VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)
I have been using the VersionTracker app sporadically, and have relied mostly on the e-mail notifications. Today, I ran the app (after perhaps 3-4 months) and noticed that several of the apps it reported as needing upgrade just didn't jibe, and then found out that some of its database is just plain bonkers: - VT.app reports my installed copy (and "Inspect" indeed links to the only one on my hard disk) of iMovie as being v.7.1.1 --- when in fact it is v.8.0.3; huh??? - VT.app reports that I have v.3.2 of MasterWriter (correct), but everything ("Insepct," "Download," the info pane in the main window...) tries to tell me that this is the same as "Eclipse SDK 3.4.2," whatever that may be??? What gives??? [alert admin]

Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.3 (Mac OS X)
The 8.1.3 updater cannot quit Adobe's own programs if running. OK, that's minor. So, I quit the offending program, and the updater runs... only to tell me that the update failed because something in the set-up was modified since the original installation, and that I should reinstall the program and then run the update again. Ahem. After I just freshly reinstalled the whole caboodle, and let it install the browser plug-in and all! What a colossal waste of time! [alert admin]

TeXShop 2.25 (Mac OS X)
Hi, I've used TeXShop since its debut, back when Mac OS X replaced System 9. I'm a mathematical physicist, and use TeXShop daily, 24/7/366. As indicated in the "title", I do believe this program has been spearheading a new category of software: WishWare. Ten days ago, I wrote to Richard Koch, asking if a split view in the PDF preview window were possible... and received the answer that same-day, that it's implemented and ready for release! In the past, I have made similar suggestions, and everything I wished for (and much more!) is implemented. Oh... and it is free!!! Well, wishes are free, so it does seem befitting. Richard Koch, THANK YOU!! Cheers, Tristan [alert admin]

MacJournal 3.2 (Mac OS X)
Ever since MacJournal became commercial, Mariner Software made updating that much more complicated: there was a sign-in web-page before the downloading. Well, now that's gone! Download, replace, start it up. As it should have been. As it was before it was commercial. As for the program itself, I use at least hourly for passwords, lists of office phones (grouped by workflow rather than by name, as address-books have them), IP numbers, "brilliant" ideas for later, ... And, that's what it's for. As for the rating: Support/Documentation - I don't think I ever used them (and that's way good!), and the price: I upgraded from the (paid) shareware to the (paid) commercial version, and the version number is still within the same decimal (i.e., no next-version update price; let's hope it stays that way and Mariner does not become Micro$oft). Reason 3.0 (Mac OS X)
Don't trash Reason 2.5 just yet!
I've been using Reason since v.1.0 and was awaiting v.3.0 with an anticipation built upon the previous -always very positive- experience. So, I downloaded Reason 3.0 Demo - and started it up. After telling me that is a Demo, that I can't save and that it will quit after 20 minutes, it quit immediately, because REX wasn't loadded properly. Say what? Well, soon after that, I restarted my PowerBook in the target mode (for backing up), and after restarting "normally", I tried the Reason 3.0 Demo again, and now it loaded properly. (Hmmm... and here I thought that the days when the whole system has to be restarted for a newly installed app to run were gone with the wind.) So Reason started up, and presented me with the "built in" song. On the first glance, you just have to admire the nice and shiny updates on the graphics. And then I hit "Play"... and after a few seconds of playing, Reason told me that my PowerBook (G4 @ 667MHz, w/1Gb RAM) was too slow. Well, I know it's not a dual-G5 @ 1.5 GHz, but even just for the dinky lil' "built in" song? So, I thought, maybe the "built in" song uses some really involved effects; why not try something I wrote? So I did. Of course, Reason 3.0 did not know where I kept my refills, so it prompted me to find them. And, owing to the changed interface, I wasn't able to define default file locations on the fly, but was content to just locate them one by one. Ahem. Except that they all now have "bad format". Huh? Not just one; all of the 600+ Mb (not much, but still...)? Presumably, I'll have to recompile them, somehow (?) or reload recompiled refills? Well, sorry. Back to Reason 2.5, which handles all my work and all my refills with no hiccup, even at ~30 devices in the rack and plenty of parameter automation, and which needs optimization at the expense of latency only for a few of them. i-Installer 2.65.2 (Mac OS X)
Hi, I've used Mr. Wierda's i-Installer to maintain an up-to-date TeX installation, which I use with TeXShop. Recently, I read somewhere that there is a i-Package that allows using the Mac OS (X) fonts within TeX. Alas! the i-Installer shows an all too brief blurb about the packages - most of which say nothing about the functionality of these. So, which i-Package(s) do I need to be able to use Mac OS (X) fonts in TeX? Thanks, Tristan [alert admin]

