MPlayer 1.0rc1 (Mac OS X)

Continues to crash

This program still crashes upon start-up on my iBook G3. I am forced to use a very much older version, because subsequent updates have failed to address this. Also, I can't find anywhere to send a crash log so that someone can figure it out. This has been one of my most used programs over the years, and it makes me quite frustrated to be unable to use the most recent releases. [alert admin]

MPlayer OS X 1.0pre8rc5 (Mac OS X)

Still doesn't work

It still doesn't work on my G3 iBook. This time there's not even an error message. I open a file, and simply nothing happens. No crash report, no attempt to load, nothing at all happens. If necessary I can test if there's someone I can get in touch with. I'm not a programmer, but I can at least check and see if any given version of MPlayer thrown at me works. [alert admin]

MPlayer OS X 1.0pre8rc5 (Mac OS X)

Failure to Launch

This program is one of my most frequently used programs. I would be lost without it. Unfortunately, this most recent release is completely useless as it is. I have a G3 iBook, which plays videos just fine under normal circumstances, so speed is not the issue here. The program simply doesn't play anything. Watching how MPlayer works, it normally loads up the binary as a second application to play video. I can only guess it isn't working. I've seen some programmers run into problems with G3's and Tiger, because there is some sort of option in the XCode that enables AltiVec support, and appears to get confused if it encounters G3 there. I'm not a programmer, so I can't be more specific. This is simply what I have heard from people who are programmers, and have seen similar problems in other programs. Perhaps this is the case. If it is, then it should be a simple fix for the people who bring us MPlayer. The problem is, right now, this program doesn't work for a chunk of people. [alert admin]

iComic 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Beach Ball of Doom

This program has been one of my favorites for a long time. It saddens me that there has been no signifigant updates in forever. iComic is one of my most often crashing programs. It seems to get confused a lot, and simply shuts down. The spinning beach ball is quite annoying, too. That being said, one can't blame the program for plug-ins breaking. The comic sites change their code from time to time. iComic does have a very good feedback group on Yahoo! where coders often fix plug-ins that break as soon as someone mentions it. I've never had to wait too long for a plug-in to be fixed. My biggest complaint about iComic is the frequent and often unexplained crashing. I don't like widgets, so I will not be using iComic 4. I still hope for an update to iComic 3 one day. I still love this program, tempermental as it can be, and don't see myself switching any time soon. You simply can't beat the price. [alert admin]

iJournal 1.77 (Mac OS X)

User Icons!

The new versions have added some interesting new features. The ability to see the user icon I am going to use is a favorite of mine. The only drawback to this is it can take several seconds to load them all. If you are on a slower connection, this feature may not be the greatest for you... especially if you have a large quantity of icons. I do not see a preference option to disable this, unfortunately. (Perhaps a feature for the next release?) It will automatically detect what you're currently playing on iTunes, which saves you the trouble of having to type in the song name and artist. If you don't want it to show the song you had playing, just switch to another song and hit the button beside the Music field. It will update to the song playing at that time. Since I do not own an Intel mac, I can't say much about how well it works on that side of things, however on my G3 iBook it works very well. It gives you easy access to just about everything you'd ever need. Also, you can't beat the price. I really like this program and I don't know what I'd do without it. [alert admin]

WeatherPop Advance 2.3 (Mac OS X)

Great and Small

This may not be a fully functional desktop weather station, but it does have a certian charm about it. It can be tempermental at times. I like having the temperature in my menu bar, with a little icon giving me an idea what its doing outside. I like being able to click on it, and seeing a drop-down menu of the current conditions, along with a brief five-day outlook. This program is very simple and easy to use. It may not be feature-ridden, but it works wonderfully. [alert admin]

Synergy 2.5 (Mac OS X)

I love this thing

Whenever I quit synergy, I feel helpless when music is playing. I have become so used to Command-Space to make things go, that when it isn't there... I get sad. That being said, I do have one concern. The only thing that would make it better is if a way was found to help Synergy not become so easily dragged down. That is to say, when there is a lot of CPU activity going on, and a track changes, Synergy occasionally locks up for a time ranging from a few seconds to a minute or more. I get a spinning beach ball if I hover over the Synergy icon in the menu bar, and keyboard shortcuts seem to become queued. Such as, the commands will take place after Synergy "catches up" with what's going on. (This sometimes makes it lock up again, trying to keep up.) This isn't a daily occurance by any means. Alarm Clock 2.2.3 (Mac OS X)

Awesome

I love this little program. It sits there in my menu bar, and wakes me up when I need it to. I've tried a few other little alarm clock apps, but this one has been the most consistant with actually going off. I've only had a few issues with it so far, but all have been fixed in previous versions thus. The "Easy Wake" option is very nice, giving a gradual volume increase with the alarm sound. I can sleep easier knowing there is a reliable alarm waiting to force me out of bed, playing whatever I want to hear first thing in the morning. [alert admin]

RockNES 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Older Versions

It recommends those with slower computers stick with the older versions of this programs, but for those who do not have the older versions anymore and still have slower computers, there does not appear to be a way to obtain the older versions via the RockNES website. This would be useful. [alert admin]

Still doesn't work

Alright, the problem I think began this way. When I put in the new verison, it asked if I wanted to delete my old preferences. I did that. For some reason, it did not register my processor has no AltiVec support. I reset the preferences to default, and restarted. It told me my processor did not support AltiVec, and that it would be disabled. The problem is, now, I…

Failure to Launch

It should be noted the "incompatible cpu-subtype" error is exactly what I have heard from happening in other programs, where there is a default Tiger option setting during compiling that assumes G4 or better. There must be a way to change that setting, because the other programs (ScummVM was one I can remember.) work now on my G3.

Useless on a G3

I, too, was happy to see the "no altivec" annoyance warning go away, but I was sadly disappointed by the complete and total lack of anything working. Adding a file to the playlist made the program crash, and repeated attempts to make it play SOMETHING failed. It is sad this program has become such a nuisance, lately.

Just one teeny suggestion...

I honestly don't remember doing anything special. I just did what the instructions said and it worked. Sometimes GreatestJournal is slow and it might have timed out, I really can't say for certain.

Incredible - It solved my Apple iSync 2.0 problem in no time!

I had the same problem with my father's iBook. He had deleted iChat, but with Pacifist I was able to retreive it. Awesome. ^^

oddly enough...

Unfortunately, while xJournal looks nice, it only works on LiveJournal and no others. I use GreatestJournal -and- LiveJournal, so really its quite useless for my purposes. Phoenix, on the other hand, should be perfect for someone like me.

Bad Luck

I don't know if I'm just doing something wrong, but the linux unace program wouldn't work for me, WinAce itself gets illegal instruction errors any time I've tried to run it, and the command line version claims the ace files I need uncompressed are unknown. Overall, I'm having terrible luck, and all I want is a few files decompressed.
