Books 3.1.1 (Mac OS X)
So far Books is a pretty nice application. Its interface is easy to use, and it seems fairly customizalbe. It does have some omissions that seem strange to me, such as no standard fields for any sort of catalog number like Dewey or Library of Congress. It has also has no standard field for price, and the main reason I need a book catalog is for insurance purposes. And, like many similar book catalog apps, it has a field for reviews, which seems odd to me for an app catalog books owned, but maybe that's not how a lot of folks use it? Books separates info about a book into several panes, which provides a less cluttered view but far less information. I can imagine that this would get to be a problem if you had to enter many books by hand, or if your need for a particular field doens't match the developer's understanding of the field's priority. However, this app is pretty polished at this point. [alert admin]

This is harder in Mac OS than it should be.
I wish the OS provided us such a hook. However, I've been using applescript to do this. I don't know who originally wrote this code snippet, but I think I picked it up over on macosxhints: do shell script "system_profiler SPAirPortDataType|awk -F\": \" '/Current Wireless Network/{print $2}' -- this will return you the SSID which you can use to detect your home or other network. I use it to mount volumes and run backups when I get home and to put away some elements of my movie collection when my work SSID is detected ;-) [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2006-005 (Mac OS X)
This update caused my iBook G4 to take about twenty minutes to restart. I rebooted the machine into Safe Mode after the twenty minutes, and then rebooted the regular way and all was fine. I don't know if my machine hung, or if I interrupted a permissions reset. [alert admin]

Lineform 1.2 (Mac OS X)
I like this application because it's quick with a small resource footprint (iBook user), but it's interface isn't quite like the standards I'm used to from Freehand, Illustrator, and MacDraw II. I don't draw much these days, but this program seems to forge some new ground needlessly in terms of how you constrain lines, how lines are highlight, how you finish Bezier curves. This is a bit frustrating if you need a small, light application for quick jobs, which is the niche this is going for. Why learn new tricks when the old ones are solid? And like most Freeverse products, the price is a little silly; why should this cost so much more than the much-more-capable-for-its-niche GraphicConverter? I will be sticking with the less capable but (barely) adequate tools in the gray-haired old AppleWorks. [alert admin]

Azureus BitTorrent Client 2.4.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I love all the customization Azureus offers. SafePeer is especially important to me, as is the ability to use other plugins. I also like the way I can bias my up bandwidth toward towards certain torrents (like ones with few other seeds or Mac-oriented torrents). A lot of people are mentioning footprint, so here are my numbers: it sucks up about 220 megs of RAM and 15-20% of a single G4 500MHz processor. OTOH, you can run it on an old machine, like a beige G3, and just let it sit there doing its job. Some people might be intimidated at first by all the options, but the set-up for basic use is only a few steps that are well-explained. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.7 (Mac OS X)
I use Acrobat Pro a lot for literature review. I’ve had few troubles with version until this one, which seems to crash about every third or fourth time I highlight some text. In addition this version doesn’t correctly zoom the document window when returning to normal view from fullscreen view. That’s not really much of an issue, but the constant crashing is. [alert admin]

Waste of Money - Leopard's Preview Does Everything This Does
No doubt, Preview has improved significantly for Leopard users. However, this application still does some things Preview doesn't. Also this application existed before the improved Preview and works on Tiger. So it's quite unreasonable to lash out at the developer as if he were a thief. I'm completely unbiased on this, as I use Acrobat Pro and don't know the developer from Adam.

It is good to have the same unzipper on both Mac and Windows
I just compared this to Betterzip, and the only feature difference I see is that Betterzip has an option to omit filetypes from archives based on a filename pattern match. Am I missing some other differences?

I agree Azureus can be a hog, but the geeky prefs pains and Vuze interface can both be dealt with by consulting the really excellent wikis for the app. I keep trying to replace it too, but Azureus simply offers functions that I like too much as they're implemented in Azureus, like SafePeer, web UI, traffic shaping, control over which torrents to seed and why, and so on. Yep, Azureus is bloated. But it has two features that I really need at this point: SafePeer and remote torrent administration. I know Transmission is working the remote admin deal, but I don't know about the other. Bookends vs. EndNote vs. Sente
Bookends IS clunky, ugly, and slow (at least on my G4 iBook). But it's not EndNote, and that means I can afford a legal copy of it. I wish Bookends were developed in something less Playskool that RealBasic, but that's the way it is. I agree. I regged Dominoes several years ago. The developer is friendly and adds games from time to time, and the interface is pretty nice. I don't know what this program offers in the way of ease of use, but it can't be much nicer that Dominoes approach which is simplicity itself.

Thanks for the tip. I can do without this software a while longer then. I was just about to pay for it when I read this. I get so tired of nagging little dialog boxes when I'm trying to get work done. I can just imagine needed to quickly look up a word and then having to dismiss that box, each and every time I need the application. What a PitA!

I see so many folks complaining because new point versions of soft require new point versions of the OS. Do any of you have ANY idea why that is?
