TwonkyMedia 4.4.3 (Mac OS X)

Works Great for Streaming Photos (to frames)

Because Kodak makes these cool EZ digital frames, which I received as a gift, I had to get the wireless streaming working (why would I do it the easy way via USB) and of course their conehead Kodak software only works over wifi for streaming with Windows. So after a call to Kodak tech support, they said hey try this, it's supposed to work, but we really don't know. So, I downloaded it and installed. No manual required. An easy web set up (in fact the whole server is web driven) was a no brainer, and after struggling through the crappy Kodak documentation to get the frame preferences set, it worked great. I'm going to buy the license even though Kodak should have provided this, but I'd rather have these photos changing dynamically from my computer than updating with a hook up to my Mac via USB, which I'd probably do maybe once a year. So this little piece of wonderware has made a so so product (the Kodak frame) awesome and cool. I haven't checked out the other media server capabilities because I have those handled via iTunes, Airtunes and ATV, but I recommend you try this software if one of the photo capability or one of the other (video and audio) capabilities is needed. So my rating is based on the photo part, but it couldn't be easier. One thing I'd like to see is direct streaming from iPhoto libraries--would make this a lot more useful, but I'm happy at the moment just to get this. if you guys are listening, please add iPhoto integration (it has iTunes integration, so I don't see why not....) TwonkyMedia 4.4.3 (Mac OS X)

Just about to try...would this stream to ATV?

I just downloaded this because Kodak recommended it for use with their EasyShare photoframes (wifi), but haven't started yet--in fact, the weird thing is the ap wasn't on VT until right after I downloaded it from the dev. But a different question on a different ap--streaming media to an Apple TV? The ATV does not stream radio, but it does synch with all the music/playlists in iTunes. Above, it states: "For client devices that do not directly support Internet radio, the TwonkyMedia acts as a proxy and translates Internet radio stations. For these clients each radio station is interpreted as one never-ending MP3 song that can be selected and played like a locally available piece of music." Does this mean you could tweak this to stream iTunes media to an Apple TV, or does Twonky stream separately (ie, not as an extension of iTunes, which is required for ATV)? [alert admin]

Quantum 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Maelstrom Still the #1 Astroids Game (Sorry, nice effort)

Most people probably don't know that the legendary (at least in 90s Mac world) Maelstrom was ported to OS X a few years back (after being a favorite and one of the first successful shareware games ever for the Mac--from Ambrosia, which is still around). That game at least took the graphics to a new level (though the graphics have actually been done better than that game, it is still wonderful in its simplicity). I'm not sure how it works in 10.5, but it still "rocked" (and it literally rocks with its soundtrack) in 10.4. However, it's biggest drawback is its small window, which this game at least does much better with. Remember, it came during the Mac Classic era. However, if you're an astroids fan, check this game out, but also check out the Maelstrom X, for some nostalgia if nothing else. [alert admin]

TimeMachineScheduler 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Is it possible to do 24-hour backups?

12 hours is better than hourly, but ideally I'd set Time Machine to back up when I'm asleep, once a day--mainly because I set my TM to backup over wireless to another machine's external drive over an 80211g connection (I suppose if I had 80211n it wouldn't be as bothersome). Sweet none the less. [alert admin]

WriteRoom 2.2 (Mac OS X)

hey, i gaucho, this ain't for you, but others dig writing this way

Hey, Mr. El i.gaucho: So I think it's great that you upgraded your review, but you still miss the point. WriteRoom is distraction free, feature-overload free, retro writing pleasure. My wife got this a while back and doesn't use anything else for writing. Even her online stuff, she drafts in WR. She is a switcher, and didn't even want to use Word on the Mac anymore. I dig this ap to, because it hasn't caused her or our young son a single problem. I think the developer is right, in that it delivers on its promise. Like 200%. It may be niche, but it's an excellent ap in its niche. I have a few other writer friends whom I have recommended this to (and for the PC guys I recommended they try that PC clone, can't remember the name or know whether it's as slick). At least two of our friends have fell in love with this too, and I'm not aware of any problems. If you need feature-rich distraction and all that, fire up Word. If you want a simple, fast and kind of cool retro experience, this is it. (Though my wife uses this, I use a different ap, which I recommend for more project oriented writing, and it has a similar full screen mode--Copywrite. Not quite as simple as this, but if you need to organize docs in anyway, I also recommend that. I don't write books or screenplays, but I have a lot of writing projects, and for that, I would recommend a look at that as well.). [alert admin]

VisualHub 1.23 (Mac OS X)

Great: Software to Make the Apple TV Worth It

This software is everything it's been complemented and well reviewed for. It's easy to use, with built in flexibility for advanced settings, and it's fast. For me, it's made the Apple TV a great product to own, whereas before I was sitting on the fence ready to buy a Mini for the same job (because iTunes can utilize almost any video codec and Apple TV cannot). That was the sole reason I was holding back on the Apple TV (well that and internet radio, but I think it's coming). However, VisualHub makes converting all my "other" video formats to H.264 ATV-compliant a breeze (much quicker than QuickTime), and with the batch processing it's even better. This is a great, focused application and well worth the $23 (or whatver that weird price is). If you don't want to be strapped to the iTunes store, but want an Apple TV, this program will make it easy (but I am also pretty sure that either Apple or third parties will bring other codecs to ATV soon, given all the hacking success that is going on now...) But for me, at this point, this is a lot cleaner than the hacks available so far. [alert admin]

