Bento 2.0v2 (Mac OS X)
Rave Reviews? Check out the dates of those reviews!
I have the first version of Bento, and I bought it based on the reviews and my own use of the trial version. I bought it in June or July 2008. I gave feedback they requested, and I waited anxiously for the new, improved version at a reasonable upgrade price. Now, finally, comes Bento 2. Take a close look at the website for Bento 2.0v2, and check out those so-called "rave reviews" they're bragging about. Look at the dates of those reviews. Those are for the first Bento, not the new one. Show me a rave review with a September or October '08 date on it! Go read the Bento Forum if you want to see how many people got hooked into believing they were helping to make the product better. We were, but now they want us to pay for the ideas we shared with them. Good bye, Bento. Good bye FileMaker. [alert admin]

I bought Bento 1 this summer. I spent hours, days, weeks, months working with it and giving requested feedback so that FileMaker could make improvements -- or promises of improvements. They even asked customers to send in their databases. I'm glad I did not send mine. Nice job, FileMaker. You've worked very hard and succeeded in alienating your Bento users prior to the new Bento version. Improved colors and cut/paste features? Give me a break. Who cares! You want another $50 for this? If you're buying this new version of Bento, prepare to get screwed with the next "new, improved" version -- or better, yet, prepare to never see another improvement. Either scenario is possible. Save your money. It's not worth the lousy service you will get. [alert admin]

jBidWatcher 1.0 (Mac OS X)
What a fantastic bidding tool JBidWatcher is! You almost hate to rave about it, knowing others may start using it and outbid you! I'm amazed at how many times I've seen people using eBay's maximum bid feature, only to drive the price of an auction straight up in its first day simply because of an automatic bid battle. Haven't they ever played cards? I watched someone outbid me a couple of days into an auction on an item I really wanted. I waited them out, started researching strategies, found this great app., and tried it out on a couple of other auctions. On the last hour of the auction I wanted most, I changed my snipe time to 10 seconds with the highest amount I was willing to pay. I held my breath, kept my eBay bid at its "losing" level from 2 days before, and watched the final 15 minutes tick by like the final seconds in a race. I won! I'll bet the other bidder was in shock! (I owe a donation for this great app.! Who cares about searching. The bidding power is incredible!) [alert admin]

Lightning Bugz Screensaver 1.2.3 (Mac OS X)
Camping without the mosquitoes! ![]()

I really like this simple screen saver. A couple of the earlier reviews led me to pass this one up the first time I saw it listed, but I downloaded it later after visiting the Skyrocket Software web site. It may not be for everyone, but I like the graphics, including the visible bugs, the options for quantity and random lights, and especially the cricket soundtrack. It's like camping out at night, but without the humidity and the mosquitoes! [alert admin]

iKaleid 16082005 (Mac OS X)
I love this screen saver! I also like being able to customize the view, colors, and speed of it. Tip: If you tend to get vertigo, don't choose the fast rotation speed! It's a beautiful screen saver--mesmerizing! [alert admin]

OD4Contact 2.5.3 (Mac OS X)

I've been using OD4Contact to manage student information and parent contact documentation for almost a year now. I'm very visual, so I appreciate the way it is formatted. Because I am in a "continuous progress" district, and my team rotates groups of student between 4 teachers, I have a home room, a math class, and a communications class (lang. arts and remaining subjects). With each group having 20 to 26 students, each teacher sees around 60 students a day and throughout the year. That's a lot of record keeping. Most of these students remain with us from Kg. through 2nd grade, so a contact management program like OD4Contact is very practical. Even though the fields for entering information are geared more to business management, I simply choose the most important information I need and place it in the data base fields that are similar or in the ones that will place the information where it is most visible on screen and when printed out. Generally, I need to be able to enter the student's name, ID#, date of birth, the parent or guardian to contact, where they can be reached, and the dates and summaries of each contact throughout the year. Since this all gets turned in at the end of the year, OD4Contact's visually-pleasing and easy to read format are an advantage. Record keeping can be tedious and frustrating. Getting to know new software can also be tedious and frustrating, and updates in any software program can come with bugs to be worked out. Just read through the "user discussions forums" of some operating systems and software programs. My own experience has been that throughout the year with OD4Contact, the people of Objective Decision have replied within 24 hours or less to my crash reports and emails sent directly to them with a genuine effort to work through any problems I may have, whether they are "bug-related" or just user error on my part. Sometimes it's a matter of understanding each other, too. I became very frustrated when version 2.5 was first released because I tried to exchange my license key, which was not the right procedure, and when I tried to purchase the update with its new license key, I couldn't get the program to recognize me as a the owner of a previous license, which would allow me to buy the update at an adjusted price. After many tries that failed, I sent the company an email expressing my frustration. I'm sure they felt just as frustrated with me. I kept checking back and rereading their product information, though, because I really didn't want to start all over with some other program. Within 2 or 3 days, I read that a bug had been fixed to get the program to recognize owners of earlier versions and that the instructions for updating and exchanging license keys had been clarified. I tried the update again, and soon OD4Contact was up and running again. Until the day comes that my district chooses a program or develops one that helps its teachers manage student information and parent contacts, I'll stick with OD4Contact. That's not because it's the only contact management program I know; it's the best one I know. Susan S. [alert admin]

Many of us bought Bento this summer, gave feedback requested towards making a better Bento product, only to be royally screwed when the new Bento was released now. No credit at all? Shame on you, FileMaker! I will not shell out even another $20 for your Bento 2 with new, improved colors and cut/paste features. Big deal. More like big rip-off. With service like this, your only hope is…

I should have also mentioned how much I like being able to put my contacts into groups and subgroups with different labels and color-coding. It may seem like a small detail, but it has been very helpful. I can view my contacts by subject, grade level, or even by year. I can also attach/link documents or emails to my contacts, so I include staff members that I work with in my address…
