Amazing Maze 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Nice for Creating Sound-Design or Composition Elements ![]()

As I opened it, it quickly began playing through a variety of samples that were kind of bounced or bent or panned around. As it plays, there is a sense that it is pretty well-balanced in terms of density, etc. The documentation is a little hard to follow, but the software is simple to use, while creating very sophisticated sounding results. The interface is not especially pretty, but it is functional and clear. I like the sounds and implementation and look forward to working with it more. [alert admin]

Chipmunk 1.0rc1 (Mac OS X)

As an audio/music pro with a macbook, it is crucial that I not waste precious disc space on redundant, duplicate files. Sometimes files will have different names, but have the exact some contents. Sometimes I won't know which files are newest, or which version to keep. I found Chipmunk after searching VT for "remove duplicates". I gave it a try, liked it very much, and bought it. Chipmunk allows me to choose locations or sets of folders to scan for duplicates. It creates a list of duplicates, and allows me to get rid of them one-by-one, or as a batch. There is an organized way the Chipmunk allows you to get rid of duplicates outside of, or inside of the current folder. Because I have tons of samples in my instrument libraries, and audio files in my iTunes and elsewhere, Chipmunk had a pretty clever way of managing the data. I got a ton of space back on my macbook. I imagine this utility will be a great help for anyone with large numbers of iTunes tracks and photos. [alert admin]

Apple MainStage 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Too bad it's not available a la carte.
This seems like the kind of product that could be really useful for LOTS of musicians (even those not interested in recording). Since it is designed to make AU effects & virtual instruments available for real-time performance it would be valuable even to those of us who CAN'T STAND logic. Although, I have to confess that the latest release of Logic Studio is an almost irresistible bargain. [alert admin]

File Compare 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I'm getting some files that are not identical and I'm wondering if this is because names or creation dates are different. In other words, does File Compare look at the file name and date when it concludes that the files themselves are not identical? As for the way the software functions, it's simple, clear and works fine as far as I can tell. I've always liked the MD5 idea for checking lots of different kinds of things. Especially for confirming that audio file transfers have gone down without error. This is especially helpful when taking an audio CD master to the duplication facility. It's a good way to check that the audio got in the way it should. [alert admin]

Apple Pages 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Lacks power and features compared to AppleWorks ![]()

As a teacher, I continue to use AppleWorks to create worksheets and reference pages. I use lots of graphs and symbols in my work. Simple things like being able to draw and configure lines, and move them (with cursor keys), have them snap to a grid, etc. etc. are apparently gone. If these features are there I have not been able to find them either in the menus, inspector windows or in the help. I like the way AW allows seemless integration of drawing, painting, and word processing. There are things in Pages that are annoyingly like WORD. In AW you can set the font to "underline" mode and start hitting the spacebar to get a line. In Pages and in Word, you can't see a line until you type a period or type a non-underline character or something. Aaarg. Also, if you are careful about the spaces and letters you want to copy & paste, Pages, like Word, will assume it knows better than you and add a space or take away spaces. I do think that Pages is more organized and logical than AppleWorks and Word. But it lacks features and has not built upon the strengths of AW as I had wished. Too bad AW is no longer getting developed. [alert admin]

I have used it in GB and DP5. Works great. It gives you very flexible synthesis options. Nice envelopes, great editing features. You can use the SoundFonts that come with it, including a larger download that expands the raw wave data you can sythesize with. There are also some steps you can take to create your own soundfonts to use in Crystal. With the variety of sythesis techniques it makes available, and the ability to use custom soundfonts, it's very powerful indeed. It is helpful and fun for teaching basic synthesis. What a lucky thing to discover Crystal. Enjoy!! [alert admin]

LAConvolver 0.2 (Mac OS X)
v.2 works well in DP, GB and other AU hosts ![]()

I have tested LAConvolver in DP v5.12, and GB and it works perfectly as of version 0.2. The simple interface allows you to select separate impulse response files for multiple channels. I tested it with reverb IR's and it works beautifully. With the many excellent free impulse response files that are available, I was able to create a reverb that is comparable in quality to Altiverb ($595.00). LAConvolver offers wet & dry gain controls. If you want to control other things, you can use other plug-ins either before or after in the signal chain. For example, insert a delay to control pre-delay, insert pre or post EQ or filters to control tone. This is the first free convolution software that I have found that works for intel and PPC based machines. I have tested it on my macbook and on my G5 dual 2Ghz. Works like a charm. Simple to use!!! Lernvall Audio has a real winner with LAConvolver. I was happy to send a small donation to support their efforts!!!! [alert admin]

LAConvolver 0.1 (Mac OS X)
What a welcome alternative to the EX$PENSIVE alternatives!!
Even though this plug-in is in it's early stages, it shows great promise. I want to encourage users to support this developer. If this plugin is developed further, it will be an excellent alternative to very high priced convolution software that is out there. This plug-in allows you to have completely independent stereo convolution with separate files selectable for each side. I tried LAConvolver in GarageBand and it worked fine. In this version 0.1, there was a gain boost that caused some clipping to occur. The developer said that gain controls would be included in a future version. [alert admin]

Well said. I have on many occasions been unable to find instructions for a function in the documentation. The tech support turnaround is about 48 hours (not bad). And there is a good user forum. Very often, the procedure is some kind of hoop-jump that noone could ever have figured out on their own. Sibelius is a little easier than Finale. But not much.

Yea. I noticed the delay that must be caused by some buffering of audio as it is being transmitted. Perhaps the buffer size could be reduced? Or perhaps Airfoil could be set to do some kind of audio "lookahead" to reduce or eliminate gap between video and audio. It's a good company, I'll bet they are wracking their brains.

As a fellow teacher, I just wanted to recommend that you also look at Dr. Betotte which is a very capable metronome, step-sequencer, chord-progression generator, etc. Dr. B has been another very capable and helpful teaching tool for me. FYI.

No one is arguing about what "middle C" refers to. What is being discussed is whether there is a lack of consistancy as the the octave number applied to middle C. For piano it is C4, for most synths it's C4, but for some synths its C3. That is an unfortunate glitch in the nomenclature that is well-known. There's no point in arguing about whether the glitch exists. It does. We can all agree that…

The intellimouse software allows you to program specific functions to all button & wheel functions -- AND you can make customized sets of those functions for each program that you are in. That is more than a simple input device will do. And it is critical for those of us who are doing very tedious mouse-intensive work. As much as I would love to find a different mouse, so far this one is it.

It says freeware, but there's a "registration system"?
I don't think version-tracker has a category for "donation-ware". But I think that a flag after every restart might be considered by some to be "Nag-ware". In my book, Freeware means you download it and use it without any "reminders". If in the documentation or installer text of freeware there is a little note about making a donation-- that's fine.
