VirtualLab Data Recovery 3.9.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

not so great

1) it's listed as "shareware", but "hijackware" might be more appropriate, since you have to pay for each and every gig of data that you recover, each and every time. not my idea of "shareware". 2) all data flows via their server. (the "free recovery software" is only the client.) if this bothers you, don't use it. 3) it didn't even see my external firewire device (intel imac in target mode), even though finder, data rescue II, disk warrior, file salvage, all had no problem seeing and working with it. 4) i didn't like the install procedure (standard installer script, but it puts the app in a VERY stupid and not-so-obvious folder), or the sudden spike in internet traffic. and the uninstall (a very unsophisticated terminal shell script) made me extremely nervous. (it seems harmless, but i had to read it in textedit to be sure, because that's exactly how trojans get into your machine.) <b>conclusion: it did nothing for me, on a very simple, "salvage the trashed files", recovery.</b> [alert admin]

MacSpeech Dictate 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

where's the beef?!?!?!

this link doesn't point to any download, just to some useless marketing bumph. (i need to download a standalone updater for another machine that doesn't have a broadband connection, so automatic updating won't work.) why are these developers wrecking the basic concept behind versiontracker? Download Accelerator Plus 2.1.0 (Mac OS X)

put it out of its misery!

a poor port of a windows programme that hasn't been updated since os x 10.2, and an uninstaller that doesn't uninstall. plus, a potential problem where whole whack of prefs files (safari, address book, textedit) got corrupted when running it on 10.4. this is definitely not worth using, let alone paying them a shareware fee! SndSampler 5.9.6 (Mac OS X)

flea-infested nagware

a winner! this is the most annoying nagware i've seen in months. this author is so fond of pop-ups (every 5 or 10 seconds!) that the programme is absolutely useless - i wouldn't waste any money on software that is so obviously designed to annoy the living daylights out of me [alert admin]

Olympus DSS Player 1.4.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

V 1.4.4 available

a version 1.4.4 update (dated june 05) is available for download at olympus' site (although it is referred to as 1.4.3), as well as an update from 1.x.x to 6.02 (which is called 6) dated feb 05, and an updater to 6.0.4 dated july 05. adding to the confusion, the recorder is listed as DS-2200, even though the current model is the DS-2300. and none of these updates are listed on versiontracker. i just hope the software is less confused. FileSalvage 4.1.1 (Mac OS X)

don't waste your time with trial version!

it isn't spelled out clearly enough - the trial (unregistered, unpaid-for) version will not recover files; it will spin its wheels for a very long time (like a couple of hours for a 20gb drive), just to show you a list of the possible files, but you can't recover anything until you've paid for it (fair enough), and then you get to waste a few more hours. i wish they had made that clear BEFORE i wasted my time! and the programme does install some files on your system without telling you anything about what and where they are. the good news is that the programme contains an "uninstall" feature - the bad news is that the programme has to be running to use it AND you have to trust the programmer. Temperature Monitor 2.5 (Mac OS X)

kidding?

i'm looking for a programme to display the temperature of my cpu (dual 533mhz g4). "temperature monitor 2.5" is listed as "freeware" and it's supposed to display cpu temperature, NOT hard disk temperature. but all i can find are the 2 seagate smartdisk temperatures, and a "plug" for a commercial version called "hardware monitor" that promises tol monitor all sensors. WHERE'S THE FREEWARE CPU TEMPERATURE DISPLAY?!!!!!! [alert admin]

don't waste your time with trial version!

wrong headed thinking! once i'm done sitting around waiting for a few hours, and i can see the list of my files, i want to be able to pay the shareware fee, without losing that list, and recover the files.

what i DON'T want is to sit through that long wait TWICE! i cannot ethically bill my customers twice for my time, so i lose hours of billable time. and you don't really…
