FontAgent Pro 4.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I think this is the first time that FAP gave the user the choice to selectively install auto-activation plug-ins for Adobe Creative Suite (all versions), as well as QuarkXpress, the first time you run it. Not sure if it will persist with the dialog if you choose not to install the first time. Very convenient. I am gratified that even before this update, they made plug-ins available for Adobe CS4, and this updated version is now even quicker with auto-activation in InDesign. Illustrator is still slow to react, but there is no more need to close and reopen the document. I own and have used ALL of the other font management programs out there, and still maintain my licenses, but FAP is definitely my first choice for managing my 7,000+ font library. The only problem discovered so far is that the update deleted all the names of my font sets. Fortunately, the contents seem to have been unaffected. My long-time gripe remains. When running Font Player, you cannot pause it. Whenever you stop/pause, it will have to start from the very beginning (or very end) of the set. [alert admin]

BurnX Free 1.5 (Mac OS X)
This is my favorite utility for burning data discs, but after upgrading to Leopard (10.5.1) it now cannot find the stock optical drive in my Mac Pro. It will be sorely missed! [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0b (Mac OS X)
For those reporting problems with this, please indicate your OS version as well as your hardware configuration, for the sake of others who may be hesitating to install this. On my Mac Pro, Mac OS X 10.4.9, 5 GB RAM, Radeon X1900 to dual 30" Cinema Displays, this version of Safari installed without a hitch and runs so amazingly better and faster than version 2. Being able to reorder the tabs by simply dragging them across is such a welcome feature. [alert admin]

QuarkXPress 7.1 (Mac OS X)
Printing to film (imagesetter) still has the same issues as 7.0.2. You cannot rotate the page (transverse), and color separations will still output blank pages for all process colors even if those colors are not present. The same files output correctly (rotation and blank color plate suppression) in version 6.5.2. I don't want to badmouth Quark (as most other users do), but this situation is becoming untenable. Toast Titanium 8.0 (Mac OS X)
6 of one and half a dozen of the other...
Let me get this straight... The main page offers Toast 8 for $99.99/$79.99 after mail-in rebate. Then they have a link to the Upgrade Center for current Toast owners. The price is $99.99/$79.99 after upgrade mail-in rebate! What a deal! [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
After using pre-version 2 with movie capture capability, it's disappointing to have to pay for version 2 for this feature. I decided to install this thing again after upgrading to a Mac Pro. Now I remember why I had not used it for a long time. If you decide to uninstall using the program they provide, it will wipe out all your login items. I wonder what else it screwed up? [alert admin]

Cee Pee You 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)
I had been using this on my dual G5 previously and is a great early-warning tool for showing signs of runaway apps or processes. It works just as well on my 3 GHz Mac Pro except that it still shows two numbers. Any chance of a future update to show CPU load on all four cores? [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.2.1 (Mac OS X)
On both my PowerMac G5 and iMac Core Duo, both running Mac OS X 10.4.8 and VTPro 4.2.1, the main window shows nothing. I can initiate a scan by clicking on Check For Updates but the list remains blank... on both machines. Just today, I looked up Acrobat Professional on versiontracker.com and the page indicated that it is not installed on any of my machines monitored by etc. Not true. I have Acrobat Pro 7 on my iMac and versions 7 and 8 on my G5. VTPro is not getting any better at all. [alert admin]

QuarkXPress 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Faster and more stable, but... ![]()

When 7.0.1 came out it simply would not install onto my G5. I assumed that the update was solely for the intel Macs. With 7.0.2, 7.0.1 was required. So I tried installing the latter once more and it worked this time. Suffice it to say that I can only compare 7.0.2 with 7.0 since I have no experience at all with 7.0.1.
The good news. As far as I can tell all the functions are markedly faster with this version, especially printing. FontAgent Pro auto-activation also works flawlessly. Files (usually heavy on pictures as well as fonts) on my Tiger Server (afp) read and write error-free over gigabit ethernet.
The bad news. Printing color separations always generates all four process plates, even pages with no images on them. These are not stray or ghost information because when printed from version 6.52, the blank pages do not get printed.
The book feature is still crude, at best. It can't even export groups of chapters or the whole book to a single PDF file. If you have 50 chapters, you end up with 50 PDF files.
There are no new features added in this update as far as I can tell.
It is at least encouraging to see that Quark are trying hard to get back into the graces of their users. The Universal Binary format is a clear indication of this, unlike the other guys... Mac users are fast becoming second-rate citizens to them, I suppose.
I just wish the QuarkXPress detractors and bashers out there would abstain from posting reviews if they don't have legitimate points to support their ratings. [alert admin]

MainMenu 1.5.5 (Mac OS X)
Elegantly simple. I recommend this utility to everyone, especially my clients who I regularly have to talk through troubleshooting procedures over the phone, whether it involves permission repair, launch services db rebuild, etc. I would still use and recommend it even if it were not free. That is why this is badly missed right now, after the 10.4.8 update. We hope an update is forthcoming. It is good that it disables itself with the system update. I have had unfortunate experiences with system utilities still working after an OS update, only to learn that they don't work right thereby damaging system files. [alert admin]

I don't mind paying for this software at all. It's ironic that of all the maintenance utilities I tried on my iMac Core Duo, now running 10.4.5, this is the only one that works. Xupport, paid, quits constantly. Cocktail regularly comes back with Applescript errors as well as hanging up on repair permissions. By all means, I'll pay for this. I'm even willing to test your beta versions. (My intel iMac is not my main workstation,…

No thanks. I found alternative utilities to do my snapshots. The only feature that's hard to replace is movie capture, but that's quite messy anyway. Cool idea, tried it a few times but never found real use for it.
