Solver for Excel 2008 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not Version 1.0 - This is Version 12.1!

To VT, this is not version 1.0 as you have it listed here, but in fact version 12.1. [alert admin]

HD Quick Look 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Something Better Than Nothing?

Quick Look can be a very useful function, but it's only as good as the plug-ins for it. In the case of this plug-in, it falls far short of the mark. As the first plug-in to provide a thumbnail for AVCHD movie files, it delivers a basic image. However, it goes no further. Whereas QuickTime movies in Quick Look are fully playable, and can be viewed at full resolution, and scaled up to full screen, this plug-in only shows a low-resolution thumbnail. Even in full screen view, you just get a big blocky version of the same thumbnail. Also, the thumbnail it displays is the first frame of video - which is not always useful for identifying a video clip. For functionality, this delivers the bare minimum, and to add insult they charge $7.99 for this. - Can't actually play video - just a still image - Thumbnails don't scale up - Only the first frame of video - Overpriced [alert admin]

USBShow 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Completely Useless

Even as a bare-bones image viewer, this is completely useless. I put pictures in the folder "MyShow", and it only shows the first one. Pressing keys, clicking the mouse, waiting... nothing will advance beyond the first image. Try the menus? Actually there's only one menu item besides "Quit": "Open". OK, try that, and, nothing! Beware, if you click on "Cancel", you will get the following error: "An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down." Indeed. FYI, I tried this on a Power Mac G5 running Tiger, and a Mac Pro running Leopard. Exactly same results. On paper, this is the simplest application - it has one function, and it completely fails to do it. Don't waste your time with it, let alone your money. [alert admin]

Interarchy 9.0 (Mac OS X)

Great application, but where are the updates; where is the developer/support?

I've been a long-time user of Interarchy since about version 3... The developer of this software up until version 8 (Peter N Lewis) was fantastic. Whenever I found bugs I would e-mail the developer and they would invariably try to fix them and often respond straight away to find out more details of the problem. The updates would be regular and thorough - usually eliminating problems quickly. For this, I remained loyal, knowing that the developer stood behind their product. However, with version 9, the application changed hands to a new developer (Nolobe). Whilst this has brought improvements to the product, I discovered several bugs (some of them serious crashing bugs) and e-mailed the developer/support about them. 3 months later, I haven't heard a single word from them, and there have been absolutely no updates to this application. This situation seriously brings into question the developer's commitment to the product, and to the actual feasibility of using it going forward. I'd say if you're interested in purchasing this, don't buy it until the developer shows some signs of supporting it. [alert admin]

PhotoGPSEditor 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Good Potential, Poor Interface

There's quite a latent demand for an application such as this, to add location metadata to photos. This application does actually seem to have the right functional ingredients to pull it off - import images, select a location using Google Maps, apply metadata. Unfortunately, the bad news is that this application fails in the user interface, which presents everything to you in a bafflingly haphazard manner. The impervious and unintuitive interface seems to contradict all logical notions of how one would expect this application to operate. The first puzzle for the user is how to even open your images. Go to the File menu, and the only enabled option you see is "Save Data". What am I saving? I haven't done anything yet! "Open" is permanently disabled. How about dragging some image files into the Pictures list? Nice try, but that does nothing either. No, you need to press "Load Pictures" in the bottom left of the window, and then navigate to your image files. Next up, you'd think you could navigate the map and specify the location you want to add to the current photo, right? Wrong. You can pan the map, but you cannot zoom it! Plus that's all you can do at this point anyway. In order to actually achieve anything, you must first press "Add Marker", which sets the location to 0,0. Only now can you pan AND zoom the map. However, if you think it's simply a case of panning and zooming the map, and then hitting a button to set the location, you'd be wrong again. In fact, you have to drag the red marker to the location on the map that you are trying to find. Each time you drag the marker, it redraws and re-centers the map. To me, this is the complete opposite of how this function should work. Typically, when people want to find a location on a map (real or virtual), and mark it, they pan/zoom the map, and once they've located their point of interest, put a marker on the map. Yes, you need to be able to finely adjust the point once you've placed it, but dragging the initial marker all the way from Africa is truly the craziest alternative you could choose. This is a useful utility to have, but the current interface for this application is both procedurally and visually unintuitive. I haven't even started to describe the perplexing array of buttons, fields and tabs that make up the middle portion of the window, or why on earth there are 2 different push-button styles. The fact is, the interface is nothing short of maddening. I would ask that the author of this application redesign the interface so that people can actually use it in an efficient and non life-shortening manner. Maybe then this application will live up to its potential. [alert admin]

Yahoo! Widget Engine 3.0 (Mac OS X)

3.0 is Broken

Used many versions of Konfabulator up to 2.1.1 and never had any problems. Installed 3.0, and... nothing! It appeared to launch - icon appeared in the menubar - but clicking on it does nothing. Further attempts to launch it were unsuccessful. Attempting to quit it from Activity Monitor failed, so I force quit it. Unfortunately 3.0 is completely non-functional for me. Uninstalled. Hey Yahoo, thanks for nothing! [alert admin]

Skype 1.0.0.49 (Mac OS X)

Can it work with a proxy?

I can use this without any problems behind a firewall at home on DSL. However, I can't get this to work at the office behind a corporate firewall and proxy. There are no visible proxy settings in the Skype Preferences. Is there some way to configure this to work with a proxy or is it not possible? Thanks. [alert admin]

ShowVolumeFragmentation 0.65 (Mac OS X)

UI Needs Work

Sorry, but even if this application is providing a useful function, the interface as it currently stands is really awful, and cannot be used by regular people. I would recommend to the developer that they seek professional assistance on the UI. It is not user-friendly, and does not look good by any means. [alert admin]

iView MediaPro 2.6.3 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Still not backwards compatible with 1.5.x

The latest update still isn't compatible with Catalogs created in iView MediaPro v1.5.7. On the plus side, a much-needed feature has finally materialised - the ability to edit captions in list, thumbnail, and full views without having to open the Info pane. Just click on the caption and edit it like you always could with filenames. I requested this feature more than a year ago and I'm glad they finally got round to implementing it - let's hope it doesn't take so long to fix backwards compatibility with v1.5.x Catalogs. Same Here

I also get exactly the same result after clicking on the trial button: big white rectangle with grey message box "Hotkey Remote activated" below. I also have Keyspan DMR installed. My intention was to try Remote Buddy to take control of the Apple Remote on the MacBook Pro, but leave the Keyspan Remote active with its own software. Is this not possible? I have no idea, because there's no documentation with the application. You can escape…

UI Needs Work

I would add that the text needs to be checked for spelling and grammar. The English in the application and documentation is far from adequate, containing many spelling and grammatical errors.
