BurnAgain FS 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Wow, multiple burns to a data DVD without a confusing mishmash of multi-session volumes! I tested BurnAgain FS on a MacBook Pro using HP 4X DVD+RW media, it worked perfectly. The documentation is somewhat sparse, but you will figure it out, it's really not all that complicated. One point that bears repeating: while your DVD will appear to look/behave like a normal drive volume, unlike with a drive, deleted or changed files cannot be actually overwritten and continue to take up space. The only way to reclaim this space is to erase the disc and start over. In most manners of use, eg archiving photos, you will be sequentially adding files, so tthis will be of little consequence. In demo mode, BurnAgain FS allows 20 burns without a time limitation, which is more than enough for you to determine if this program is useful to you. [alert admin]

Split&Concat 2.5 (Mac OS X)
Works Fine on Intel Mac Running Leopard
Split & Concat 2.5 appears to work fine on my intel mac running leopard, I tested it by splitting a 1.6 GB toast file into 100 MB parts. I did notice that when concatenating back, the custom icon was lost but otherwise the file was ok. This program is so intuitive to use, I didn't bother reading any of the documentation. One tip I will pass along is to put the file you will be splitting in a folder by itself, likewise when concatenating, put all the parts in a folder together. This is a very useful utility. TinyCal 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)
The usage tip: Configure TinyCal to show two months (or more) in horizontal layout. This way there'll be adequate width at the bottom to show calendar events without truncating. The caveat: If you're running TinyCal in demo mode and then get a license code, you'll currently be completely flumoxed as to how to enter it. The solution is to log out (or restart), then launch TinyCal and it will be self-evident. [alert admin]

A Menu Bar Calendar... and More ![]()

TinyCal starts out by giving you a discrete menu bar icon that, when clicked, spawns a tear-off calendar which can be left in place or moved wherever you'd like, and can be variously configured viz size, number of months show, orientation, etc. Very nice. But wait, there's more. TinyCal syncs automatically with Google Calendar, events created with Googled are mirrored on TinyCal and vice versa. Extremely nice. But wait, there's more. If you use a BlackBerry, iPhone or other advanced smart phone with a data plan, install Google Sync and you'll have three-way continuous calendar sync between your mobile device, Google Calendar and your Mac. Superb. The only thing left out of the mix, obviously, is Apple's iCal. Hopefully, the developer will add this in the future. [alert admin]

InsomniaX 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Insomnia ver 1.3.3 is now current
As of 2008-03-09, versiontracker was still showing Insomnia ver 1.3.2 as current with a download link for same. Actually ver 1.3.3 is current, be sure you download this from the website or thru the check for updates feature. Ver 1.3.3 works with OSX 10.5.2 on my macbook pro. Regarding overheating with the lid closed, according to apple tech support, macbooks and macbook pro's have thermal protection. But it's a sensible idea to turn off the built-in screen before running with the lid closed, obviously. If you use Insomnia, please consider making a reasonable donation. Development of utilities like this should be encouraged -- and rewarded. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.1.4 (Mac OS X)
While Leapard users are waiting (im)patiently for SuperDuper ver 2.5 to be released, be aware that existing functionality built into Disk Utility allows you to clone a volume to a sparse image file and restore from same. Two important details to be aware of: (1) If you are archiving your HD, you must boot from either another volume or your Leopard DVD. (2) When restoring to your HD, of course you must be booted as per the above; and also you must first erase the destination volume. Disk Utility appears to allow an integrated erase/restore operation, but there's a bug here. Missing, of course, will be SuperDuper's ability to create a bootable clone, a customizable clone, a smart-updateable clone, etc. [alert admin]

Typewriter Keyboard 3.8 (Mac OS X)
I installed an earlier version of Typewriter Keyboard on my PowerBook G4, and while it worked as described, it hogged an inordinate amount of CPU time, so I rarely used it. After reading the posting by chillywilly5280, I tried Keyclick on my MacBook Pro, and can confirm that when idle it uses 0.0 per cent CPU, in use typically 0.1 per cent, and even if you peck away rapidly at your keyboard, CPU use peaks at 0.3 per cent. There's a 21-day trial period, after which you have to shell out $5.00. [alert admin]

VisualHub 1.24 (Mac OS X)
This software is truly awesome, converting the usual quicktime suspects. Plus it takes eyeTV files (which are really just mpeg2 in disguise) and flash flv movies. [alert admin]

Since you want H.264 mp4 video, not DVD copies, Handbrake alone will do the job most of the time. Underline most. Plus it's free.

This info is inaccurate. According to apple tech support, if you connect a USB keyboard and a USB mouse to your macbook or macbook pro, then insomnia won't be necessary. But other USB devices won't do the trick.

Disk Utility will make an image clone of the NTFS boot camp partition. However, according to Apple tech support, restore using disk utility is not supported, ie probably won't work. And of course there's no way to nondestructively test if your backup clone will succeed.

Lots of software "phones home" to check for updates and perhaps for less benign purposes. If you don't like this, install and use Little Snitch.