Xtorrent 1.0 (39) (Mac OS X)

This Guy Needs to Listen to the Customer

This guy really needs to fix his support model. I have never seen so many complaints about one single developer, spread throughout the whole mac community, this guy is notorious. What's weird is a lot of people like his software, especially his UIs. But he obviously has no people skills and doesn't have any business sense, because he obviously doesn't understand that customer service IS PART OF THE PRODUCT. From what I've read about his over the last year, he could probably double his sales if he offered decent support. I am a registered user of one of his products, and also use Inquisitor. And I like this one, using the beta a lot. But I'm not gonna buy it. I love the UI, I love the built in search, the RSS. But the horror stories scare me (even though I never really need tech support), and I just can't support someone who doesn't value his customer base, and doesn't seem to care. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.6 (Mac OS X)

What's wrong with bforsberg_dotmac? First time in comments?

VLC is irreplacable, and this new version has got some great new features. Anyone know how to make VLC play legit copies of iTMS video? I'm sure this has been covered somewhere before, but VLC is so much more reliable than the QT Player (Pro), I'd prefer to use it. Also, Mr. bforsberg_dotmac, can you just leave one comment per point? We don't need 5 copies of the same comment/review. [alert admin]

SoftSkies 1.0 (Mac OS X)

No full demo--Can't even try it:(

I don't think you're going to sell much without a fully functional demo. The demo has exactly one of like 10 features, and to even see what the advanced features are, you have to buy before you see (therefore, this is NOT shareware). Why don't you (developer) just do a time-out on a full-feature demo? I saw this and just didn't even download it, even though it sounded really interesting (though pretty damn epensive for an iTunes visualizer and screensaver ($30). [alert admin]

MediaCentral 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Trial Period Ridiculous

It is almost impossible to evaluate this product with a 5 mnute demo session limitation. What kind of bonehead came up with this idea? Considering this is basically alpha quality at best, it is nuts that they ask for money up front without a decent trial period. I do appreciate the work and think the team developing this should be paid for their hard work, but they make it hard to invest in their work with this super limitation. The time limit is especially a problem because I am experiencing a few problems getting it working, and I can't even trouble shoot properly because I have to constantly restart the program within its 5 minute boundary. MediaCentral has a lot of potential and I hope to see it become more reliable and hopefully a bit faster. But that's to be expected of an Alpha or Beta release. The 5 minute evaluation period however should not be expected and because of that I would not recommend this to anyone, and cannot give it the 3 starts it probably would get if I could test it. Oh, Please!

Dude, grow up. Or at least relax. I doubt this kid is too worried about Apple. In fact, this may get him hired at Apple (like some other jail breakers:-) Anyway, Apple doesn't have anything to do with this site, nor do they have any right to tell anyone what they can do with their purchases. I guess you haven't heard how the Steves got started. Hacking phones, dude. Hacking pay phones. What goes around, comes…

TOTALLY AGREED! A step in the wrong direction...

One of the best things about this little ap has been zapped. I hate extra dock icons, especially for "helper" aps or utilities. The menu bar icon is all that is needed, why do this? Improved functionality to come? I doubt I want it if it means I've got to have an extra dock icon, which I probably won't use. I will stick with my current install, and man am I glad I read the…

Hao Li's attitude is unacceptable

The comments on Hao Li's attitude towards his customers is a little disconcerting since I am a paying customer, who was just considering buying the upgrade for Leopard. Given the fact his upgrade procedure is a near nightmare even when you own a current license, I'm just not sure I want to go through that again. I mean, everytime there is a Safari upgrade, you have to update Saft, and the process is a full…

must install as admin

You moron. Yes, that's the standard procedure for installing core system aps like this. The whole idea is that only the owner or the admin of the machine should be allow to install stuff. It has everything to do with security--maintaining your own security. It has nothing to do with violating security, if its your computer. Get a life you dimwit.

Nice but 30$

Yikes, this is steep. Did the price go up? I tried it a while ago, decided I wanted to purchase, and then saw the price. Was it always this expensive? Must be a cheaper alternative. Maybe?

New Safari 3 beta and Transparent Dock

Yes, this really sucks. I came looking for a newer version, but all I found was bad news. TransparentDock is almost better than having Safari 3. But not quite. What options are there? Some things I customized still work, like the dock sticking to the bottom right. But I can't see anything else that sticks. Yuck:-(

Here's something that might do it

Haven't tried this out yet, but I'm going to download: Cover Version 1.5 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25919). What I'm ultimately interested in though is getting this as a screen saver on an ATV. I rarely use the computer to view or listen to iTunes content anymore, except in the office.

Should be rebuilt as iTunes visualizer

Excellent idea, in fact I have always been amazed that no one has tried this. I suppose it could get tricky on longer songs, or songs with lots of lyrics. But with some good design, it could be cool. Anyone know how to do this?

No full demo--Can't even try it:(

This is very weird. I just saw my name on this comment, but I didn't write the comment (the original). I clicked on my name, and it linked to my post list, so someone has definitely got in as me. Sorry to the developer. I may complain about stuff, but it's usually not about money (a non functioning demo would bug me though).
