Storyist 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Beautiful, Amazing, Impossible.

I was surprised to see that Storyist 2 has reached 2.0.2 and no one has yet reviewed or commented on it, because it is a beautiful and elaborate program that has so much promise for organizing and creating great work. I was very excited to see the interface on my first run in demo mode, I almost paid for it then and there. But I held off to give it a true spin since I already own most every writing tool out there -- just in case I decide to LOVE one of them. Well, first off I decided to import a short, six chaptered children's book into Storyist and everything looked great at a glance. However, looking closer, three of the six chapters didn't start on a new page. So I tried to fix one and it suddenly stopped being a chapter. No big deal, I'll just format it as a chapter and everything will be a-okay. So go to make it a "chapter" again and... wow. Just wow. An hour later, after reading the template walk-through over and over, after perusing the Getting Started Guide in the program itself, and of course reading "Adding Chapters" chapters in both locations, trying this, trying that, I just walked away. A pretty icon, wonderful GUI, great feature set, but when a user can't even add a chapter in a novel writing program? Oh, I'm sure I can do it, but the fact that I actually put effort into it and can't figure out one of the most basic things someone would try to do with this program, it was... shocking, frankly. So back to Scrivener and StoryMill and Jer's Novel Writer and Ulysses I go -- still trying to LOVE one of them. Sigh. [alert admin]

Schreiben 4.7 (Mac OS X)

unfortunately, it can't handle word docs.

i love the idea of this app and the developers seem supercool. however, i simply can't use it. for my work, we use word doc scripts with headers that contain company information. And then the content itself is in a table. however, this app cannot properly open word docs. the header is down at the bottom like a footer and the content is on top, and if it goes to a second page all heck breaks loose. i test it with every update, and it's never been able to open word docs properly. if they ever get true word compatibility, it could become my everyday app. [alert admin]

SiteSucker 2.2.3 (Mac OS X)

simply does not work

when this first arrived on the scene years ago, i was in love with it. i fired it up and sucked down hundreds of sites without a hitch... and that's even without adjusting any of the handful of configuration options. and then they added features to it... more and more configuration options. soon it just simply did not work anymore. not at all. not on any site. ever. i have spent hours and hours trying every possible combination of every setting and i get nothing but an index page from any site i try. i keep giving up, and then coming back, only to be angry, frustrated, and hopeless all over again. DockStar 2.1 (Mac OS X)

What happened????

This is/was one of my favorite pieces of software I've purchased. I always knew what account had mail in at a glance... I loved it! Especially adding the menubar feature. However, somewhere along the way in a System Update, it broke. Mail would quit on launch. I tried everything to solve the problem, and removing DockStar did the trick. I confirmed it repeatedly. I thought surely they'd fix that soon and not leave paid users without for too long. But it has been many many months. Nothing. [alert admin]

Perian 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)

confused. please help

I've always been confused by this... I have other QT Plug-ins that do some of these formats. Does this override them? Or will there be conflicts? Do I need to uninstall others? Do I pick which formats it uses and doesn't? Seems very ambiguous. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)

DO NOT INSTALL, if you need to open these programs

The apps will no longer launch after updating. You will just be caught in auto-updater purgatory anytime you try to launch an app. I foolishly tried to update in the middle of my work day. And now I am screwed. Thanks, MS. Awesome. [alert admin]

Montage 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)

it's all about the money

I would love to replace my Final Draft with this, but this is a $50 program charging $140 for itself. Of course, Final Draft is a $50 program charging $225 for itself -- but Final Draft & Movie Magic Screenwriter came into existence when software was a rare and treasured thing. Now, in the freeware/shareware era, that business model is archaic. However, they cornered the market and no one has forced them adjust their price. They are professional programs. But come on... in today's world, they're both just specialized word processors with old code. Finally, along comes a lean mean Mac-only Montage and it got me excited. At $50 it would be a nice kick in the pants to the big two. It could sell to pros with its bonus features and hobbyists alike with it's friendly pricing. Instead, they over-priced it, edging out the dabblers and making the pros stick with the industry standard -- after all, it's still an investment to make. I've been waiting for them to get more realistic about pricing... but they won't budge. So Montage remains just a cheaper version of the other two that isn't proven or cross-platform... but has some bonus features. Sad, really. [alert admin]

VMware Fusion 1.1.57919 (Mac OS X)

STAY AWAY FROM THIS SOFTWARE

I have been using BootCamp for a solid year without a single problem. I installed VMWare Fusion today, and my BootCamp partition is now completely useless. Windows dies immediately on startup and says that it can no longer be used with my hardware. This happens in VMWare Fusion, and it happens in a direct BootCamp startup. In desperation, after a few hours I even tried to rescue it all with Parallels. Same problem. Nothing works anymore and the Help offers no troubleshooting tips of any use. So now, I have to reinstall Windows, redownload everything, redo all of my settings, reimport my files and bookmarks. Yes, time to rebuild everything I had done to Windows over an entire year's time. So, thanks VMWare for time and money I will waste trying to get back what I already had. [alert admin]

RE: Beautiful, Amazing, Impossible.

Love achieved -- Scrivener is the winner! I strongly encourage you to watch the screencast tutorial first. Once I did that, I dove in more responsibly and am very pleased with Scrivener.

why $50?

i arrived at $50 through a simple process. If it's a simple program for play, i peak at $15. if it is a useful utility i peak at $25. if it is a specialized program for professional use, i peak at $50. of course there still exists the old guard of major work-related investments like microsoft office, adobe cs, etc. but even they have new world replacements on their heels that adhere to a more…

skEdit

Number one reason: buzz. I'd never heard of skEdit... and now I'm in love with Coda, purchased it, and have no desire to try something that may made me think I made a mistake! But (and I say this without having tried skEdit), if you try Coda... it just feels right. It's elegant and easy, yet powerful. But mostly, you have to hand it to Panic... they came out with a roar, and give a…

Software the world doesn't need

As you can see from many of the reviews and responses here, there clearly is a market for it. I know I greatly appreciate not switching between tools and accomplishing the same tasks in one window. Enough to pay for this solution even though it's replacing my own blend of free apps. On top of that, I've long been a fighter against bloatware, but this code is lean and nimble. Despite the plethora of tools…

Don't use iTunes 7

Also, if you're looking to do serious projection for parties than get g-force. apple is built on the basic engine behind g-force -- but like everything free, you have to pay to go pro. that doesn't diminish the value of itunes one bit.
