GrimRipperCM 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

No longer working?

No comments in two years, and no comments in a year and a half. I'm running Leopard, which came along later, and GR doesn't show up in my contextual menus at all. Anyone??? [alert admin]

Where is the upgrade pricing?

Has anyone heard from the developer regarding upgrade pricing? After trying v1.x, I gladly purchased it. Then recently, I was prompted to download v2 -- which is crippled and nags you for payment. I have no problem paying for software upgrades, but it's standard in the industry to offer special upgrade pricing for previously registered users. But the web site shows only the *full* pricing. I've written the developer twice to inquire, but in the nearly 3 weeks since my first inquiry, he hasn't "bothered" to reply even once. I've read the many angry posts by other users about this developer, but I've tried not to pass judgment, since my own experience had been satisfactory. But it's very, very easy, now, to see why people get so angry. I don't understand how someone with such a keen eye for design and funtionality could be so cold and apathetic toward people who have *paid* for his products. (I'm a registered user of *two*.) One can't help but wonder if there's any humanity left in this guy at all. Based upon the (lack of) customer service, I can no longer recommend this application. [alert admin]

DOT-TUNES 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Great idea, but doesn't work properlly -- & cust. svce. nonexistant.

I purchased DOT.iphone, almost 4 weeks ago and followed the instructions to the letter. But it wasn't working properly. Nothing unusual, here -- a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. After double-checking everything, I wrote the developer, and received the following reply (excerpt): >> I have not received such a report and I'd love to get to the bottom of it. Any chance you could send me your ip address and I'll test from here? << So I sent the information requested and waited for a reply, but never heard back. Eleven days later, I sent a friendly follow-up email, requesting an update. No reply. As of today, 3 weeks has passed, and I have yet to hear a peep from the developer. Again, I *paid* for this software -- not just the free version -- and for nearly 4 weeks, I've been unable to use it. Three weeks with no reply is unacceptable. [alert admin]

Spotlaser 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

There's competition...

I've been using Spotlaser for a few weeks, and I like it -- but I recently heard about MoRU, and it looks like MoRU's gonna win this round. (I'm not affiliated with either product.) [alert admin]

Spirited Away 0.5 (Mac OS X)

Almost there :-)

I'm glad someone's working on this idea. But although it's free, it's missing features found in an older app, AutoHide, which I still use. Unfortunately, AutoHide hasn't been updated in nearly 4 years, and although it still works, it's become quirky. (Every now and then, it's prefs window opens unexpectedly. Harmless, but weird....) Still, AutoHide has features that Spirited Away doesn't have: • The ability to hide applications *immediately*. Why is SA's minimum 30 seconds? Since it's a slider, why doesn't it start at zero?? I don't understand the logic, here. • A "Never hide when switching to these apps" list. (This is different from SA's "exclusion" list. AutoHide lets you make the extremely useful distinction between the behavior when switching *to* an app and when switching *away* from it, which I have found invaluable.) * Finally, as others have mentioned, having SA's prefs window open when launched is the epitome of irony, given the purpose of the app in the first place. Please fix this. :-) Although everyone loves freeware, I'd be happy to pay a shareware fee for Spirited Away, if more sophisticated features were added. Since it's at v0.5, I'll remain hopeful.... But for now, I'm sticking with AutoHide. (I recommend v1.3.6.... v1.3.8 introduced bugs which were never fixed.) [alert admin]

You Control: Tunes 1.5 b2 (Mac OS X)

Suddenly broken on my system

This is not a review -- I've loved this product for some time -- but suddenly it has stopped working on my machine. I'm not sure if it's the recent iTunes upgrade (7.1) that's broken YCT or other stuff I've recently installed (like QuickSilver and Growl). I don't use iTunes nor YCT every day, so I can't say exactly when YCT stopped working. But definitely within the last 3 weeks, which leads me to suspect the items mentioned above. If anyone else has any info, please share. Thanks. [alert admin]

Contactizer Pro 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Is this company still in business?

All attempts to view their web site take me to one of those generic, "that site no longer exists" pages with links to other sites. What's going on?! [alert admin]

Well, not so fast...

Although it might seem obvious, there's nothing on their web site (or nothing I could find) that suggests that registered GarageSale users are automatically entitled to use GarageSale Basic. This just may become the first software developer to charge users for a software "downgrade."

Can't download update from registered user's site

Are you using Speed Download? Speed Download is incompatible with the Saft download server (or something). You have to go into SD's prefs and enter "http://haoli.dnsalias.com/" so SD doesn't activate when using that site. After doing so, Saft will download properly, and you won't get the <<s.php>> item anymore.

Useless until you add spices.

"Don't worry so much about Leopard cause not too many people have it." Yeah. A paltry 2 million people bought it the first weekend it was on sale: <http://www.macobserver.com/article/2007/10/30.3.shtml> "...now I smell a rat with Leopard." Amazing. Because this guy can't run Leopard on his earlier-model Mac, he then concludes that Leopard is useless and that everyone else on the planet is, naturally, in his situation -- returning to Tiger, not buying Leopard, and "smelling a rat." According to his…

Want to like it

blizzaster, Nifty Box <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30484> has nested folders. Have you tried it? Seems to be in the same league as Yojimbo, but has no user reviews, yet. It's a newer app, though, with perhaps a smaller marketing budget.

Suddenly broken on my system

I wrote You Software support and heard back from them within minutes. (YMMV.) Trashing the two prefs files resolves the issue -- but it's critical that you select "Stop Engine" from the menu bar before trashing the prefs. Merely quitting the application (which I had previously tried) is not enough. The files to delete are: ~/Library/Preferences/com.yousoftware.youcontroltunes.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.yousoftware.youcontroltunesengine.plist OK, I love this app again. :-)

Review out of proportion

gslusher, As a "Power User," I appreciate your thoroughness, but I think you've been too harsh. There are levels of "protection," and I think it's clear what this app does and doesn't do. That said, your points would be well-taken if this were toted as an encription app; but it's not. It's a simple app for hiding folders from plain view -- which is, in fact, "protection" in it's simplest form. If you need more protection, that's…
