Firefox 2.0.0.14 (Mac OS X)

Maybe the best?

Safari certainly has some handsome tools, but Firefox has gradually evolved into a faster, more elegant browser. = Autoscrolling makes navigating complex lists of favorites much easier = While former versions of Firefox have fallen prey to memory leaks and sluggish performance, the current version has all the features you expect - and much faster. Improvement has been slow but successful. For the first time, I feel comfortable using both Firefox and Safari on the same level. [alert admin]

Google Image Search Widget 2.0 (Mac OS X)

It works!

On my 20" iMac, it's hard to imagine this widget being any easier. Since the images come divorced from their page content, they are provided without undue delay on a decent broadband connection. The widget is about average in size, but ranks as the most useful way to harvest images without opening your browser. [alert admin]

TinnitusTamerX 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Harmless and interesting

This completely harmless application attempts to remedy what can for some be a real problem: the loss of hearing sentitivity to certain ranges of sound. It works not unlike an EQ, shaping the sound so that hearing loss will be compensated. Since you'll be listening most of the time through your computer speakers, it's impossible for any harm to issue from use of this product. Convsersely, it's possible that certain users wtih some sort of hearing loss might find this a useful tool. In fact, hearing aids operate under the same basic principle, by boosting certain sounds to compensate for lost frequencies. Any music or computer user should put a limit to loud headphone use, but those who are heariing-compromised may find some comfort here. [alert admin]

Spamfire 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Empowerment over spam

Spamfire gives you a feeling of empowerment over spam, and its filtering features are attractive. An informed computer user should be able to dodge spam without resorting to filters. (Don't post on usenet; don't share your primary email with marketers; keep one or more "disposable" email accounts; if you publish your email on your website, post it as a graphic; dump all currently breached accounts.) Movie Locater 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Good, but has greater possibilities

Enter your search criteria, and Movie Locater immediately opens your browser to find the film from the Internet Movie Database. This saves a step or two, which is quite helpful. It would be even snappier (though more difficult) if the search results were imported back to your desktop without opening your browser -- the same way a dictionary or WIkipedia operates. ATI RADEON ROM Update Aug 2005 (Mac OS X)

B&W install is fine

The update worked very easily according to the clear instructions. [alert admin]

antiword 0.35 (Mac OS X)

Antiword

I, too, was unable to install. While antiword was available in Versiontracker, there aren't any instructions on how it can be installed on OS X -- if indeed it can. Until that time, this lacks functionality. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.2.06 (Mac OS X)

UMAX scanners

The popular UMAX 2000U is supported, but it only works in Classic. This means that it essentially does the same thing as the VistaScan software that came with the scanner. I'm sure this software is a life-line for many users who have been left in the cold by their scanner manufactuerers. For me, it would be more useful to have OSX drivers. [alert admin]

SafariBookmarkChecker 1.27 (Mac OS X)

Nice little app

If you have a plethora of bookmarks, SBC gives you keep a backup of your addresses and checks on their validity at your request. When an installation wiped out my data, this application allowed me to quickly restore all my carefully compiled Safari bookbarks. Given Safari's difficulty in exporting bookmarks from other browsers I have installed, SBC does a real service -- one of those apps that does a small thing really well. [alert admin]

SilverFast Ai STUDIO 6.4.1r4 (Mac OS X)

OS X -- when?

While Silverfast works, OS X can be used only under Classic -- a major inconvenience. UMAX has long since stopped supporting its popular 2000U, which I own, but their software is easily obtainable online. Why would I need Silverfast? Conversely, if Silverfast offered native OS X functionality, I'm certain many would purchase it instantly. [alert admin]

A custom EQ

As long as you're asking for suggestions for features... The first person able to find a way to tranport custom EQ settings from iTunes to the iPod will make himself rich. I don't like the iPod's custom settings, but I'd want to use my own.
