Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Repeatedly crashes

Updated from Quicken 2004 to Quicken 2006. Quicken 2006 repeatedly crashes. Back to Quicken 2004. Good thing that Intuit offers a money back guarantee. [alert admin]

Cocktail 3.4.1 (Mac OS X)

The best just keeps getting better

This program is legendary among those who have been using OS X for any length of time. It is not the only application to automate the running of Mac OS X's built-in mantenance scripts (others include OnyX, Xupport, Maintain and the list goes on). But it happens to be my personal FAVORITE, and I have never had a problem (except on certain machines, cleaning caches for some reason results in the screen brightness going to the dimmest setting, which can easily be fixed by just turning it back up one time). If you have not tried it, you should, and then compare it to the others. If you have tried it, well, you know that it is an excellent program. If people make claims about disastrous results from using Cocktail, it is either because they are striking back at the developer for asking a shareware fee (justified in my opinion since he is constantly improving it) or because the person's computer had a pre-existing problem which just happened to come to a head at the same time they ran Cocktail (Cocktail does not repair directory damage and for that they need DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com ). One thing which Cocktail does not quite clearly indicate, is that if you clean Caches or Re-Prebind the system, you must restart afterward or face unpleasant consequences. Use it, or don't use it, but do not put faith in the one star reviews as those people clearly are either being vindictive, regarding the shareware fee, or are blaming Cocktail for a serious pre-existing problem which Cocktail is not designed to remedy (such as disk directory damage or a faulty installation of Mac OS X). Timbuktu Pro 7.0 (Mac OS X)

Follow up ...

Netopia finally emailed me a working download link (I won't post it here for fear that they'll kill the link, since Netopia has gotten so paranoid about listing direct download URL's). So theoretically, if you contact Netopia technical support, at least they now have a working download link they'll email you (practically a miracle, for Netopia). [alert admin]

Timbuktu Pro 7.0 (Mac OS X)

WORST support, EVER !!!

After upgrading from Timbuktu Pro 6, Timbuktu Pro 7 crashes on my computer at the license screen (Mac OS X 10.3.2). After contacting Netopia's technical support department, I was e-mailed a link for downloading Timbuktu 7.0.1 which supposedlyl will fix the problem. The problem is, the link they emailed me is a bad link http://techsw/documents/bulletins/tb2mac/tb2mac_bulletin.htm . After e-mailing them back several times, they insist that their link works (if anybody can get the above link to work, it will be a miracle) and they still have not provided me with a working link to download Timbuku Pro 7.0.1 and I do not see it on their website. Please, if anyone has a working link to download Timbuktu Pro 7.0.1, please email me: tkgallery@mindspring.com Netopia's technical support department is worthless. They cannot even provide a working download link for their own software. [alert admin]

Cocktail 3.3.1 (Mac OS X)

To those who think everything should be free

If you insist on free, try OnyX or Xupport (which seems to be "donate-ware"). Those who believe that hard working developers should be compensated for their time and dedication to produce a quality product will find that Cocktail's modest shareware fee is justified. Cocktail is and always has been a quality product which continually evolves alongside a constantly changing operating system. [alert admin]

Showing its age, or just plain slow?

I used to think that Executive Sync was a great program - that's why I bought it. Did Panther break it, or was I just blind to how dreadfully slow it can be? I just attempted to syncronize two 3.3GB folders with modest changes and Executive Sync was still running it's pre-sync indexing 3 minutes later - the actual file copying had not even begun! Blah. So I downloaded Psync X (which by the way is donation-ware), and about 20 seconds after setup, the whole syncronization was through - no muss no fuss. In other words, Psync X blew ExecutiveSync out of the water in terms of speed. It was pretty pathetic for Executive Sync, actually. A program that I used to love. [alert admin]

A-Dock X 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

One of the great Mac OS X Enhancements!

A-Dock has matured into a stable, brilliantly executed solution for those wanting a secondary dock showing only the icons of running applications and specific folders (such as your Home folder, Applications folder, etc), in addition to other optional "modules". While the competing program "Workstrip" offers a "fully loaded" approach to a secondary dock, along with a high price tag, A-Dock offers a refreshingly simple and unburdoned approach (and is donation-ware). A-Dock: one of the great pleasures of using Mac OS X! A must-try for those with overloaded docks, needing a second dock with only the essentials! [alert admin]

Cocktail 3.1.1 (Mac OS X)

I don't know what the complaining is about ...

I have not had any problems with Cocktail, before, or now. I've tried OnyX and Xupport, and to be honest, they are also very good. But it is Cocktail that I turn to when my computer is acting up, and clicking on Pilot, and running all of the maintenance options 100% of the time has fixed the problem, and fast and effortlessly. And to all of the people who complain about the price, well, these people expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter for free. [alert admin]

Proteus 3.04 (Mac OS X)

Hold off on installing version 3.0.4

This version (3.0.4) has a serious bug. It hangs on launch with the baloon message "Loading History". I'd stick with the last stable version until the developer fixes this. [alert admin]

Repeatedly crashes

Doctor J, Your statement that Quicken 2006 crashing was "my problem" has been refuted by the number of bug fixes addresses "unexpected quitting" in R4. Please, don't make excuses for buggy software by blaming it on users. At least Quicken has now resolved some of these bugs in R4, according to the revision notes, and once I receive my refund, I might repurchase version 2006 and give it another shot.

Good but...

Have you tried resetting the router (pushing in the reset button in the back of the router)? It will erase your settings, and you'll have to enter them again, but it might fix your dropped signals.

Mozilla is excellent, but Safari is no slouch

Well, I like Mozilla a lot too. But Safari is not exactly a pimply faced kid. Safari is a mean, lean browser, and for speed it is #1. It is a work in progress, and has a come a long way in a short while. The next version of Safari should be awesome.

Confirmed: Little Snitch, itself, is Spyware.

Little Snitch definitely is "calling home". It's communicating, at the very least, the registration code. What else, I wonder ??? Perhaps we need an additional utility to snitch on Little Snitch.

As far as the hang at the Login Window Starting ...

This sounds unrelated to Gimp Print. The problem with the computer hanging at "Login Window Starting" has been covered at MacFixit. Here's the link http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20031229075054179

should not be listed here

Since when shouldn't products "which can't be downloaded" be listed at VersionTracker? On what do you base your comment? I hope that most others do not share your opinion. I am very happy to read others' opinions on Garage Band, notwithstanding that it can't be downloaded.
