BlackBerry Desktop Manager 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Delayed for years and now 10.5 only

There's no good, technical reason why this long delayed software should suddenly arrive having no compatibility with 10.4.x, except that Apple wanted to force users to upgrade to Snow Leopard and thus extract a few more dollars. It's a customer unfriendly company. I don't mind paying more for quality when I make an originating purchase, but I want to run 10.4 so I can use Classic for certain things and Apple has become an annoying enterprise. I'd say, "Remember what the marketplace eventually did to Quark when they became too nettlesome." [alert admin]

The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)

If the product is as bad as pre sales then skip it

I see their software to sync iCal, etc., to Blackberry products gets among the worst reviews you'll find on this site for paid software. Nevertheless, I investigated the other product for Samsung phones on their website. There is no pre sales phone support, a clear warning sign of trouble. -- And to confirm this: Right up in the description on this versiontracker page is the publisher saying "whatever" your Samsung or HTC, etc., phone we can help you sync it. This is patent BS. If you go to the site there is an annoying popup, instead of a list, of supported Samsung phones. (It is far from "whatever" Samsung phone.) You need a list so you can easily cross tabulate the list of phones they support with what your cell phone provider offers in the way of phones. Checking them individually via a popup is a pain, particularly if you're considering different wireless providers and/or several brands of cell phones. Sometimes their popup uses incomplete model numbers, dropping of the initial letters of the product code. Sometimes they don't refer to the model number at all, but just use the vernacular name of the product. So we don't have any confusion on this point, here is the correct, complete information for a Samsung phone: "SGH-T919 Behold." Not "t919" or whatever their popup says. This makes a difference because when their site just says they support "Instinct," I have no assurance as to whether this would include the Instinct S30, a successor product. Remember I cannot be sure about this because they don't use complete product descriptions in their moronic popup. (The Behold example, for one.) -- If they can't get basic stuff like this correct or thought through on their website or offer pre sales phone support, I find it hard to accept that they can cope with the demands of writing stable software and delivering passable tech support after any sale. I think this is a company which deserves to be punished by the marketplace. I advise caution in buying their products. [alert admin]

NoobProof 1.2 (Mac OS X)

As comments suggest, I did email the developer

About what I consider some interface and documentation un-clarity. (It is aimed at newbies, right? You call that documentation?) Got a reply saying his time was tight and he would get back to me over the weekend in question...then nothing. I think it is appropriate, therefore, for people to post feedback or questions here about using the software. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.1.3.10 (Mac OS X)

Ambiguous version numbering

Makes me wonder what the code must be like. (Assuming this is not a versiontracker error of some sort.) [alert admin]

It just needs to be said

Harmless, I guess without trying it, and maybe not without humor, but this is for folks who just can't get enough Star Trek conventions. Also, there seems to be no 9.x version, which is strange if you think about it. [alert admin]

Hey, I have…

some ideas and I'm not even close to a genius: When I go to About Mozilla the version is listed as "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020824". Is something wrong with 1.1fc4, which the site I downloaded it from claimed? Get Info just returns "1.1". Are there not different flavors of 1.1? If you have to struggle to make something obvious, perhaps you should be writing IQ tests rather than software. Or, if I want to open many browser windows rather than tabs, what's so appallingly wrong with having them open at the first available slot at the top of my screen, and go down from there? As it is, they start below and keep cascading ever downward to the bottom, and when they get there they just shrink in size. If I close all the windows in an attempt to fix this, the first window I open will not start at the top. It will open where the last open window was. Comm. 4.79 and 4.8.0 handle this. (I don't like to move windows manually since they are set to stagger upon opening.) My version crashes without fail at an admittedly suspect chat room, but then so do Comm. 4.8.0 and IE 5.1.5. Even though promising Mozilla loads pages fast on my hardware, and I really do like tabs, I think 4.79 is still my first choice for now. [alert admin]

Netscape Communicator 4.8 (Mac OS 9)

4.8.0 on my…

G3 with 9.2.2 will not find the message boards under any yahoo news story. 4.8.0 does not work correctly at a site using volano chat, although the programmers at the site are evidently not exactly Mac literate. If 4.8.0 has any advantages, they are invisible to me, so 4.79 is preferable on my machine, even allowing for its occasional crashes. When the version number goes up, the software should be an improvement, or the stars go down. 4.79 or even Mozilla for me. [alert admin]

Delayed for years and now 10.5 only

I will ignore the first respondent. No, planned obsolescence is a long standing Apple strategy. It's similar to Bento, also not technically Apple software. Will only run on Leopard (and maybe Snow L., I haven't checked.) There is no good reason for this widespread practice except subtle or overt pressure put on software developers by Apple in order to extract system OS upgrade money from consumers. This Blackberry software has been in development for years. It makes no…

miro is trying to connect to google-analytics

Firefox does this on launch, too. I guess a lot of open source software has made deals to let google track all your IP number's searches. If I disallow the connection between Firefox and google then Firefox will not go to any url. Have not tried this with Miro. Also, I have often wondered what's to prevent LittleSnitch itself from gathering info or passwords. First, don't be evil. I'm not so sure.
