1Password 3.0.0.BETA-80 (Mac OS X)

The best OS X utility

I cannot imagine life without 1Password on my Mac's & iPhone, the number one utility for me, all my passwords, secure notes, software codes & personal details in one file, in sync across all my devices. The feature set and changes in version are well worth the upgrade cost. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.8.5 (Mac OS X)

Gave up on this and never looked back

I used to be a great supporter of PH but became disenchanted when each new release of Safari would break it and provide a myriad of issues to boot. I ditched PH in favour of the free Safari Adblock (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33567) and have had trouble and ad free browsing ever since. Each Safari update is installed without the wait for the developer to update (the one month wait for the Safari 3 update was the deal breaker), no wasting time going in to packages and hacking to get things running again. Apple Safari 4.0b (Mac OS X)

No problems on either platform

I have installed Safari 4 on multiple Macs and PCs (both XP & Vista), I have had no issues on either platform, the install went smoothly and the speed boost has been phenomenal. I have been able to load sites on Safari 4 that previously only worked correctly in IE on XP. The fact that I can now access these sites on the Mac is a godsend. Top sites - a nice touch and usuable, Cover flow - eye candy, Tabs on the top - horrendous, it looks unsightly and is not at all intuitive. But the speed, that alone is the dealmaker. 1Password is working (with a minor painless tweak) as is Safari adblock so I am happy. Highly recommended, as with any update, make sure your Time Machine backup is up to date and any potential issue is pretty much a non event. [alert admin]

MPlayer OSX Extended rev8 (Mac OS X)

Very impressive

This player now has a great looking OSX GUI and I agree with a previous poster, it seems to handle files more smoothly than VLC. I will keep using it over VLC for a while. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 4.0 Build 3540 (Mac OS X)

Buggy

I have used Parallels since v1, I have found version 3 to be very stable and serve my needs. With all the "benefits" listed for v4 I thought I'd try it out - installed on my MacBook, the upgrade on my XP virtual drive took forever but eventually got there. It hosed my Vista Boot Camp partition. Tried to install on my Mac Pro, installation went smoothly but v4 would not launch. I tried numerous methods including a completely clean install and still nothing. Downgraded to v3, works like a charm. I've lost an entire day fixing the mess v4 made, I'll stick with v3. Safari AdBlock 0.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant

One thing Firefox always had over Safari was the excellent AdBlock. I am so pleased this is available for Safari, no more Pith Helmet and waiting excruciating weeks for an update every time Safari is updated. This works incredibly well. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.8.3a (Mac OS X)

Better solution

Like many others I have been waiting for word on an update to Pith Helmet. I gave Glimmerblocker a try but as a Little Snitch user Glimmerblocker made life hell. My prayers have been answered in the discovery of AdBlock for Safari - works incredibly well, as good as the Firefox version. And now I couldn't care less whether Pith Helmet is updated or not. I have a working FREE solution that won't break every time an update is released. [alert admin]

DiscLabel 5.3 (Mac OS X)

Excellent support

I agree with Craigmramsay, I used a free earlier version of this software given with a labelmaker for many years, when they discontinued their product I went searching for alternatives and settled on the current version of Disclabel. Living in Australia, the page sizes are different to the US, I sent the sizing details for a widely available label to support, they sent me back a template within 24hrs. That is great customer service and without hesitation I recommend this product - by far and away the best label making software on the Mac. [alert admin]

Things 0.9.6 (Mac OS X)

Buggy

I agree with a previous reviewers comment on the iPhone component, I have been waiting patiently for Apple to fix a huge omission in not having an iPhone to do list sync with iCal - as one who relies on his to do list I paid for Things on my iPhone and downloaded the desktop version excited at the prospect of finally having a to do list that syncs with my desktop rather than a web based offering. One major bug in the software has driven me crazy, if you quit and relaunch the desktop app or when the system date changes around 35 or so rescheduled tasks will appear back in the Today list showing as due or overdue by how many days since creation. If you reschedule them they will reappear once one of the aforementioned scenarios occurs. I start each day rescheduling the same tasks and if I fail to sync the iPhone first I have to repeat the reschedule. It is an insane scenario for a task manager that has sent me searching for an alternative. An email to support has gone unacknowledged and certainly makes me extremely hesitant to fork out another $40 ($60 in my currency, likely more by January given the current state of affairs). Would I recommend Things as it stands right now? No. [alert admin]

iBank 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Still too many shortcomings

I've tried really hard to like this app but I continually found frustration in using even the most basic functions, so annoying in fact that I've given up and am going back to Quicken. I might add that this is my 2nd attempt to migrate to iBank so I've given it a serious go. The app looks great and the iPhone functionality is fantastic, in fact it was the driving factor in me giving the software another go, but the assorted bugs, flaky widget, forced mouse input, horrible reconciliation method and lack of the ability to do even some basic functions make it's use too much of a compromise for my needs. At version 3 I would expect better. I hope that it improves & will take another look at v4 or 5. [alert admin]

An alternative - works well

I'm a long time Pith user that has installed Glimmerblocker and am very pleased with the result so far - albeit with some minor frustration in the intital setup due to Little Snitch throwing up a warning for every site, but that is not GB's fault and will pass. Who knows, at this stage by the time the developer updates Pith Helmet, and we know how long that can take, I will probably not even bother…

Given up

The reschedule bug has proven to be the deal breaker for me. After resisting web based Task managers I have given the free Toodledo service a try - the iPhone app functionality runs rings around Things, and at half the price. There is a Dashboard widget that gives quick access from my multiple Macs and I won't have to fork out money for a desktop app.

Very slow!

Each to their own I guess. Azureus may be relatively quick but it is one of the most horrendous resource hogs I have encountered. Give me the lightweight, uncomplicated, Mac like Transmission over Azureus any day.

Useless until you add spices.

You need to act your age then and set the example for the younger generations - not carry on like a childish teenager. Using age as an excuse for your vulgarity - which in itself is being dished out because you can't factually respond to your statements being dismissed as emotionally charged inaccuracies - is a cop out. I'm sure you'll respond with some more venomous claptrap, it's pointless as I won't be here to read…

Reality check

The original poster may have some valid comments about GarageBuy but his whole post is invalidated by his statements on Leopard which are clearly emotional based on his personal experience and have no basis in statistical fact at all. In fact media reports in recent days say quite the opposite. As for the abusive response he dished out to another poster, it indicates he is aged 12 or 13.

has Pith Helmet been updated for the Safari in Leopard?

Pith Helmet does not work with Safari in Leopard. Back to Firefox for me until it is updated.

Still missing basic Mac look and feel

System 9 wasn't ugly in it's day, but the default form elements in Firefox are in the clunky, ugly Windows style and they look totally out of place in Mac OS X - just as the OS9 look does. I prefer consistency in my UI and we get enough inconsistency from Apple (aqua, metal, shaded, unified toolbar, non unified toolbar). The above mentioned Aqua widgets in combination with Uno bring consistency to the entire UI,…

I'm not convinced of the leak

Safari does indeed leak RAM. I have about 8 sites that I leave open in tabs as I check them several times daily. After several days Safari will have used 500-600MB of RAM and has gone up to 900MB a couple of times. I have run exactly the same condition using both Firefox & Camino - both only use 110MB (the same as Safari starts on) and stay at that level - at one stage up…
