Microsoft Office 2004 11.3 (Mac OS X)

stay away from MS software.

Installed MS Office and the 11.3 updater on a previously MS-free Mac. It broke items in the keychain, a Mail account, and printing. A few days after the install, Mail caused a kernel panic (it had never even crashed or stalled before. Ever.) Everything bad ever written about MS products in regards to breaking competitors' products is true. If you have a Mac that runs well and is stable, and if want to keep it that way, stay away from MS apps. [alert admin]

MOTU MachFive 1.08 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

reply...

Dear musicMMan, I don't carry a pager, mp3 player, palm etc.... MachFive is, imho, unusable on a 1GHz G4 with 768MB RAM, the dongle is just one issue, performance another, GUI another, documentation another, integration with DP4 another,...Word on the web is that the software was not developed by MOTU, but by a third party - it certainly doesn't match the (excellent) quality of DP4. Contacted MOTU after returning the software to the reseller, their support was very friendly. [alert admin]

MOTU MachFive 1.08 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Don't buy this.

If you use a laptop, DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE!!! It comes with a 'dongle', a hardware key for authorisation, to prevent software piracy. The key is about a third of the width of a 12" PowerBook, blue translucent plastic like the iMacs from 5 years ago - it sticks out like a sore thumb, damaging the USB port with a design like this is only a matter of time. The key is not mentioned on the MOTU website or the MachFive package. It causes MAJOR inconveniences - any time you start an app that supports Audio Units, you get prompted for the key, no matter if you plan to use the plug-in with this app or not. It defies the purpose of AUs - ease of use across the system. You have to carry the key around if you want to use the sampler. With this, MOTU makes using pirated apps MORE convenient than using a purchased copy. The plug-in as such is clearly a 1.0x release - on a 1024x768 monitor, you have to hide the dock, otherwise part of the UI is covered. Regular processor spikes (even after optimising buffer settings etc). The PowerBook took a clear hit in overall performance and startup times after installing this software. [alert admin]

Hey ima747! "Deleting…

everything that has MS written on it" of course includes IE5 itself, as well as Office and Outlook. Maybe you should read before you get insulting. [alert admin]

Try this experiment:…

delete everything (including extensions) that has "Microsoft" written on it from your harddrive, and watch the effect that has on the stability of your system and the performance of other applications. [alert admin]
