Refurb Store 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Interface is great but flawed

I really like the look of this widget, but if the list is longer than your screen there is no evident way to resize it. [alert admin]

DVD Spanner 1.0 (Mac OS X)

A suggestion

After reading the feedback for this app, I think the posters might like Folder Splitter instead. It will divide your files up into folders of whatever size you want (DVD, CD, etc) and then you can burn the folders manually. This would help avoid any burning issues with bad discs, etc. [alert admin]

Charge for every Postcard printed

Wow. These guys charge you for every postcard you print after the first 3, and the prices are similar to what you would pay for a postcard in a shop ($3.99 USD to print 1) while you still pick up the tab for card stock, printer, ink, cost of the app, and time to compose the card. I'm the kind of person who gets a bit disgusted by profiteering on this level and maybe you are too. [alert admin]

Harmony Remote 7.3.0 (Mac OS X)

Love the remote, Hate the software

I am baffled why Harmony would take something that worked by simply logging into their website and complicate it by building the most cumbersome, ugly, and un-Maclike application I have ever seen. If I was a new Harmony Remote owner and didn't know about the 'good old days' I would be completely turned off by this product. But... the remote is really cool! Major points off for an awful installation and update application for Macs. [alert admin]

Fits my needs perfectly

After switching from NetNewsWire recently, I'm loving this app! And the price is right, too. [alert admin]

iPodVolumeBooster 1.1 (Mac OS X)

In repsonse to 100dB will send you deaf...

Like the ignorance the EU has shown by passing a law to limit the output level of audio devices, you have shown your ignorance to the issue as well.

First, measuring the electrical output in dBs does not accurately reflect the acoustic output level of a device. Here is a nice web page to get you started on the vagarities of dB, impedance, and loudness. www.phys.unsw.edu.au

A fine example would be to take 3 different models of headphones and listen to them on your iPod with the same piece of music. I can assure you that each brand/model headphone will have a different output level.

Second, OSHA states that in the workplace a person can spend 2 hours in a 100dB acoustic environment (A-Weighted) safely. www.osha.gov This would suggest that even if dBs measured the actual acoustic sound output of a device accurately it would prove to be a rather low level. Most concerts you would visit (yes, even Celine Dion) would easily exceed 105-110dB for hours. Bring your trusty dB meter to your next concert and see for yourself.

So the politicians in the EU pass a law to arbitrarily limit the electrical output of the iPod to protect you from yourself, then you buy some spiffy new high-impedence headphones and you can't get them loud enough. This software fixes what politicians should have never meddled with in the first place. [alert admin]

I can't resist the temptation to comment on the name of this app. It makes me laugh. [alert admin]

Now Up-to-Date & Contact 5.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Necessary Evil

With Apple asleep at the wheel in the groupware department, Now Software keeps churning out substandard and barely working apps that fill a desperate need. Just with the server alone, I've had problems with the automatic backups, intermittent web-publishing issues, runaway CPU usage that reaches 100% requiring a manual restart, etc. I don't know who to be more upset with, Apple for leaving us in the dust, or Now for pushing an obviously broken on those of us who desperately need a workable solution. What a mess. [alert admin]

Anti Spam 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Another repeat

SpamStopper is free and does the same thing. Not as a Freeway action, but how often do you really obfuscate mailto links?
I think it's great that someone wanted to write a little code, but why do people insist on charging for one time use apps? [alert admin]

you're right

The lack of combo updater means you must run 11 updates after doing a fresh install of MS Office 2004. Totally stupid. A complete waste of time. They should know better.

Sorry, but this still sucks...!

I just deleted those annoying apps and folders and installed 7.4.1 from scratch, and remoteapp as well as the 2 folders are still created. Along with some of the persistent bugs (data entry hangs sometimes, etc) this is especially sloppy software. It's a shame, because the remotes rock.

This guy is a troll. Check his posts.

I fell into the trap once of responding reasonably to one of his posts before looking into his posting history. Don't waste your time with these diluted rants, he's just that crazy old guy who keeps the local kid's soccer ball if it lands in his back yard.

OMG

Apparently you think your laundry list of credentials, including a plane crash, give you some kind of expert authority to review this freeware application. It is strange to me that with all your years experience you would take the time to write this lengthy 'review' basically saying that this application serves no purpose for you. Funny... I was here to eagerly download the latest version of a free application that I and my friends appreciate and…

Can you sell me some snake oil as well?

If you bothered to read the developers blog you would find that this software uses a proprietary method to distribute the data on the disc and includes hidden recovery blocks (think PAR files) to help if the disc does become damaged. Personally I would still not use optical for archival purposes, but this product is by no means 'snake oil' and the poster of this comment is a troll.

Superb software and ASTOUNDINGLY overpriced

I agree, this product is way overpriced for home use. But setting up Apple's built-in FTP is incredibly painful and limiting, so suggesting it is an alternative to something like Rumpus isn't very helpful in this context.

Nifty idea

To complain about paying a penny per identification really demonstrates a mentality of entitlement.

I'll assume you're referring to my comment about iEatBrainz and it's community based approach to file identification? I think you missed my point. I have been in the music business for 20 years and it is my only source of income. My clients can pay me because people buy their CDs. I use iEatBrainz to identify songs in my collection that I…

A worthy project

I second that. I was very excited to see such a promising new app for working with panoramas. Unfortunately it crashes so often I was not able to create any panoramas, but the same can be said for Stitcher (the app I am trying to get away from).
