Also for Tiger

This page says it is for OS 10.5 only, but it installed on my Tiger system with the OS 10.4.11 update. Works too. [alert admin]

SerialMailer 5.3.6 (Mac OS X)

Good for teaching

This product helped me communicate with more than ninety students this past semester. I could send them individualized emails with feedback and grades for their work. How? SerialMailer not only lets you import groups from AddressBook, but it permits you to import tab-separated text files. I simply exported the relevant data from my FileMaker database and imported it into SerialMailer. SerialMailer lets you compose messages with fields from your database as well as conditional fields. The only drawback: no individual attacchments. You either send everyone the same attachment or you send no one an attachment. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 7.0 (Mac OS X)

Download manager and store layout

This version now features a download manager. Instead of download progress being marked in the middle of the toolbar where one sees what one's listening to, one sees a "downloads" item appear under the Store. And individual items (or all) can be paused. Much better than the old system. The new layout of the store is also growing on me. Less crowded, less busy. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 7.0 (Mac OS X)

(1) speed; (2) podcasts (3) look

(1) Is somewhat slower on my G4 iBook. But I guess I'm not their primary concern. (2) Why can't we have separate settings for each podcast? Some I want to download every episode. Some I just want to know about, and some I want to download the newest one only when I happen to turn on iTunes. This seems pretty basic. (3) Overall look is good, but I don't like how I am now unable to fold the subfolders for the ITunes store into one main folder. (Subfolders are shopping cart and the purchased playlist.( [alert admin]

EndNote X (Mac OS X)

Skeptical

I liked this way back in version 4, but whenever anything is wrong with the product, they wait a year for the fix, give it a new version number, and charge another $90.--. And as another person here notes: they do this almost every year. I gave up around version 7 and went to Bookends. [alert admin]

Tinderbox 3.5.3 (Mac OS X)

One cause of misunderstandings about upgrade fee

The Tinderbox website uses an unfortunate choice of words to advertise how to upgrade. Instead of calling it an upgrade, it says "renew Tinderbox". In one sense, this is honest. You don't pay by the version number, but for a period of free updates. On the other hand, "renew" suggests that your license can expire. Of course, the website also contains a link that explains what they mean by renew, but by this point certain associations have already been awoken in the user. This problem is symptomatic of another issue: Tinderbox's documentation is nowhere near adequate. With this limitation, Tinderbox will always remain something of a niche product, and its updates will continue to be expensive. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.5 beta 1 (Mac OS X)

Looks good, but I’m weary of it.

I used to do everything in this browser (have a family pack license), but it suffered from so many stability issues over the past couple years that I got used to working with Safari. The paid upgrade to version 5 fell short of its promise very soon after its release, and I’m not sure readjusting to OmniWeb again is worth the trouble, even if it does have a few unique features. The other user in my family, my son, likes Firefox. [alert admin]

Speed Download 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Needs Keychain integration

You can save your passwords in Speed Download, but it would be a lot more convenient if it used the Keychain. [alert admin]

Saft 8.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Problem with fullscreen mode on G4 iBook

A lot of web pages do not render properly in full screen mode on my G4iBook. The top part slips out of view, or centered web pages slide over to the right, partly out of view. This does not happen to these sites in Opera or DEVONthink Pro when in fullscreen. I don't know if that's a problem with Saft or with Safari, but it's a problem. I've reported this to the developer, but he has not reproduced it on his own computer. I can't comment on the other features. OS 10.4.6 on 1.2 GHz G4 12" iBook with 1.25 GB RAM [alert admin]

Default Folder X 3.0 (Mac OS X)

How did we get from 2.5b4 to 3.0?

Well, at least 2.0.4 is still available for download from their website, so I guess they're not twisting my arm. And this is the first upgrade fee since the switch to OS X at the beginning of the decade (or whenever that was). By the way, I've found 2.5b's (now 3.0's) ability to enter Spotlight commands when saving files very useful. [alert admin]

Version?

Perhaps you downloaded the wrong version? The newest one is Leopard only, but there is a link above for the older version too.

Still not ready...

Apropos GUI, their screenshots are only useful for people with big screens, not little ones on iBooks or MacBooks. Different thing, I know, but it points to some weaknesses in their ability to consider how other people might see their product.

iKey News

I'm a Tiger user who has given up on iKey because of its bugginess. I'm disappointed that it has seen no updates to improve stability. The developers seem to have focused on expanding its feature-set without improving its quality. If this complaint is news to the developer, it is because my interactions were never fruitful. The main guy who deals with the public is very eager to please, but the referrals I got to the coder…

How doesn't it play nice?

You say Chax doesn't play nice with other apps, but you do not say which apps you mean or what problems you had.

Needs to be Universal

That's harsh. Maybe it does, but that is no basis for two stars, not for this old gem, whose developer keeps updating it and never charging a penny for improvements. Why not just add a comment instead?

Wrong download version

Yep. Same here. The zip file says version 3, but inside is another story: the old version. I guess that's one of the potential pitfalls of late-night releases. Let 'em sleep and get some coffee and it will be ready in the morning.

But still no footnotes

Sente continues to improve, but it still won't do footnotes, so it is unsuitable for my work in history.

hqx

hqx should be self-extracting. Rating this app a 1 for not handling this old format is unfair, especially for a freeware app. You should have simply added a comment.

Good: clippings. Bad: ugly stuff

Yeah, the gigantic toolbar that can't be made smaller or changed is a step backwards over the one they had. I don't mind change. I just want small to be an option.

Why the hate?

This is freeware, opensource, and a solid application on other platforms. Why so much hate? If you're hoping it will get better, this is not the way to encourage development.
