LaunchBar 4.1 beta 3 (Mac OS X)
I've been using LaunchBar for about 5 month now, starting on a PowerBook G4 1,25 GHz switching to my all new MBP 2.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I never encountered any speed problems. Responses on my PB have been noticeable faster with beta 3. Even on heavy load LaunchBar reacts to commands. Also there have never been crashes neither on my PB nor on my MBP (stable universal binary at least in my very own experiences). To be honest this is on of thus rarely seen apps I can't live without anymore. I love direct search engine input and spotlight support. All I need i is just a few clicks ahead. I guess it could even be faster with better adapted spotlight support. Can't wait for final version 4. [alert admin]

Free focused scroll 0.4 (Mac OS X)
Seems promising, though I can't get two finger scrolling to work, whatever I try. The trackpad doesn't recognize tabs fast enough. It's more often necessary to re-tab as one would like it for smooth working. The scrolling area works fine, it just would be nice to have it even faster scrolling. The "calibrate" button in the advanced group doesn't work. The most important things to fix are reliable tab recognition and two finger scrolling. As long as this isn't done this is a no go. Hopefully the fffscroll team will release updates in near future, since ffscroll merges the features if sidetrack with the two finger scrolling support of isroll2. [alert admin]

Desktop Movie Player 2.2 (Mac OS X)
is possible with MPlayer, too. Add all .vob files (without menu files) to MPlayers Playlist and press play. That's it. (Maybe works with Desktop Movie Player, too - have not tried this app yet.) And sorry for this two post instead of one. [alert admin]

Desktop Movie Player 2.2 (Mac OS X)
at less cpu usage. Preferences --> Video as backround. Every Movie is played behind Desktop icons - same as Desktop Movie Player does, but more supported input formats, perhaps. [alert admin]

VCDGear 1.76 (Mac OS X)
if you want to convert vcd's to mpg use do this: (from vcdgear readme) Extract the zip file. Open The Folder and rename VCDGear1_76 to VCDGear. Now open Toast and make a cd copy of your vcd cd. Save this copy to the same folder that contains the VCDGear Unix file. Rename the *.toast to *.bin while * means the name of the file. But you need to use the extension bin instead of toast. Now open the terminal and type cd (and a space), drag the folder containing VCDGear and the *.bin file to the open terminal window. Now you should see <your host>:~/the dir were the folder is located Now type this: ./VCDGear -bin2mpg *.bin newmpgfile.mpg. Use the name of your vcd.bin instead of *.bin. You'll get a mpg file called newmpgfile.mpg, that will even play in Quicktime. stupbi [alert admin]

Intego VirusBarrier X Virus Defs April (Mac OS X)
Well, i'm not the white knight to save integos soul, though i can't share the opinion of other commentators around here. I'm a former Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall user. After some testing reviews of macwelt (german pendant to macworld) i decieded to give intego a try. Nortons firewall gave me to little options for special configurations and it took me a lot of clicks just to enable and disable the firewall. NetBarrier is quite the opposite. Easy to use, exspecially with menu integration for fast access to all options. The firewall is very effective too, tested it intensively at different intrusion testing websites and got always a "very secure" response. So i run Netbarrier and Norton AntiVirus simultanously for a while, till i decided to give VirusBarrier a chance, too. At first sight, the applications confused me, and gave me the feeling of beeing not really powerful. So i trashed the demo file. After 3 Month and a note of Norton about my virus definitions contract beeing out of date i installed it again and took a closer look. This app is indeed powerful. It runs faster then norton and finds all the same virus in very faster scaning time. The mail integration works even better, as i got (correct) warnings from VirusBarrier, where norton stood silent. I'm running NetBarrier and VirusBarrier together since 4 month and I'm really happy. NetUpdate works fine too, even with NetBarrier having closed almost all ports. (Ok, i guess the port number for netupdate is open by default, anyway it's easy to do the same with any other firewall) To draw a conclusion: I think intego's apps are worth a try. They work fine, stable fast and secure. BTW: Of course it's not the best idea to push a proof of concept into range of a virus, where this is not true. But there are different people managing the press releases and programing the apps. Integos apps are a good peace of software, so think twice before you blame. Oh, and no I'm not a programer if Intego, i just hate people who think the know while the don't present just one single fact for proofing their postings. stüpbi [alert admin]
