Perian 1.1.4 (Mac OS X)
Perian should just about be packaged with Quicktime its that necessary ![]()

I'm running it 1.1.4 on my G5 PPC and my Intel Macbook, both running 10.5.8, without any problems at all. I use video daily, editing it, watching it, and converting it, and have never had a problem with Perian. I couldn't do most of the things do very easily or quickly without Perian. I would say it primarily gets its biggest work out with the Nice Player, my preferred player because its slick and has a play list ;) If you're running Snowleopard and experiencing issues, head over to the Perian forum http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewforum.php?f=25 and see what people are talking about and what the discussion is... the developers and people who know their video stuff often contribute to the discussions so the forum is very valuable. CopyPath 1.1.0 (Mac OS X)
Is brilliant! I had to deviate a bit from the author's READ ME to get it going but it's spiffy ![]()

It's a no brainer - does what it supposed to and does it right - accurately copies to the clipboard the Apple file path of whatever file or folder or disk you've selected. I'm running 10.5.8 so maybe this explains my issue, perhaps 10.6 is different: The author says to install in Applications, restart, then open System Prefs>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcut>Service and select CopyPath there. However, there was no Service input or selection listed on my Keyboard Shortcut window. So since the implication from his READ ME is that this is actually a Service, I just dropped the app into /Library/Services , restarted, and it showed up on the Finder' Services menu and that's fine by me... didn't necessarily need a right click context menu... Overall 4 stars - since the documentation was somewhat problematic and also didn't mention the option of just having it show up on the Services menu without right click functionality. [alert admin]

OnyX 2.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Spotlight parameters need further explanation
first off, let me just say that like so many others, this utility is invaluable. I've used it for years and will continue using it. Recently though I found using a particular function produced a result that I didn't expect based on the description of the function. Let me say that more explicitly: I don't know if I misunderstood what result the function would produce or if Onyx is not clear in responsibly identifying what result the function would produce. Under the Parameters tab, there is a subtab for Spotlight, where you are presented with the option of showing or hiding the Spotlight icon; upon consulting Help, it confirms my thoughts that icon being referred to is the omnipresent Spotlight menu bar icon, and further elaborates that indexing will not be affected, etc. My menu bar has become disgustingly cluttered and since Spotlight can be invoked from a hotkey combo, I figured I'd get rid of the menu bar icon and in Onyx chose the option to "Hide." Spotlight however stops working entirely. As soon as I hit "Hide" I quit Onyx and tried to invoke Spotlight through it's enabled hotkey combo. Didn't work. I opened Activity Monitor and Spotlight wasn't running. So back to Onyx, chose "Show" for Spotlight icon, and Activity Monitor shows it running. Click "Hide" again, and it quits. So I go and look at the Core services folder /System/Library/CoreServices and the Spotlight app has got the big "no access" folder icon so I check its permissions and it's marked "Everyone: No Access." Back to Onyx, click "Show," and Spotlight is back in Activity Monitor, back in the Menu bar, the "no access" folder icon disappears, and it's permissions are set back as they should be with System having R/W access. If you don't need your computer indexed for easy access to find things, this isn't problematic. But if you're like me and you rely on Spotlight to stay organized, use this function with caution. NeoOffice 3.0 Patch 5 (Mac OS X)
Intel NeoOffice 3.0 thumbs up vs. OOo 3.1 ![]()

I've always been wary of NeoOffice on a purely emotional level - lots of bad vibes re: their splinter from OOo but push has come to shove now and it's bad news for OOo. 3.0-3.1 was their big splash Mac native version, but it doesn't behave well for me... when dealing with even the smallest of graphics in documents (tracers when moving an image, a delay in image rendering from the time you release the mouse button until the image appears in its new position, makes precision difficult). It opens slower than NeoOffice. I get too many beach balls (even if OOo is the only app open and the first one loaded right after start up, so not a memory or CPU issue on my computer). NeoOffice doesn't have any of those issues. Yeah document format exchangeability is still buggy, in both Neo and OOo, but that's actually now Microsoft's fault - they (seemingly) purposely withheld the appropriate specifications to allow interoperability seamlessly after agreeing to a standard to use, using the excuse that the standard everyone agreed to was not well defined. But M$ only brought that up AFTER the fact when it was too late to fix, when they supposedly knew about it during development. [alert admin]

OpenOffice.org 3.1.0 (Mac OS X)
Disappointed w/ Intel, but PPC 3.1 release candidate is super ![]()

