Version 1.8 corrects the previous problem of maxing out the CPU at idle. Also, V1.7 would only keep me connected thru my NAT configured Airport firewall for 2 minutes tops. Now with 1.8 I have zero dropout issues - last call was 30 uninterrupted minutes. Excellent job with the major bug fixes. This is now my tool for international calls to family. [alert admin]

Mac2Phone 1.7 (Mac OS X)
I'm noticing that this 'softphone,' while running in the background online, takes a great deal of CPU usage (>85%) on a fast G4 PB. Thus the fans kick on and stay on. That can't be tolerated for an app that I would like to leave 'on' by default. Seems like it still needs work. Good start though. [alert admin]

Freenet Controller 1.0 (Mac OS X)
available from SourceForge, I wonder if it will become a fink installable package. I'd be more comfortable from a Unix standpoint if the app were contained in /sw, a-la Fink. The concept itself (freenet) seems like an excellent idea. [alert admin]

MencoderOSX 0.9rc2b2 (Mac OS X)
and very compact result using mpeg4/divx4 and preserving ac3 audio. It would be nice to have a list of all the command options/flags. Also, the status message for "duplicate frames" (remainder from synch error?) tends to fill up the terminal buffer fast. A historical note: the cause of the synch misery today goes back to the analog folks (me!) who set the (Color) NTSC Standard in 1953. B&W TV used to have an integer frame rate of 30fps. When Color was defined in 1953, the rate was dropped to 59.94/2 fps so that the "new" color modulation would not fall upon the audio carrier (backwards compatibility was enforced). Nice that Devera's software can compensate for this 50-year-old issue! [alert admin]

Epson Stylus C80 1.3aD (Mac OS X)
1.3aD driver with no hitch - don't notice any difference in function or interface. I am disappointed that I still don't have the "manual-duplex" printing option which has always been available in the OS9 driver. This would allow me to re-insert a document to make a double-sided print. [alert admin]

DSBRTuner 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
1.0.1 works great - Thanks PTH. There is still distorted audio from the receiver from stations with high FM deviation - but if you listen to the 88-92MHz range Public stations which have lower deviation levels, the sound is okay. This is probably a D-link hardware design flaw (RX discrininator), maybe fixed in later builds.... For Bob & others - if you hear massive buzz and static on what should be strong FM stations - a snap-on type ferrite phone line filter (like those used in DSL installs) will help if it is placed on the USB cord at the receiver end. Dantz Retrospect 5.0b (Mac OS X)
fine in OS10.1.3, but refuses to make backup sets over network volumes, even when I set the permissions wide open. Gives Error -5000 'No Permission' error even with chmod777 on the network volume. Still not ready for prime time. [alert admin]

folding@home client 2.19 (Mac OS X)
obviously worthy of spare processor cycles. Code critique: The terminal version gives no indication of the frame being worked on, regardless of the setting for the verbosity flag. The GUI version 2.19a does not give a clear indication of status when it is downloading a work unit or uploading a result, and whether the transaction is complete (I lost a WU that way). The S@H client is the gold standard for distributed computing UI, from what I have seen. This code needs a little more UI work. If it had Altivec calls - wouldn't that be something! (Apple?) DSBRTuner 0.8 (Mac OS X)
X 10.1 version, I need to trash the user prefs in the /lib/prefs directory, or the program crashes on my Dual-USB iBook with Griffin iMic. Also, comment on the DSB-R100 Hardware: it needed a ferrite toroid to keep the USB conducted emissions out of the tuner, and it has distorted audio on stations with higher FM deviation. D-Link could have done better for 50 cents extra components. NICE SOFTWARE by PTH though. Just need to resolve the prefs problem. [alert admin]
