MB Free Zodiac Signs Software 1.25 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
will it scare away the monsters from under my bed, repel vampires and tell me how many pixies are in the bottom of my garden? ;-) [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0.3b (Mac OS X)
I've not had a single crash, and Safari still talks to Mail for me. It certainly seems snappier than Safari 2, although I've no way of quantifying that. It's just a feeling. One major improvement seems to be in the area of streaming and multimedia content. Previously I had to use Opera to access certain websites for viewing live sports scores and to listen to streamed commentary on the games. This version of Safari works flawlessly in that area, where in v2 I would definitely have considered those functions broken, particularly on certain content-heavy sites. On the wish list, I'd love to be able to turn off link-underlining, which seems very old-fashioned and unnecessary to me these days, in the preferences. Safari is about the only browser I can think of in which it's not possible to do so (and never has been). Please, Apple, isn't it about time? ;-) On the whole, Safari 3 is working like a dream for me. Fast, stable and functional on all of the website I've visited so far. [alert admin]

Safari Enhancer 3.3.1 (Mac OS X)
Although this version isn't technically able to work with 3.0.3 beta, I tried it out for removing underlines from links. The underlining was driving me CRAZY, and if anyone from Apple reads this, please add the ability to get rid of underlining in the preferences. It worked fine. Kudos. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office Open XML Converter 0.1 (Mac OS X)
Sadly for me, this doesn't seem to work at all on my computer. I get an error message every time I try to convert a file. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to go into automatic "slag off on Microsoft mode". After all, it's an early beta. If the next update for this doesn't work, however ... ;-) [alert admin]

Color2Gray for InDesign 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Converting a colour image to grey for professional printing is not quite the same as only printing the black plate. While this will certainly be useful for printing proof copies, I tend to think it would be much better to use Photoshop, together with a professional plugin such as theimagingfactory's ConvertToBW Pro. This gives you much more control over the delicate balance required to produce a professional greyscale image from a colour one. I'm not trying to denigrate the author of this software. Kudos for doing the work. I do think, however, that this solution will appeal more to "home" users of InDesign than professional ones. [alert admin]

ABC Radio Widget 2.1 (Mac OS X)
I have been waiting for someone to come up with this widget. I've had the BBC equivalent running for weeks now. Installed quickly and easily (and thanks to VT I know what the "phone home" was about), loaded fast. Simple and functional. Come on the cricket season! [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.5 beta 1 (Mac OS X)
I've tried OmniWeb a few times, and simply not been terribly impressed, especially with its speed. All that has changed with 5.5b1. I'd recommend this for a try. OK, so it costs money, but the way I'm feeling now I'm almost prepared to lay out the cash. Almost ... [alert admin]

Spell Catcher X 10.2.2 (Mac OS X)
I use a variety of software applications, ranging from typesetting and word-processing, to email, to spreadsheets and databases. Maintaining consistency of spellings across all of these types of apps is critical, but multiple user dictionaries prove to be a pain in the proverbial. Spell Catcher has solved that problem for me, and does its job well and in the background. It's fast, and the dictionaries seem to be very comprehensive so far. The task I'm working on has some pretty technical medical terminology, and the British English medical dictionary is handling it really well. And the one time I've had to contact the developer (an educational pricing query), not only did he contact me very quickly indeed with a very satisfactory answer, but he also apologised for the time it took to reply! I'm impressed, and I recommend Spell Catcher with no reservations. [alert admin]

Why in the heck should you buy 10.3? You shouldn't. You should buy 10.4, or even wait until 10.5. Things have moved on a lot since 10.2. I'm not being sarcastic. Really, I think you'd enjoy the new OS X.

Well, I for one am pleased to see a grievance aired with a sense of humor, rather than the usual half-baked, half-cocked, rude whining of which we see so much around here. Encore!

In my case, I still can't get past the message telling me PCC won't work on my system. I'll try reinstalling and trashing prefs and see if that works.

*Red face* When I say I've been using DBoost and Renicer, I don't mean together. I've been using them alternately to try them out. And apologies to the developer. The modification date on the manual is actually 1 March 2003. Still not good, but better than 2002.
