Call Recorder for Skype 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
After trying to find a way to record Skype calls, and finding most solutions far too complicated, Call Recorder seemed the way to go. And it was. The temporary bug in the last version has been quickly resolved, and it works incredibly well. You don't have to do a thing (well, perhaps convert the QuickTime movie file into mp3 with the converter that goes with the software). Highly recommended. [alert admin]

Tofu 2.0a2 (Mac OS X)
Wonderful idea, what about footnotes
Tofu's horizontal scrolling is a great idea, but I'm not using the software much because it does not display RTF-footnotes (like TextEdit doesn't). Any chance this will be remedied in the near future? [alert admin]

SOHO Calendars 5.0.5 (Mac OS X)
This product is incredibly weak, and I would loose neither time nor money on it. The calendar app is a list view for iCal, and little more; the contacts is just AB dressed up; the notes have been implemented better in other apps, and the original strength of a fully integrated personal organizer (which I have used 4-5 years) is not to be expected in a year's time, if ever; given Chronos' record of (lack of) support, I would steer clear of this product. Sad but true. [alert admin]

ChronoSync 3.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Normally I use my iMac as the main computer, but when it went forth and back because of various problems, I needed to sync more seriously between my iMac and iBook. I could not figure out how to use RetriSpect for that purpose, and started using ChronoSync. It works great. I now have several containers, called iMac2iBook or iBook2iMac, which sync my databses, documents, and sometimes additional files. On paper, I did not realy want to use the FireWire target mode. In practice, I have discovered that it works like a dream. The only thing I need to remind myself of is to eject the target HD before I disconnect the two computers. I would have liked a warning from ChronoSync upon quitting. A second item on my wish-list would be an overview of only those files which are to by synced, without those which will not be synced, in the analysis window: now I have to expand all folders manually and wade through a large number of files to see which files will be affected by synchronization. But these wishes are not essential: it works well. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

iBank 2.0b17 (Mac OS X)
It's time to release a definitive version; I'm not interested in a life-long beta. That is not what I paid for. The 1,5 version was not good, so I needed to upgrade, and I trusted you; but the last upgrade distorted my data. We are not paying you for bad software, or are we? I am seriously considering to switch. [alert admin]

iFlash 2.6.4 (Mac OS X)
iFlash is a reliable product, which is actively supported, and it has a good set of features. It is very easy to set up a deck of cards, and the software works like advertised. I have not made use of the audio possibilities myself, but it is good to know that iFlash supports that. What I would like to request, to stimulate my appetite in learning vocab, is some graphs of recent study session scores. For Hebrew, FoundationStone (freeware!) has a brilliant set of graphs, which iFlash (which supports more languages, but has less features) does not. Overall, highly recommended. [alert admin]

Chronos Personal Organizer 4.5.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
It always was a product for the Home Office / Small Office ![]()

Personal Organizer always was a product for the Home Office / Small Office market, hence included features which many users may not need. On the other hand, it was a very usefultool that kept everything together. After years of use, it still contains all my addresses neatly, notes from 5 years ago, and so on. The question is not whether it is for the SOHO market—if you did not realize that, you probably did not use the product previously—but whether it will live up to its expectations, and how much it will cost! But it is a long wait. [alert admin]

TechTool Deluxe 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I had a problem with my iMac G5 (hung on a black screen before fully starting up). Ran Apple Hardware Test, which reported no problem. Than I ran TechTool Deluxe. It ran for 7 hours, when I accidentally found a report on the web which makes it abundantly clear that TT screws up your machine when you use it with Tiger. Still trying to sort things out. Ulysses 1.2 (Mac OS X)
This update includes more features than the digit change from 1.1.1 to 1.2 would suggest. Apart from the support for Spotlight, which I highly rate, and the improved text engine, it is the possibility to hide or show the browser and preview section, or notes/control section, which are immensely valuable. Even on an iMac 17" screen that can be helpful, let alone on my 12' iBook. The update is free for registered users. One thing I would like (there is always something someone wants) is the possibility to hide or show the control separately from the notes section. To focus entirely on writing, this is my tool of choice in combination with LaTeX (in the humanities). In that combo, it has a nifty feature for footnotes as well. Footnote support for rtf etc. would be welcome. [alert admin]

I did not intend to throw some sand into your wide-open eyes... Why Ulysses? As you already indicate, the fullscreen mode of Ulysses, which started the trend, is implemented rather nicely with a scrollbar fading away into the dark background; There is the "typewriter" mode which, afaik, no other app has: you will never write at the last line of the screen, since the fullscreen editor moves upward. This is incredibly helpful (even though it…

DevonThink's full screen does not work half as elegantly as Ulysses's, and the price is not so outlandish once you realise that 1. You start writing a lot more focussed 2. The target audience will always remain relatively small, and 3. a rolls royce requires a bit more handiwork than your average run-of-the-mill software. God is in the details! Ever tried DEVONthink for writing? Really? It's a great app, I'm a registered fan, but I use if…

Ulysses tries to develop a tool which does not distract authors. Formatting is one thing authors have not been trained to do (and rarely do well), and which can be hugely distracting, whether you are aware of it or not, if only because it becomes an addiction. Something to fizzle with when you should be doing something else. Italics, for example, is usually used in overdosis. If you really need italics, or boldface, it can still be done…

Which was your former to-do app that did a better job? Unless it was not menubar-based, I only know one alternative, which is not reliable at all and has less features even apart from iCal (which I do not use).

I fully agree - having used Personal Organizer since October 2001 (I just checked it in the diary, everything is still there; actually, archiving some years would not be a bad option) I have long waited for the update. I assume that it will be possible to transfer all information from PO 4.5 to SOHO, although the announcement does not state this explicitly. It is the least one might expect. I must say that a…

Did you use their support email address? Because I can imagine that small developers not alwats read sites like these, but they should address questions sent to them directly.
