MathMagic Personal Edition 3.7b16 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
I am about to try MathMagic but I noticed that the $10 price listed on this page for the personal edition is incorrect. The publisher's site lists the product at $100. [alert admin]

POP Peeper 3.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
I realized some time ago that virtually all of the email that I receive comes in HTML format and that the email notifier that I had been using for many years just wasn't cutting it anymore. It was text based and was no longer being developed so I set out to find a replacement. I tried dozens of them and most of them were nice and I ended up buying one. Unfortunately and after the fact, I discovered that occasionally (about once a day!) I would get an email that simply would not display in the email notifier. The screen would simply come up blank. So I bought another one that I had previously tried. It suffered from the same problem! One program would display email "A" but not "B" while the second program would display "B" but not "A." This was very perplexing. Then I discovered POP Peeper. I have been using it daily for almost a month and it has not failed to display a single email! It does all the usual stuff like periodically checking for new email on all of my accounts, allows composition of email and replying to emails along with managing an address book and offers lots of display options. And it's FREE! I simply don't want to have a bloated email client hogging up my computer's memory and resources all day long but I do need to know whether any important email has arrived. POP Peeper is lightweight, unobtrusive and accomplishes that task nicely. When email does arrive, I can have a quick look at it and dispatch it promptly and let my main email client take over the heavy lifting when required. I recommend POP Peeper without reservation. I only wish I could get a refund for those other email notifiers I bought! [alert admin]

Virtual Poet 2.2.39 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
This product is very weak. It was unable to find rhyming words for the first three common words I typed in - including the word "poet." For comparison, an online rhyming dictionary gives hundreds of one and two syllable rhyming words. Moreover, Virtual Poet doesn't seem to have any way of interacting with a document such as inserting a "hit" into it. Even if you are lucky enough to find a rhyming word, you'll have to type it into your document yourself. It does look nice but that's about it. Sorry, guys, I can't recommend VP. [alert admin]

ShellToys XP 5.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
The price listed in the description is $19 but when you go to buy it be prepared for a shock. They want $50 for the program. [alert admin]

Igor Pro 5.04b (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
I downloaded the demo version of Igor Pro a few days ago and was so impressed with it that I bought it! My decision was not impulsive, however, as I have researched many products and I use other graphing and analysis programs (S-Plus, Grapher, Gauss, O-Matrix, etc. all of which are top notch). In addition to a truckload of features (too numerous to list) Igor Pro just has a good feel to it. The program makes it easy to import data and quickly analyze, process, rearrange, visualize, present and use that data. Igor Pro includes a simple, efficient and high level programming language which, in addition to facilitating data processing, allows for simulating data. I have found it to be exceptional. I heartily recommend Igor Pro. [alert admin]

DeadLine 2.22 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
This program focuses on one task - finding numerical roots of mathematical equations - and it does so very well. I use if often because it's small, fast and convenient particularly when I need a simple graph of a function along with its roots to insert or paste into a class handout. I especially like the fact that I don't have to haul out the heavy and cumbersome equipment to handle such a routine task. The program has a handy feature for moving and scaling graphs. If you move your mouse cursor to the edge of a graph a navigation arrow appears and clicking on it moves the graph in the corresponding direction. I would like to see some finer control over this process such as click-dragging the mouse to move the graph. [alert admin]

Algebrus 2.1.0.280 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
Algebrus is a powerful computational tool that fills the vast void between calculator and full-blown analysis programs such as S-Plus or Gauss. Of all its features (including vector and matrix operations, solving ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, etc.) the one I find most useful is the built-in programming language which they call XPascal. It allows you to create your own procedures, functions and libraries. You can instruct Algebrus to load your libraries at startup and use them just as if they were built-in functions and procedures. Algebrus uses extended precision which makes working with "large" numbers possible. For example, it's quite easy to create a Factorial function for dealing with permutations and combinations. Algebrus will handle exponents up to about 4,900 so that analyzing binomial distributions with 1,000 or so items is no longer out of reach. Another important feature is Algebrus' graphing capabilities. Simply define your function (or import data!) and type in a command to plot it over a specified range and you have your plot. This can also be done under program control. Plots are well laid out and scaled though there appears to be a slight anomaly when dealing with very large numbers - the numbers for scaling the ordinate are not done properly but I expect this to be fixed in a later release. Space does not permit covering all the features of this wonderful program. I can, however, heartily recommend it! [alert admin]

Frigate 3.28 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
I bought and paid for this software - and it worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then it suddenly and inexplicably stopped working. The authors have utterly failed to repair the problem and I've repeatedly hounded them for well over a year with download after download of program revisions. I am not alone, however, as the Frigate forum contains messages from a large number of users with the same problem. The authors always advise clearing out the registry (manually!) and installing some .DLL file - it does't work! Period. [alert admin]

Magellan Explorer 3.20 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
One's choice of a file manager comes down to two things: does it do what you need it to do and is it simple to use? For me, Magellan gets an A+ on both counts and, as a bonus, adapts readily to my changing needs. [alert admin]

Mathematica 5.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
The advertised price ($139.95) is phony. Expect to pay at least $900 (academic) for this package unless you are a student. Astonishingly, Wofram's site doesn't even list the student price but instead provides a "call for price" link which is a dead end. The rest of us will settle for competitive products with better than 90% of the capabilities but at less than 10% of the cost of Mathematica. Wolfram can do better than resorting to switch and bait tactics. [alert admin]

I recommend visiting http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/ where you can get the latest and greatest builds and info about the current state of the program. I am guessing that you installed v.9.0 on top of the old v.8 - not advisable! I suggest a clean install of 9.0. It's working on my machine and I'm ready to dump the old version - the new one is marvelous!