3.1.0 OOo on my Intel Macbook is a bust. I've mentioned before the bad vibes I get from NeoOffice but push has now come to shove and NeoOffice outperforms OOo. It launches a little faster, it's more responsive... my biggest issue is that working with graphics in OOo is an exercise in frustration. Try to drag and drop anything and there are tracers as well as delay from the time you release mouse button to the time image actually renders in its new place on the screen making precise manipulation of image position difficult (which sounds indicative of a being maxed out on your RAM or your CPU, but I tested that theory out and it happens even if OOo is the only app running and I launch it right after I boot.) NeoOffice performs the same operations smoothly and accurately. I get too many spinning beach balls with OOo. However, on my G5 Mac I've been running the OOo 3.1,0 release candidate no. 2, available here http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.1.0rc2_20090424/ in many different languages, and it's actually quicker in many ways than the Intel version. I don't have any problems with handling graphics. It launches faster. For a release candidate, it seems pretty stable to me. I haven't had any problems with it. There are more current dev versions available for PPC as well but I can't speak to their quality as I tend to steer clear of anything in development for my document creation needs; release candidates have always served me well in the past which is why I feel comfortable using them. http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/ [alert admin]

sharedSecrets 1.1.0 (Mac OS X)
Uh-oh... a year later and I just notice there's no export function
I still love sharedSecrets and its functioned flawlessly during the time I've used it.while only taking up the tiniest amount of RAM on my under-memoried MacBook. But blinded by all it's strengths in relation to my machines, I failed to notice something crucial.... But as the release of SnowLeopard draws near and along with it the end of support for PPC's, I began wondering what I was going to do with regards to keeping an identical application set on my Intel Macbook and my PPC Mac... which suddenly made me realize sharedSecrets has NO export function! once your secrets are in there, that's it. at least as far as the documentation indicates. I sent a note off to the developer - hopefully they have some time to either work out a patch or they've got a new version coming out that addresses this (it's been a year exactly since the last release) [alert admin]

sharedSecrets 1.1.0 (Mac OS X)
It is everything it's cracked up to be! Except I know zilch about encryption
I haven't seen any reviews of this piece password/confidential info ultraencrypted database app and I always pause for a second and right away now that no reviews doesn't necessarily means its sucks, if it sucked everyone would be screaming about it. No one complains (or posts sometimes) when things work right. And from a semi-techy's point of view, it meets my needs (this statement obviously embraces wholeheartedly that I trust that the product meets the technical specifications for encryption that it advertises. I personally have no clue and wouldn't even know how to test it, save for trying to open the data file with other apps. But all that aside, for freeware at v. 1.1.0 I find it to be the most stable, the most organized (there is only screen, a tree with branches) although entries "secrets" as they call them be sorted alphabetically would be great. right now, they are just listed as you input them., it has one of the lowest memory footprints (9-10mb) than some other free/sharewares i looked at (I have 1 gig G5 and 1 gig MacBook year old), not to mention it has never misbehaved, at least that I've seen. Its worked flawlessly. Downside but also upside: there is no sync between machines, but the data file is portable and usable anywhere with password so a little file share over airport and you're set. Visually, I think they went overboard - they seemed to have wanted the app, which again I am assuming is very strong, to mimic the dramatic opening and closing of a bankvault, trying to instill that same trust in their product. That part is fine . But it seems to result in a huge real estate stealer on the desktop. The font sizes are awfully larger on some inputs. But these downsides are just minor things relative to this app's freeware status and what it i s able to do. [alert admin]

iFreeMem 2.0 (Mac OS X)
This program, while it works great, installed framework for "esellerate" in both my home library and my system library. If you delete it, it just regenerates the next time you open the program. So I control-clicked on the program icon and choose "package contents" and went in and deleted everything associated with esellerate. The program works the same without so who knows what the hell that thing was doing to my computer. To the developers of this program: if your program isn't malware, here's a clue: it is NOT cool to have it install crap without the users permission. I don't care if it's in your fine print or not. It is not cool. [alert admin]

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS WONDERFUL UTILITY!
oh that other app is god awful too. sidenote was so attractive already but the killer feature for me is it never goes a sliver above 12 mb ram - at times, i've had 15 notes, all very lengthy, I am always forever dragging .png and .jpgs in for safe keeping... it being hidden is really indicative how exactly how unobtrusive in so many ways. that other app, however, had already eaten 20 mb…

"1.1.4 is terrible" - but in what v. of OS X, on what architecture, do you speak?
It is very frustrating when I update a piece of software that has just sort of melded its way into my every day life and I don't give it a second thought for, say, years... until one day it breaks just out of the blue, or after an upgrade, and all of sudden my smooth every day routine isn't so smooth and frankly, now that I have a problem to deal with, I usually get…

Yeah, you're very smart to not pony up the $25. You can read all about this company and this product's descent into the marketplace starting here http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18545&mode=feedback and then just keep toggling the version no. of each release until you can read no more of how misleading these people are. I hate to so aggressively relay such negative information about someone or a company, but I truly find their company's business practices heinous,…

so yeah exactly what IS the problem with this FREE app that does what you normally have to shell out money for? people will take any chance they can get to run their mouths under some deep seated need to crush those around them, but only on the internet! the freedom of (relative) anonymity comes with a price I suppose. I have QTPro and I use these apps interchangeably. if I have a file I don't…

Bleeding edge OOo dev versions & rc's here
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/ ala Nakata Maho there's a complete archive of everything. of course it goes without saying: dev builds - use at your own risk (I've not had a problem) and certainly not in a production environment. release candidates - act accordingly. it's coming!

X11 no longer needed in new version of OpenOffice 3.0
thank God - I could never get it to install and run on my G5 PPC, where I do all my heavy duty office busy work, because of the damn X11- it kept gettin stuck in some loop and drove me insane for 2 years. (Let me just say before continuing, this is NOT AT ALL a bag on OOo... oh I have much love for OOo, I actually worked very closely with a dev…
