Apple AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 (Mac OS X)

extracting the full app

Browse the contents of airportutility.pkg and double-click on the "archive.pax.gz" file. It will drop a folder on the desktop called "Archive". Drop the files in that folder to their corresponding locations on the drive. Worked perfectly, and properly administers all 3 of my Airport Express base stations, cleaner and faster than Airport Admin Utility 4.2. It's a shame Apple doesn't offer this straight up. Can't get it to install in my G4 Powerbook. Only a non-descript "there were errors installing the software. Please try again" [alert admin]

HandBrake 0.7.0 (Mac OS X)

Multi processor systems

This software works great. I've used it to rip over 60 DVDs to .mp4 for playback on the iPod, including heavy use of the queue for ripping TV seasons with individual episode files. Every once in a while it won't recognize a title on on the DVD, and I'll have to cheat it with MacTheRipper (rip the title onto the HD and then convert), but other than that, flawless. The one issue I've come across is that on my G5 Quad, it is incapable of utilzing more than 220% of the processor capacity (out of a maximum of 400%). Is it not sending enough threads? what's going on? I initially thought it was because that was the max read speed for my DVD drive, so I ripped the VOB to the hard drive and tried again, but no increase in performance. It's frustrating to rip @ 70FPS in the quad, and see that I've got 40% of the processors unutilized. How can performance be improved? [alert admin]

SoundandLights_VI 1.0 (Mac OS X)

nothing to see here... move along...

what the program does: presents a black screen with an image of an old-fashioned electrical copper contact switch in the center. mousing over the handle and dragging down will generate a harsh electrical sound. that's it. everything. Now smell the burning sarcasm of the previous posters. [alert admin]

disagree

Actually, I've always felt that Quicktime does a pretty exceptional job scaling a relatively small clip to full screen. it automatically softens each frame slightly to reduce visual pixellation during playback. Sure, viewing a 320x176 clip full screen won't look great, but a 720x320 clip looks just as good as a DVD scaled to full screen. And Apple offers many movie trailers in even higher resolutions than that, as do many other quicktime content providers. Sorry,…

Interesting you mentioned that. I have tried ripping from disk, but it's only marginally faster (5%) if at all. Obviously, because there's a ton of processor capacity left idle when handbrake is encoding on the Quad, you can run multiple simultaneous encoding tasks. I have not tried encoding two Handbrake tasks at once. I have, however, tried a handbrake encoding task and an itunes video encoding task at the same time. here's what happened: Handbrake (alone):…

use ffmpeg for free

fact is, ffmpex fails to complete alot of tasks, and offers no support when your file just won't transcode.
