Dropbox 0.6.556 (Mac OS X)

Caution for free users

I read the terms and it says that they can terminate at any time without notice. It also says that they can delete any files after 90 days of inactivity. The software might provide warnings about this, but the website terms say that they are under no obligation to provide such a warning. So that warm fuzzy secure feeling you get from having all your stuff backed up on a cloud should be tempered by the fact that the cloud needs regular activity, and can disappear without notice. Now how do you feel? [alert admin]

Audacity 1.3.8 (Mac OS X)

This beta version crashes during launch on Macbook

Tried launching this beta version several times, but it crashes fairly immediately after launching with a crash report window. I'm using OS 10.4.11. I just sent the crash log to the developers. If you want a stable version, visit the developer site and download the latest stable version. Let me say that I am a HUGE Audacity fan! I use it all the time. Many of the tools in Audacity are as good as or better than those in high-end products. I just sent the developers a donation for their excellent work. The fact that the most recent version has a little hiccup should not cause anyone to hesitate to make Audacity a part of their audio tool set. [alert admin]

File Stitcher 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Kinda broken: not worth the money

I purchased the software and have run it on a G5. After I run it, it produces a joined file, but locks up. I have to force quit after each use. Also, the file that is created is flawed in that the displayed length of the file is off. I have to load it into another piece of software to repair it. The developer did respond very quickly. Nor was a refund offered. No fix has been produced yet (in about a month). [alert admin]

LAConvolver 0.3 (Mac OS X)

v .3 works well, improved interface features

Though it still doesn't have a "pretty" graphical interface, it is elegantly simple and has worked really well for me on intel macbook, and PPC G5 dual 2ghz machines. I have a nice collection of impulse responses that I have gathered from free sources. I use this plug-in regularly and it is my go-to reverb. Now with LAconvolver, I have a freeware (donation-ware) reverb unit that is better than ANY other reverb I have access to in software or hardware. [alert admin]

Metronome 1.8.1 (Mac OS X)

Nice basic tool

The software is simple enough to use, and the features are that of a basic metronome. Additionally, it will allow you to accelerate your tempo in a controlled way (though oddly, not decelerate). It allows a higher resolution of tempo to the nearest 10th of a BPM which is useful if you are trying to find the exact tempo of something. One minor weakness is that it doesn't start right when you click START. It takes a moment. So if you are trying to match a tempo, you can't start the metronome right on a beat. Also, any changes you make to the tempo causes an interruption in the time, again, which makes real-time tempo matching impossible. Perhaps that is something that could be implemented in a future version. [alert admin]

Chipmunk 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)

Very useful utility, excellent support

As the description says, it finds duplicates and gives you a logical way to remove them. For those of us with large libraries of samples and loops, it's a great way to keep your space needs down. With sample libraries, it's a little tricky because an "instrument" will look in a specific place for the samples it needs. If more than one instrument need to access the same sample, it just takes more planning and organization to keep that alll straight. It might not be worth the space regained. At some point, I had suggested that when removing duplicates, an alias to the remaining original could be an option. The developer explained why this might be a dodgy thing to implement. I like the basic way it works, once I got the hang of it. I have been going through various volumes and tidying up. I haven't had any problems with Chipmunk. [alert admin]

DietController 1.13 (Mac OS X)

Nice features, a bit pricey.

Of course, it's subjective, but I wouldn't have hesitated to pay 29.95 for this software. $49.95 just seems a bit steep for this particular package. I guess there are enough folks who would kick down for this kind of thing. I just think there would be plenty more if it wasn't priced so high. I'll pass for now. But maybe I'll come crawling back. Amazing Maze 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Nice for Creating Sound-Design or Composition Elements

As I opened it, it quickly began playing through a variety of samples that were kind of bounced or bent or panned around. As it plays, there is a sense that it is pretty well-balanced in terms of density, etc. The documentation is a little hard to follow, but the software is simple to use, while creating very sophisticated sounding results. The interface is not especially pretty, but it is functional and clear. I like the sounds and implementation and look forward to working with it more. [alert admin]

Chipmunk 1.0rc1 (Mac OS X)

Really handy utility- esp for video, graphics, audio & music pros

As an audio/music pro with a macbook, it is crucial that I not waste precious disc space on redundant, duplicate files. Sometimes files will have different names, but have the exact some contents. Sometimes I won't know which files are newest, or which version to keep. I found Chipmunk after searching VT for "remove duplicates". I gave it a try, liked it very much, and bought it. Chipmunk allows me to choose locations or sets of folders to scan for duplicates. It creates a list of duplicates, and allows me to get rid of them one-by-one, or as a batch. There is an organized way the Chipmunk allows you to get rid of duplicates outside of, or inside of the current folder. Because I have tons of samples in my instrument libraries, and audio files in my iTunes and elsewhere, Chipmunk had a pretty clever way of managing the data. I got a ton of space back on my macbook. I imagine this utility will be a great help for anyone with large numbers of iTunes tracks and photos. [alert admin]

Secret handshakes

Well said. I have on many occasions been unable to find instructions for a function in the documentation. The tech support turnaround is about 48 hours (not bad). And there is a good user forum. Very often, the procedure is some kind of hoop-jump that noone could ever have figured out on their own. Sibelius is a little easier than Finale. But not much.

Still useless with EyeTV

Yea. I noticed the delay that must be caused by some buffering of audio as it is being transmitted. Perhaps the buffer size could be reduced? Or perhaps Airfoil could be set to do some kind of audio "lookahead" to reduce or eliminate gap between video and audio. It's a good company, I'll bet they are wracking their brains.

The Real Champ...

As a fellow teacher, I just wanted to recommend that you also look at Dr. Betotte which is a very capable metronome, step-sequencer, chord-progression generator, etc. Dr. B has been another very capable and helpful teaching tool for me. FYI.

Middle C

No one is arguing about what "middle C" refers to. What is being discussed is whether there is a lack of consistancy as the the octave number applied to middle C. For piano it is C4, for most synths it's C4, but for some synths its C3. That is an unfortunate glitch in the nomenclature that is well-known. There's no point in arguing about whether the glitch exists. It does. We can all agree that…

Yes, really.

The intellimouse software allows you to program specific functions to all button & wheel functions -- AND you can make customized sets of those functions for each program that you are in. That is more than a simple input device will do. And it is critical for those of us who are doing very tedious mouse-intensive work. As much as I would love to find a different mouse, so far this one is it.

Latest version works well on Intel macs

I'm using it on an intel mac, and the newest version seems to work perfectly. There are a few very minor bugs in some of the editors but nothing annoying or problematic.

It says freeware, but there's a "registration system"?

I don't think version-tracker has a category for "donation-ware". But I think that a flag after every restart might be considered by some to be "Nag-ware". In my book, Freeware means you download it and use it without any "reminders". If in the documentation or installer text of freeware there is a little note about making a donation-- that's fine.
