellent software. Use it. [alert admin]

Rubbish

Same problem here. I've used Web Dumper in the past, and I seem to remember it working. But this version is very buggy indeed. Yes, if you notice on the left side of the URL field, the "http://" is already there -- so, if you copy and paste a URL you get "http://http://...". Easy enough, one would think -- just select that part of your URL and delete it, right? -- Wrong. …

totally unnecessary; just paste one line in shell

Sorry, I agree with the other posters here -- you're missing the point of why someone made this script; it's because most Mac users never use the Terminal (thankfully we don't have to), and we would have no clue that we should type in that particluar command. As far as making your own script, EVEN IF I already knew how to do it (as you obviously do, and thanks for sharing), I wouldn't do it. …

Use this instead of Suitcase

While I haven't yet tried the newest version of Suitcase ("Suitcase Fusion"), from what I've seen thus far I'd have to say that FontExplorer gives Suitcase a very strong run for its money. For right now I'd recommend using FontExplorer instead -- not only is it free (in Beta), but it's fast, hassle-free and straight-forward yet does everything you need it to. Saves all your fonts in one central location (if you so…
