MacPhoneHome 3.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Consider others that free or much cheaper
Essentially all these applications do is email the IP information when the Mac is booted and connected to the Internet. This requires the user to leave the login set to auto-login or the app cannot load and send it's email. Of course this always assumes the thief is ignorant and does not have the common sense or capacity to wipe the hard drive before they hawk it. Then, let's assume most thieves are ignorant or they would get a more lucrative, less anxiety ridden job. So you get a mailing address of some ISP's subscriber, which i think would require a court order, in Detroit. You then: A. drive over there and ask for your laptop back B. Call the Detroit police and ask them to kindly get your laptop back which they will probably find amusing over their donuts or C. Pray to the gods to smote 65431 Heratio Avenue Detroit Bwanadik is free, has nice little network connection indicator if you dont want to be so stealthy and is quite reliable. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25238 The inadequately named IP - 5.5 by AstroK is $5 and has the bonus of FTP if you prefer. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18384 I need to add the reservation that the MacPhoneHome's company says they will help you track it down, i would presume by contacting the company of the originating IP, but my experience has been that these companies shortly disappear. My bad experiences came from both TracYourMac and TypeRecorder for example. Then your rather steep $30 disappears with them, as well as the website they phone to if that is one of their strategies. I do not claim to know much about the product, i am only commenting on their price and marketing strategy. I am certainly eager to be better educated anyone who has ever recovered a stolen laptop this way would care to respond. [alert admin]

Audio Hijack Pro 2.8 (Mac OS X)
I had some problems with the version change. Some interference from other audio related software that other programs had installed in my system, probably. But the Rogue people patiently corresponded until we worked out the issues. Now works fine. Good software. Good people. [alert admin]

Mac Minder 2.5.7 (Mac OS X)
As with most of these parental "monitoring" software, this company died after a few versions. http://forums.macworld.com/thread/96736;jsessionid=1EE6E73C25E72FFED4953E3B664BCCF7?tstart=0 I suspect it is because it is difficult and time consuming software to design, integrate into the operating system and support. They cant charge enough for it. Apple should get serious and create user levels that work and tell parents what they want to know. [alert admin]

Tomato Torrent 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Very small footprint in the OSX. It is perfect to run in the background when you dont want something that sucks CPU time and hogs memory and pages out disk space. Simple, easy, stable. I didnt see any the problems in other reviews. These may be torrent dependent issues. I highly recommend it for limited use. [alert admin]

Tunatic 1.0.1b (Mac OS X)
It does work for some common popular songs but...
Tunalyzer the contributor: I have had it on my laptop and desktop for several months. Monitoring it thru the console, it doesnt seem to do much. I cannot see anyway to force start it. I have many unusual songs from Africa and other places that have been on my computers for a long time, but Tunatic doesnt recognize them. I am assuming that means that Tunalyzer is not contributing them. I submitted a similar question to the website but there was no response. My guess is that this software doesnt work correctly and nobody is supporting it. Am i missing something? [alert admin]

iStar Karaoke 1.5.5 (Mac OS X)
If you click on a .kar file Quicktime plays it with words, two lines at time using midi. If you drop a .kar file on to iStar it plays it with words, two lines at a time using midi. Looks like the back end of $50 iStar is free Quicktime. Maybe it would be good for writing your own, i dont know but if you are looking for a .kar player use Quicktime. [alert admin]

DiskCatalogMaker X 4.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Great software .. but need help
I have used DCM many years happily. But a Toast installed a trigger to open it with an "untitled" catalog. Very annoying. How can i turn this off? > I do have a problem with the Toast version. I may be missing something, > which is why i write this. It seems useless. I cannot find any configuration > in either Toast or it's accompanying DCM. I cannot find any way to configure > it to bring up my regular or a specific catalog file. It creates a new untitled > catalog everytime i burn a disk. I cannot even figure out how to turn it off. > Could find no reference to it in Toast Help. Somebody's good idea badly > implemented perhaps. [alert admin]

Its there. I missed it at first too. You have to choose "Monthly", set both the weeks and the days of the week and if you want different times on different days you must set up more than one.
