Mactracker 5.0.10 (Mac OS X)
For this invaluable little app. As a Mac Consultant I use it almost every day to check the RAM specs or maximum supported system on various models of older Macs. And it's available for the iPhone/iPod Touch now also, for the same ridiculous price: Free! It's developers like this that make the Mac such a great platform. I was hoping he would charge for the iPhone version, though, and make some well deserved money for his tireless efforts. I would be happy to pay $9.99 for the iPhone version. Heck, I'd think it was a bargain at $50 if it saved me even one pointless trip to the store for the wrong RAM chip for some client. And it's done that more than once. Terry [alert admin]

iCab 4.6 (Mac OS X)
I have been using iCab on and off since OS 8 days, and I'm pleased to commend the developer for continuing to support OS 8.5 & 9 as I have a few clients that still! use those systems. Internet Explorer and Netscape are not nearly as capable as iCab on those systems. Although I mostly use Safari in OS 10, I keep most of the dozen or so different browsers on my systems for testing purposes, and iCab performs with the best of them. Great preference set, and very compact footprint. Firefox takes forever to boot up, while iCab launches faster than Safari. One suggestion though: give us a color choice on the toolbar buttons. The yellow is a bit garish. Maybe a blue, teal, and purple choice would be nice. Something a bit more soothing. And I kind of miss the tacky little yellow cab progress indicator with it's cloud of exhaust. Terry [alert admin]

Mactracker 5.0.7 (Mac OS X)
Love it. Been using Mactracker for years. I'll be the first in line to BUY, repeat, BUY, an iPhone/iPod Touch version for, say, $9.99. Or even $19.99. It's time to make a few dollars for your outstanding efforts on behalf of the Mac community and especially us Mac techs. I use this to look up RAM specs or max system support on older models several times a week, if not more often. For Mac Pros, this is a Must Have. Terry [alert admin]

Mouse Locator 1.1 (Mac OS X)
What a great little Application. Thank you so much. Works flawlessly. I install it on all my client's machines, and it is really useful when I am using a projector for presentations. I set the Hold function as low as possible, and the delay to about 20 seconds. That means it just flashes up long enough to find the pointer, and doesn't come up continually when I am actively using the mouse. [alert admin]

Apple QuickTime 7.2 (Mac OS X)
I made the mistake of running Software Update and installing the Quicktime 7.2 and iTunes 7.1.3 updates last night. Following the installation, the G5 iMac running OS 10.4.10 would not boot up, hanging at the progress bar with the blue background and never bringing up the user login window. I could boot from my backup 10.4.10 on a Firewire external HD, so I knew the hardware was OK. Running FSCK, Applejack, Disk Warrior, Tech Tools Pro, resetting the PRAM/NVRAM, and repairing permissions did not resolve the problem. After hanging at the startup screen, the computer would simply shut itself off after a while. Eventually I had to reinstall OS 10.4.9 to get things working again. That meant reinstalling my Palm software, Missing Sync, printer and scanner drivers, among other things. I won't be updating to 10.4.10 or Quicktime 7.2 and iTunes 7.1.3 again. Mac's may not have any viruses, but with Apple Software Updates serving the same purpose, who needs viruses? On the other hand, being a Mac consultant, no doubt these latest *upgrades* will generate lots of new business for me, so maybe I shouldn't complain. ;-) Terry [alert admin]

iCab 3.0.3 (Mac OS 9)
I have quite a few clients still using OS 9, and iCab is the only browser that still works with most secure websites (e.g., online banking, stock trading, etc.). Netscape 7.0.2 will open most websites also, but it is so slow and loaded up with AOL bloat and email junk as to be almost useless. iCab is quick and clean, and has been updated regularly. Thanks to it's developer for keeping up an OS 9 browser long after the big boys dropped all OS 9 support. Terry Lawrence [alert admin]

LimeWire X 4.9.24 (Mac OS X)
I've been using Limewire for several years now, and it just keeps getting better. The installer in particular is much improved, and I find the searches pretty fast. No complaints. All these whiners that *censored* about free software are invited to make a better version themselves. Oldwhatsisface [alert admin]

LimeWire X 4.3.3 (Mac OS X)
A number of my clients have bought the Pro version in the last month or two, and been unable to download it. Nothing happens when you click on the download link. The free version continues to work just fine, though. If the Limewire team want money, which they have certainly earned, they need to fix the OS X download link on their website. [alert admin]

Mactracker 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)
for your ceaseless efforts to stay on top of an ever changing database, not to mention the improvements version after version. And all provided as a free service to the Mac community. Apple should have you on the payroll, but don't hold your breath. What a wonderful resource for Mac pros, and anyone interested in the history and legacy of Apple Computer. Thanks, Ian. [alert admin]

The problem: Limewire icon just bounces a few times on the dock and fails to launch. No error message; just nothing happens. I just dealt with this problem for a client. The Short Version of the fix: Delete your Limewire preferences in the ~name of user/library/preferences folder. Then run the current Macintosh OS 10 updaters from the Software Update under the Apple Menu to update the OS 10 Java and security code to be compatible…
