Sound Studio 3.6 (Mac OS X)
There is still a bug where an edited and saved .m4a file can (but not always) save with zero bytes. This has been here for years, and they always suggest deleting preferences. Too bad the old developer didn't retain this software ... Felt Tip was responsive. You would also think by now that they would have changed the information in the About dialog to reflect the new owner, and changed the link in the Help to go do the new site and to have the right strings in the help info. But I guess that's too much to ask. When this product launched it was well maintained and worth the money. Now, it seems to be lost among all of Freeverse's game library. [alert admin]

Chmox 0.4b (Mac OS X)
This is indeed a good tool for working with chm files, but it certainly could use a search. But another concern is whether it's dead. This is the end of 2008 and the 4beta was released in 2006 ... this indicates to me yet another dead Mac product. Kind of makes me want to stick with the paid developers, but at least I don't rely on this for my revenue. [alert admin]

iStill 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Works well, but zero (literally) support ![]()

I've been using iStill to take close-up photos for a couple of years now, and functionally, it works well. The interface is a bit slow -- don't make adjustments too quickly! -- but workable. My big complaint is that the support is gone. Literally. I got quick response once right after I bought it, but e-mails sent every few months since 2006 have never been answered. (No, I have not had different issues every few months. I've been contacting him about the same UI suggestion and the same minor bug.) Because it does work, and because there is nothing like it, I can recommend it. Just keep in mind you may never, ever obtain support. [alert admin]

iStill 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Another developer leaves uses in the lurch
I first bought this in 2006, and about four hours after I contacted him with a problem, it was fixed. But that was the last I ever heard. I knew something was up: I told him that his web site has the versions mixed up (I have 1.3F, but the site says the latest is 1.2), and had included a minor bug and an interface suggestion, but I did not hear back. I have sent e-mails perhaps once every four to six months, and have never heard a peep. And what just kills me is that there really isn't anything like it that I am aware of. It's a fine piece of software. It's a shame to let it die. As much as I can't stand government interference in business, "there should be a law": If you abandon your software or drop it officially from production, the source code should move into open source. I can, however, recommend it. It works. Just don't expect to get anything more, ever, from this developer. [alert admin]

On the very first two files I created, NoteMind saved the files (binary, non-SQL) once, then could not save again. Upon opening the files, I got an alert that there was a problem with the format. In short, the files are toast. But the icing one the cake is the Synium support forum. At the time of this writing, the thread about lost data has no response by the developer, yet the forum is populated with the developer's comments about Apple's announcement, and about Randy Newman being on stage. I guess Randy Newman is more important than taking care of paying customers. [alert admin]

MacMsgViewer 1.0a4 (Mac OS X)
Not that it doesn't work somewhat ... it doesn't work, period. Sad, because it's a necessary application in some Microsoft-Windows-heavy environments. [alert admin]

Process 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Has potential, but cannot recommend now
Process has some great potential, but also carries with it some serious bugs and major shortcoming: for example, it can actually destroy an external Word document. There are features I like over Omni Outliner, but since Omni seems to stay in business, I'll switch anyway. I hate to say it, but it seems another Macintosh developer has gone out and gotten a "real" job and left what could be a great program to languish. Jumsoft, if you read this, please donate your code to open source or sell it off, if you won't support it. Granted I don't expect a version 3 in November with 2.0.2 released in July, but multiple crash reports and many e-mails with issues that *break data* should be met with some kind of response. This is not an expensive program, but nonetheless, I've wasted my money. [alert admin]

Bee Docs' Timeline 1.51 (Mac OS X)
Suffers from lack of attention
Be aware that this product has not had any serious update in a long, long time. It does what does okay, but for the price, one should expect more effort from a non-free software developer. [alert admin]

Duplicate Catcher 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Seems Ambrel is out of business
I came to look after over a year to see if it had been updated -- I had some correspondence with the developer, as I had turned this (paid-for) application loose on some 300,000 files. The identification component worked well, but the removal was a pain, relative to the actual selection and deletion. The developer said it would be looked at (this was the fall of 2005). Now AmbrielSoftware.com seems out of business. Sigh. [alert admin]

Forty-Two DVD-MP Plus 2.4.4 (Mac OS X)
Perhaps six months ago I wrote them about the same issues below. I was sent an attachment with the latest version (note the last bullet) and a promise to fix the site; but they still have not addressed these issues. To see what I mean, take a look the product page, then note the following:
- The gray version at the left says 2.3.2.
- The current version at the right says 2.3.4
- The download you get with the top link is filename 232, but a Get Info says 2.3.1
- The download you get with the bottom link is filename 233 -- it expands to 244 -- and its version number is 2.3.1
- An “About” of the one I already have says 2.3.1 (2.4.3) -- whatever THAT is supposed to mean
- Dragging the result of the bottom button's download over the one they sent me says mine is newer, yet mine is six months old

Something is wrong with your or your system. I've been using this since it was released and turn it loose on huge libraries, and have never had a problem other than that Futura font bug. That said, I think Graphic Converter makes a better Finder thumbnail).
