Isolator 4.0 (Mac OS X)
So far so good - haven't seen any of the bugs users of earlier versions mention. Useful and clever, definitely a keeper! [alert admin]

RGB MusicLab 20 (Mac OS X)
It's cool as heck, that's what it is. I just found my new favorite way to waste time. [alert admin]

And that's truly about all it's good for, but that's fine. I guess I would rather see the options in a preferences pane than on the main screen, but that's my only quibble. Good stuff! [alert admin]

Adium X 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Despite their claims to the contrary, grouping contacts (esp. if you have >1 AIM account, as I do) has not worked since about beta 4. I'm stuck in beta 3 which has problems of its own but at least contacts stay where they're supposed to. Anyone who can prove me wrong on this is more than welcome to. [alert admin]

Get Parallels for $60 through Dec 22 by following this link: http://www.parallels.com/announcement/desktop/4/ (Not affiliated and already an owner, just thought I'd pass this along.) Coherence mode and the Boot Camp bridge make for an amazing update. Faster too. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)
No complaints, seems to load faster. Also, as noted on Macfixit, Cmd+Opt+1 now opens the iTunes window. Thank goodness for keyboard shortcuts. [alert admin]

Camouflage 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Showing/hiding icons changes the aspect of the background wallpaper on my system from "Fill screen" to "Stretch to fill screen". When icons are hidden, app doesn't allow ctrl+click on the desktop. Others' mileage may vary. [alert admin]

Does exactly what it needs to do and nothing more. And it's free. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 2.2.1898.0 (Mac OS X)
Major problems on a MacBook, 2GB RAM 2GHz. When switching from windowed to full screen mode, Parallels did it's animation routine TWICE. Tried to switch back to windowed mode, Paralells died. Its icon continues to show in the Dock even though it was "force removed" (it doesn't show up in Activity Monitor). Rebooted the comp, same thing. Updated from 1884... hopefully it will let me downgrade. [alert admin]

Don't hold your breath on this one. Seriously. A PPC version would require a processor emulation layer.

- This is the first release I've had deadly problems with. Luckily it was easy enough to uninstall then return to the previous beta. ~t

Probably the biggest difference between (open source) LAME and the (licensed) Frauenhofer (sp?) encoder is that Frauenhofer cuts all frequencies above 16KHz which they claim is a fair tradeoff between file size, speed of encoding and psychoacoustics (FM radio, except for a 19KHz pilot signal, doesn't transmit >16KHz). LAME gives you the whole 20Hz-20KHz bandwidth if you request it, and this is where people notice the difference.

What features exactly are you talking about? The Mac version seems to have more cool features than the Windows version, including scriptability, logging, more extensive alerts and the ability to see what service a buddy is using directly from the list. Some of these are available as third-party add-ins. One of the few things I can think of that the Windows version has is themes which I don't care about anyway.

while the iPod is plugged in and updating, a progress bar fills up on the iPod itself. after that the apple appears. i believe that's when you unplug it, and I think a message displays in the updater (on the Mac) telling you to do so. I think i had to reset it once (which in itself is weird on the new iPods) but after that I plugged it back in and it was recognized,…

The install is weird and fussy, I'll admit. Basically, run the package installer WITHOUT having the iPod plugged in. After package installer has run, plug the iPod in and follow the instructions. At one point you have to unplug the iPod to finish the install, and that should do it. I did have to reset the iPod once during the process, but the install did complete without having to resort to a restore. Sorry to…
