ChronoSync 3.3.3 (Mac OS X)
I first registered Chronosync in '02 and have upgraded and used it for backing up quite happily since. I looked forward to realising the promise in its name eventually and recently bought a 2nd mac, and that's where I discovered Chronosync is a misnomer for the average but reasonably competent user (like me) - it should be named ChronoBackup. Like the previous reviewer the first sync worked well enough and then what I knew to be identical files got error messages every time. Other files got unexplained error messages too and sometimes even updated files wouldn't be correctly transferred. I wrote to Customer service and got a file back with instructions how to give Chronosync admin priveleges to get over what I thought (as another reviewer found) were permissions limitations. That didn't work either and I had to trash and reinstall CS to get rid of the hack, and I was passed onto another assistant who curtly informed that my home folders should sync with no problem. I've heard nothing from them since. Take this with a pinch of salt or whatever, but I haven't been this disappointed in a piece of paid-for software since MS Office. No doubt others have resolved these issues in some way - I'd like to know how cos I sure won't find out from customer service. Right now this for fairly simple backup (and the excellent Superduper for cloning plus Transmit for the serious lan stuff) is ok, but still not what I paid for in name. I hope they can move on with this. I know I will be. [alert admin]

iTunes Catalog 2.0 (Mac OS X)
.. but the import eventually gets there ![]()

.. and 'Publish Catalog' is very slick - check it out. Overall this is a serious update and worth the upgrade price, imo. [alert admin]

iTunes Catalog 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Overall v.2 is better organized
but the v.1 artwork import isn't working well - the menu import command ramdomly vanishes and there's no feedback or progress bar to show if anything's really happening or not. [alert admin]

Celestia 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
Tremendous visuals. Worked great on a 2 year old p'book, and the demo (press D key) is very nice indeed. [alert admin]

Camino 1.0rc1 (Mac OS X)
"The power behind Camino is the Gecko rendering engine, built and tested by thousands of volunteers, incorporating the absolute cutting edge in web innovations." - except it won't copy and paste text and retain formatting and embedded links, which the competition does. Apart from that, excellent browser. [alert admin]

DVDpedia 2.3.0 (Mac OS X)
> I already use Delicious Library which has the same features and combines all the features of the *pedia apps into one. I took a look at the developers website to try to find a bundle version price but didn't see one. Anyone know? < I'd come to the same conclusion - I can understand developers work hard and I do respect that but couldn't help feeling this one is capitalising too much on what are relatively small differences. I've paid for DVDpedia but don't wish to be strung along for every other format on the market. Any answer from the developer? Meanwhile I'm on the edge of switching to Delicious for convenience (one app) as well as price. [alert admin]

iBank 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
It's taken a while for this upgrade to develop and a few days for an untalented economist like myself to adjust to it but the effort's been worth it. More options in a clearer and more unified user interface have made me actually *enjoy* updating my finances (blush). There's more feedback from the program now too, once you get used to how it's accessed, like the forecasting and the more flexible charting. As said, I'm no expert, but those with a similar handicap might find the reasonable effort to organise their stuff worthwhile. And it's being worked on seriously by the developer. Overall very pleased with this program. [alert admin]

Front Row Enabler 1.1 (Mac OS X)
No, Apple's software license doesn't allow for use of this. Anyhow, worked great for this 15" powerbook. Just follow the instructions and all's well. Many thanks to the hacker. ;) [alert admin]

CoverFlow 1.85 (Mac OS X)
but I wouldn't recommend an underpowered machine to run this. It took 20 minutes or more to load my 1500 album covers and then more to work through them again compressing and so on and used up to 480 Mb ram in the process, finally settling at 250 mb - but then zooming the window to full screen really did show the covers, and what Tiger graphics can do, in full glory. Pretty good show. [alert admin]

iBank 2.0b (Mac OS X)
.. as the demo period sped past in about half an hour and then stopped for some reason. So it's hard to evaluate much. Mail type interface integrated to one window; imported 'memorized' from the v.1 database which unfortunately mixed them in with unwanted defaults from v.2 and repeated some of them in the list many times over - a mess. Couldn't check much new stuff, eg. currency conversion (a welcome addition), because, as said, the demo period ran out fast. But as a beta it looks very promising. Quite an update. [alert admin]

SuperDuper, not quite Super yet!!!
Exactly - simply partition. The deal being a clone has to be exactly that, no less and no more than the source, and a partitioned volume will qualify. If your drive size is fairly small and you just want something bootable then opt for the 'safety clone'.

"Make sure that you are connected to the internet since this will force a reload of all of your data. Please also note that you may loose some of the settings that you had." Tried that (after advice from the developer) but thanks for the extra feedback. Unfortunately I did lose - all the customized zoom level settings for the cities in every view I'd saved as a favourite, which are now all back to zero.…

ditto for the multi currency - been waiting some while and would love to see it implemented, especially in transferring from one account to another (I'm banking in 3 currencies). But for now I'd be happy just to see which currency was which in the lefthand accounts column.

my dock style is unchanged since OS 8
Yeah, I recently revamped my dragthing docks because I liked the newer skins with translucency. Also reset hotkeys to show and hide them, simple combos like ctl 1, ctl a, and so on. And in the prefs a 'minimize all docks' hotspot at screen left. The translucency can look messy at first but it's nice to see through to other windows, imo. I've used fairly large icons cos they're easier to see and click, and…
