Wikipedia 0.9.1 (Mac OS X)

If you use dashboard...

You will be surprised and delighted at how often wikipedia is just plain better than Google if you need to know something "right now". This is the widget that got me to start using Dashboard in my day to day workflow. [alert admin]

FStream 1.2.7 (Mac OS X)

Dynamite

Fantastic improvements in the latest version. Running rock solid now. I can now enjoy seamless, no-hassle streamed content at home on broadband or on the road when my macbook pro is connected via blue-tooth to my mobile telephone. I believe that streaming content is the next mp3. There is amazing content out there and FStream is one of the few applications that give you the flexibility to accommodate just about any Internet connection with a no-nonsense, lightweight approach to getting the job done. Now that the core is stable and reliable, I would love to see subtle improvements to the interface. It would be great if you can make your application “skinnable”. Either way, I would be happy to contribute. I have experience in GUI design and would be pleased to get involved at any level. Regards, Bryan [alert admin]

FStream 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Interesting

This app looked like the perfect application for my needs. I was just looking for a small footprint, lightweight no-nonsense stream player and FStream came up in my search. Bingo. I love the lightweight GUI and the basic concept of quick and easy access to a few stream bookmarks. Perfect. Too bad this application pegs one CPU on my macbook pro to 100% and keeps it there the whole time. iTunes, in contrast never takes more than 14% when streaming the same source. Importantly, FStream only reequired 4.2% CPU when streaming a standard internet radio site, so I believe this is only an issue for users wanting to stream from a nicecast server. Otherwise, this software magnificent! Would like to request the developer to provide a little more click surface to the menu button. It's pretty small and should probably be side-by-side with the volume button. [alert admin]

Mobile High Speed 3G 4.27a (Mac OS X)

Tough Call

Think going mobile with your Mac is a bit too complex? Ever spent time messing around with tech support from your mobile service provider (some call center guy in Manilla who has only seen advertisements for an apple computer) and telling you about modem strings and other unnecessary configuration info? Dudes and dudettes - If you are willing to pay, you run this software and things just work. If you travel internationally and want to have access to the Internet from abroad... This is the software. My grandpa now roams with the convenience of 3g high speed internet access. He still hasn't figured out that when it doesn't work, it's because he left his phone back in the car (seriously). Things work so flawlessly, you might not even notice there is a phone involved. Caviat with Novamedia software - Nice people but mean and nasty pricing and licensing. I still haven't bought a license for either of my macbook pro's because I have already paid for three licenses, and not really sure that I'm prepaired to keep spending at this rate. For now, I'm going to keep dealing with the hassle of manual configuration... Not sure how it is today, but in the past, each license was tied to a specific machine. Most travelers go through machines a bit too fast to justify paying hundreds of dollars (or euros) for utilitiy software. Request: please change license to user ID's and not machine ID's or significantly lower the price - I would say at 19 euros I could afford to put it on all of my laptops. [alert admin]

Chicken of the VNC 2.0b4 (Mac OS X)

Good.

There are several good VNC clients out there, but some will value CotVNC for it's particularly stable and robust set of functions. I was impressed to see it doing the "bonjour-thing" so well. My other Macs running OSXVNC showed up automatically and were accessable via double click with zero configuration. nice. Wish: mouse scrolling in the local VNC window though... nice if you could switch mouse scrolling to local control via modifier-mouse-scroll combination. [alert admin]

SideTrack 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

awesome

this is an incredible product. If you have an older powerbook, it is simply unbelievable what happens to your laptop's overall usability. additional wish: please create a stand alone product that only adds the tap-to-right-click functionality to the newer trackpads. Is there a technical way to achieve this withought having to mess with the hardware driver? [alert admin]

Parallels Workstation 2.1b (Mac OS X)

Wow.

This is amazing. I'm using a MacBook Pro and windows XP is booting up in about 8-9 seconds. It is by far faster to shut down the virtual machine and reboot than use the suspend/restore option. Amazing. I can start MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Explorer, Project and Visio ready-and-loaded including all the mouse clicks in less than 5 seconds. I have never, ever used a PC with anything approaching this kind of blazing performance. Amazing. Alas, it's beta software and as with most beta software, it has some severe limitations. 1. recognizing devices/volumes is a major pain in the but and some less advanced users may never get past this hurdle 2. Host and guest OS cannot at present easily to share compatible (FAT32) volumes. This means you have to get the network stuff sorted out to FTP or SMB/mount a volume in order to exchange data between the two worlds. 3. Bugs: I despise the fact that when I slap the lid closed on my MacBook expecting it to sleep, Parallels kills OSX 10.4.6 instantly and completely. Not cool. 4. Will be nice to get all those little things like sound drivers, usb device suppot etc... Many thanks Gents at Parallels for the most exciting breakthrough on the Mac/Win problem in years! If you invest in ironing out the bugs and add the key features that appear to already be on your roadmap... WOW! [alert admin]

SideTrack 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Great software... close to perfection

Love this product on my old powerbooks, but for my 2005 powerbook, I just want to add "tap for right click" and otherwise, leave the trackpad as is. When that has been implmented, SideTrack will once again make my list of essential utilities for the Mac. [alert admin]