TexShop 1.35b (Mac OS X)
I've been using TeXShop from the beginning -having switched from Textures when OS X debuted and Textures wasn't ported. Since then, I have on occasion recommended additions (a very, very spoiled user's wish-list), and the only feature not yet implemented is Textures' "synchronicity". (By clicking in the preview window, you are transferred into the source window, at about the place where the code produced the object on which you clicked, and vice versa.) AND IT IS FREE!!! As for the 1.35b issue, R. Koch's attitude and dilligence is most commendable: "After a release, I try to fix bugs as they crop up, changing the number. After a couple of weeks, there will be a 1.36." (taken from his e-mail to "quack27", posted in this forum). Of course, we'd all wish for a bug-free program, but the only absolutely correct computer-science theorem is that there is no bug-free code. And Mr. Koch certainly does marvels to keep TeXShop as close to an ideal as possible. Kudos, commendations and acclaim! [alert admin]

BookWorm 5.5 (Mac OS X)
Hi, I have just downloaded BookWorm and read the manual - which is unavailable while working on a(nother) project, since it uses the same project view window and BookWorm can have no more than one project view window open. How am I supposed to look up a feature while working on a project? By closing the project while I open the manual? Why isn't it available in the Help menu-bar item? Oh, sorry... un-Mac-like, there is no "Help" menu item in "BookWorm". To my horror, clicking the red (close window) button on the project viewer/editor's window made the project window dutifully close --- and also turned all the menu commands inaccessible! I had to quit the program and relaunch it just so as to be able to open a project! This is about as illogical (no to say un-Mac-like) a behavior as is the fact that the "About BookWorm" window has no red (close window) button but is instead 3/4" larger so as to accommodate a "Close" button at the bottom! Not to speak of the 1/2" wasted space at the top of the project view/edit window which contains the pop-up menu for chapters, a "Print" button, and the name of the program in huge letters (with the current date)!?! Sorry, but the "Print" button's functionality already is in the "File/..." menu where it had designed to be for two decades; the "chapters" pop-up menu belongs in the menu bar (where surprisingly it isn't); the date (and time) is in every Mac's menu bar, on the right, and the program name is on the left, right next to the Aqua apple logo. The program types about 1.5 letters per second (I timed it!), on a 667MHz G4 PB with 1 Gb RAM, where even MS Word is limber. Well, for all of us who type with more than a single digit (both hands included), that is unacceptably SLOW. However, the "no undo feature" takes the cake! Just curious: is that a general ideological-philosophical standpoint or just a personal idiosyncrasy? Oh... and the author/programmer want 20 pounds sterling for ...this??? No, wait, it gets even better: the program just reported (while in the background as I write this, perhaps while attempting to auto-save?): "An out of bounds exception error occured[sic]. Please report this to me." Sincerely, Tristan P.S. Why isn't there a "0 stars" rating? This one wasn't earned. [alert admin]

Well, Mariner Software must have read my comment, and re-instated the intermediate web-page where you (again!) have to register every time you downlowad the update. @#$%^&*! ...ahem. Sorry, I just had to say it.

Hi, Does the commercial version (unlike the demo version) handle the pre-v.3.0 refills? There is an oddle of free (and pretty cool) refills, many of which I have used all over my projects. I simply cannot upgrade to v.3.0 (nuclear hexapentesimal G16@1.5 ZigaHerz... or not). Thanks, Tristan

Yes... however, as I added to my own entry, this implementation - requires modifying the source code (I hope it is simply ignored by other TeX implementations, accross platforms, and earlier TeXShop versions... we do collaborate), and - functions with pdf(la)tex, not with the TeX+GhostScript version. The Textures' implementation required no modification of the source code (whence perfect compatibility), and worked with Textures own previewing engine (which was based on QuickDraw, I believe) that permitted embedding PostScript objects. Cheers,…

To clarify: there IS a "pdfsync"-ing feature, however, it: - requires modifying the source code (I hope it is simply ignored by other TeX implementations, accross platforms, and earlier TeXShop versions... we do collaborate), and - functions with pdf(la)tex, not with the TeX+GhostScript version. I fully understand that making a "synchronicity"-like feature work in all circumstances is a daunting wish - but, hey! TeXShop already has a fantastic slew of wonderfully amazing features!

Got that too: try the Latex panel (Apple-=) or the Matrix panel (Apple-Option-=).
