Z-Write 1.5b12 (Mac OS X)
Used to love it, reluctantly have to refuse it...
Unfortunately, I must agree w/the most recent negative comments. This was my favorite word processor, particularly for organizing interview notes for long, complex feature stories. But the program has not kept up with changes in the OS, and the many bugs have made it too cumbersome to use. I haven't used mine since a series of odd quirks that include SLOOOWWW typing. (The developer said this was fixed, but the problem never went away on my desktop.) It is absolutely unusable. A shame! [alert admin]

I have the clickwheel-type iPod, which up until yesterday, had songs on it from iTunes and audio files I had created (original stuff), as well as photo files (using the Belkin photo disk reader). Starting today, iTunes suddenly decided that it would not sync any of the songs from iTunes to my iPod because my current iPod software was "too old." So I went to Apple and found and downloaded this update. (It did not come up on my computer's System Updater.) Now, iTunes tells me (after the update), both that my software is still "too old," and that certain songs in my library can not be copied to the iPod because it is not authorized to play them. Basically, it wiped out everything I purchased from the iTunes store from my iPod. Wha-a-a?!!! I'm not using a new computer or doing anything different. I am so frustrated, I'm ready to sell the d--ned thing. I cannot say with 100-percent certainty that the problem is due to this updater, but boy, it certainly seems to have *something* to do with something that happened in the past week. And I didn't change anything on my end, so... WTF, Apple?! [alert admin]

Beware, if you already have an older version of Word on your computer: The Test Drive will not only supercede your current version -- it won't let you PRINT! Wow, that sure made things convenient during my test drive (especially considering that the ability to print was also a feature I would have appreciated being able to test.) I almost bought this darned package on impulse, since so many clients use it and just to keep from having to go through this rigamarole again and again (and I may yet need to purchase it) -- only to find that Microsoft isn't even set up to sell you the darned thing electronically. You have to then order it through the mail. Duh! Oh, and btw, Microsoft: Some of us yearn for the old (5.1) days, when Word was a simple, unbloated and USABLE program. Any chance of having the choice of a less "fully-featured" program? -S. [alert admin]

IBM ViaVoice X 3.0 (Mac OS X)
installed ViaVoice for the first time, and it worked wonderfully -- for about two hours. I was amazed by the accuracy I was able to attain after only 15 to 20 minutes of trading the program. This is where ViaVoice is strong. I've not yet tried the most recent iListen (1.5), but having used the earlier versions of that MacSpeech product extensively, I was very happy and hopeful with my first experience w/ViaVoice. From day one, the voice recognition (within SpeakPad) was amazingly accurate, even after just reading one 5-10-minute story (whereas, the earlier iListen product didn't get to that stage even after I'd read many selections to it over two weeks!) HOWEVER... After a few hours, everything began to fall apart. At first, a few features stopped working. The command " scratch that " stopped working. Then I could no longer start the program by voice. Then, it stopped recognizing any attempt to verbally make corrections. By the end of the week, I was unable to use ViaVoice at all. The technician on the help line seemed unsurprised by all this. He suggested that I may have corrupted my User File by using the " scratch that " command. Apparently, ViaVoice is not officially supported on OS 10.2, and they're still figuring out the bugs. No word on whether a patch is forthcoming, but it's apparently considered acceptable to tell OS 10.2 users there are just some features we're not going to be able to use [alert admin]
